Excellent rant Richard, hitting the nail on the head. The money that is wasted by government is criminal, decisions being made by people who haven’t a clue, and refuse to listen to people especially those impacted who know what should or should not be done.
And there’s nothing like a good old rant to get it off your chest. Hopefully your grass will recover, I’m sure it will.

Down ere in Plymouth we have only had 18 days without rain in 4 months! Not an excessively wet year, just some rain in all the other days broken up by the storms.

In Somerset If there is a ditch on the side of the road the farmer is responsible for it. It’s due to an old rule that the original farmers dug the ditch in there own land, piled the soil on there land and then the hedge grew in said pile of dirt. This rule is also applied for boundary disputes. Basically if you have a ditch on your land with a hedge next to it, the side that has the hedge on owns the ditch.
Be worth checking the rules in your area so you know where you stand.
Hence the farmers own the road side ditches by the hedge/ditch rule.
Further to this though, if a road side ditch has been piped and then drains from the road flow into it, it then becomes the council’s responsibility to clean/jet if they are blocked.

What a nightmare! I watch a channel in Southampton for ship watching, and they haven't had much sunny days either, it's all rain and clouds non stop, no time to dry out. Brace for a weird, wet spring! Hope you guys can get some reprieve. The ditches are crazy, what in the world are the councils doing! They should be maintaining those. Don't apologize for the rant- you aren't the only one noticing the differences! It's not quite ditches, but lots of that is going on here in the US as well

You could grow a helluva crop of grass carp down there….. don’t worry about the dying grass on the surface. It’s what’s happening to the roots that matters and how deep the water table is below the ground. That land might need aerating or subsoiling to help get the water down trough the soil

Love the rant 😂 but you talk absolute sense regarding the council, we have the same problem up here in the south of of Scotland. Instead of fixing roads, which are horrendous they are imposing a 20 mile an hour speed limit in villages , they say it's to stop pedestrians getting hit by speeding cars which in our little town has never happened in the 20 years I've lived in it they just like wasting money 🙄

Once the land dries out could you mow the grass then allow a couple of days to wilt and let livestock eat what they want of it. Fresh grass will cover the field within a week of grazing.

It's the risk you take Richard by not trimming your hadges earlier in the Autumn.......i know you like to leave the hedges for the wildlife etc. but as i always say everything has a price tag attached to it ..........trim your hedges early the berries get knocked off but the job gets done ......leave the hedgetrimming to the last minute and there's a good chance it doesn't get done.....the thing is aswell once you get 3/4 years growth on the hedge your hedgetrimmer will struggle to get it off ........you will have to go over it 2/3 times to make a tidy job of it. we've only done half our field hedges......the meadows and steep ground has been wet from the word go all back in september but were not too worried they were all trimmed last year

Spot on with the Rant Richard. It doesn't help that Kids still at school, who have never done a days work in their life are now eligible to vote. Same goes for MP's in Parliament, people who would pass out at the sight of a shovel or, have a heart attack at the mere suggestion of using one. On our high street there is a short section where they made a dedicated 'loading only' lay-by, clearly marked, and fully used by traders. Some moron in the highways department (spending up the last of the years money) decided to get all the yellow lines re-done and, to add the yellow bars on the kerbs showing No Stopping or Loading. So we've now got a freshly re-marked Loading Bay where there is No Stopping or Loading allowed.
If Brains were Dominoes, some of these degree level educated clowns would be Knocking.

Definitely not a rant .. just speaking the truth.. I can always remember the council road crews we would always get tar chips dropped off to use when they were close by the farms and you knew that the neighbours would get the same.. now the council pays to dump them in landfill 😮.. you also new all of the crew by name and was the same ones who did the snow clearance.. the council was a lot better then in lots of ways. Richard think your going to need farmer Ps slittorake for your grass when the water dissipates you'll get a hell 'o crop of grass then. 😊. Stay safe 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Ps Rant on..... 😉

How about a go fund me page and if you get enough money hire a contractor to clear the ditches. If the council complains say its you ditch on your land. it's almost impossible to prove a boundary in the sticks.

@@johnhughes2113it might be voluntary but if they don't plant trees on perfectly good farm land they get no subsidies, which in turn will cause food prices to rise because of the lack of usable land and small farms closing down to be bought up by big farms just to be used to sell for carbon credits to large corporations and oil companies so they can say they are going green
