Excellent rant Richard, hitting the nail on the head. The money that is wasted by government is criminal, decisions being made by people who haven’t a clue, and refuse to listen to people especially those impacted who know what should or should not be done. And there’s nothing like a good old rant to get it off your chest. Hopefully your grass will recover, I’m sure it will.
Down ere in Plymouth we have only had 18 days without rain in 4 months! Not an excessively wet year, just some rain in all the other days broken up by the storms.
I've been watching this all through the winter with you and Ireland. It's so wet . Here in the states we are sooo dry . Very . No rain or snow in the valleys . Been the warmest winter I've ever known . We'll keep keeping on one day at a time . Thankyou for pointing this out .take care . Ps I started watching the UK years ago and back then they were saying the gov had stopped dredging then the rivers . Well take care .
Wasn't it just a few months ago we was glad to see the back of 2023. Hopefully 2024 change's soon. We have grass like this but once dry we plan to have a go with the chainharrows to remove the dead grass.. Hopefully you can get on soon. Regards to the family
Richardi worked for suffolk highways for 20 years, and i spent some time each winter digging out ditches the only problem is money don't last for ever..
In Somerset If there is a ditch on the side of the road the farmer is responsible for it. It’s due to an old rule that the original farmers dug the ditch in there own land, piled the soil on there land and then the hedge grew in said pile of dirt. This rule is also applied for boundary disputes. Basically if you have a ditch on your land with a hedge next to it, the side that has the hedge on owns the ditch. Be worth checking the rules in your area so you know where you stand. Hence the farmers own the road side ditches by the hedge/ditch rule. Further to this though, if a road side ditch has been piped and then drains from the road flow into it, it then becomes the council’s responsibility to clean/jet if they are blocked.
It is same here in yorkshire, on farm I worked on , the farm was responsible to maintain the ditch on roadside due to the old law, council never did them
Rant on, Rich. Rant on! You've got to start somewhere if things are ever to change for the better. Starting with a proper rant every now and then might help to get things started. Good show!
What a nightmare! I watch a channel in Southampton for ship watching, and they haven't had much sunny days either, it's all rain and clouds non stop, no time to dry out. Brace for a weird, wet spring! Hope you guys can get some reprieve. The ditches are crazy, what in the world are the councils doing! They should be maintaining those. Don't apologize for the rant- you aren't the only one noticing the differences! It's not quite ditches, but lots of that is going on here in the US as well

You'll probably be looking back fondly on this during the drought in July.
I have heard Tom Pemberton's Dad rant about the council not cleaning the ditches many, many times. It seems so simple to fix it and yet, they don't do it.
Good morning Richard. I'm surprised that you being funky that you haven't called the council etc .get on them and get them on the case It's worth a go.have a nice weekend. Cheers mate.
Good morning Richard ,good video!!!!! here in my surroundings all the Ditches wil be Clean out every Year! m.v.g.Simon Lich Oostwold Oldambt Netherlands
You could grow a helluva crop of grass carp down there….. don’t worry about the dying grass on the surface. It’s what’s happening to the roots that matters and how deep the water table is below the ground. That land might need aerating or subsoiling to help get the water down trough the soil
Love the rant 😂 but you talk absolute sense regarding the council, we have the same problem up here in the south of of Scotland. Instead of fixing roads, which are horrendous they are imposing a 20 mile an hour speed limit in villages , they say it's to stop pedestrians getting hit by speeding cars which in our little town has never happened in the 20 years I've lived in it they just like wasting money 🙄
The drainage up keep is scandalous Richard and council wondering why the water quality is 💩 when people dump there rubbish into the drains but council very quick to point finger and farmers brilliant video Richard thank you👌👍
Once the land dries out could you mow the grass then allow a couple of days to wilt and let livestock eat what they want of it. Fresh grass will cover the field within a week of grazing.
Tom Pemberton and his Dad have published a couple videos talking about the very same thing. The creeks ditches snd streams that are supposed to drain the farmland aren't being maintained and they get testy if you do it yourself. Its crazy.
We have the same problems in Worcestershire. The river Severn floods all over the fields. The rivers are not dredged anymore 😢 One was to demonstrate is boycott the local elections. 🎉
hey Richard I'm in Scotland an have been trying to get out on my bikes fore weeks but cant as its completely flooded an impassable and muddy my huskies arent liking it as thy cant get out working as places tht never normaly flood are flooded.
It's the risk you take Richard by not trimming your hadges earlier in the Autumn.......i know you like to leave the hedges for the wildlife etc. but as i always say everything has a price tag attached to it ..........trim your hedges early the berries get knocked off but the job gets done ......leave the hedgetrimming to the last minute and there's a good chance it doesn't get done.....the thing is aswell once you get 3/4 years growth on the hedge your hedgetrimmer will struggle to get it off ........you will have to go over it 2/3 times to make a tidy job of it. we've only done half our field hedges......the meadows and steep ground has been wet from the word go all back in september but were not too worried they were all trimmed last year
Coming later this year, sfi option Manage species-rich floodplain meadows 5 years£1,070 per ha per year, might be alot more profitable than cows on flooded fields!
We are the same in south west scotland, all the jobs are mounting up as we can't do anything the ground is saturated, our town did the same and now most of the shops are closed,it killed the town
Maybe Buzz Lightyear will work as magical effegy. If you dance naked in the flooded fields chanting magic incantations, then tie Buzz to a tree. And he will work as a enchanted talisman to protect your land from rain. What? 😁 Might work, plus you'll get so many views you'll go viral 😁
Spot on with the Rant Richard. It doesn't help that Kids still at school, who have never done a days work in their life are now eligible to vote. Same goes for MP's in Parliament, people who would pass out at the sight of a shovel or, have a heart attack at the mere suggestion of using one. On our high street there is a short section where they made a dedicated 'loading only' lay-by, clearly marked, and fully used by traders. Some moron in the highways department (spending up the last of the years money) decided to get all the yellow lines re-done and, to add the yellow bars on the kerbs showing No Stopping or Loading. So we've now got a freshly re-marked Loading Bay where there is No Stopping or Loading allowed. If Brains were Dominoes, some of these degree level educated clowns would be Knocking.
No ditches get cleaned out around us either, moan to council , answer is,,,,,, we have no money,,, the bit I don’t understand is there are hundreds of new houses being built so councils are getting more council tax money,so where is that going Rich ? Hope you giving Farmer P moral support 👍👍🍻
Definitely not a rant .. just speaking the truth.. I can always remember the council road crews we would always get tar chips dropped off to use when they were close by the farms and you knew that the neighbours would get the same.. now the council pays to dump them in landfill 😮.. you also new all of the crew by name and was the same ones who did the snow clearance.. the council was a lot better then in lots of ways. Richard think your going to need farmer Ps slittorake for your grass when the water dissipates you'll get a hell 'o crop of grass then. 😊. Stay safe 🏴 Ps Rant on..... 😉
Like the majority of us know the Caravan Club go Hare coursing we also know you cannot keep building without maintaining rivers and ditches. Trouble is no one in authority cares.
Forget the council they are a load of young people who don't understand where milk comes from. The problem is our services are run by people who played electronic games as children and have no idea about life. How about a go fund me page and if you get enough money hire a contractor to clear the ditches. If the council complains say its you ditch on your land. it's almost impossible to prove a boundary in the sticks. You have a good following on this channel, I'm sure you'll get enough money. After all it the food for us that your struggling to produce for the people.
I know we shouldn't complain about important rain for the support of life, but there is a limit, it's taking the pee, the way things are going one day you may changing from Dairy to Fish Farm Richard.🤔
To my mind the process of Central and Local Government funding needs a complete overhaul. Too many mamby pambies out there forcing through schemes that are of no real benefit that then strangle the system of funding from where it is really needed.

You voted for Boris and Brexit so it is your fault.
It’s been a slow decline for many years. Long before Boris I’m afraid. It also would not have been anything to do with any vote I cast. Never voted in a General Election for all my 49 years of being eligible. In my view they are all as bad as each other but we don’t need to turn this into a Political debate.
why would the goverment care about flooded fields.. while attempting to sign free trade deals with australia. it dosnt have to pay for drains upkeep there .neither pay subsides.win win chicken dinner for goverment
But yet they all blame global warming for all the flooding as you highlight Richard if ditches and drains were cleaned it would make a hell of a difference
Richard you've got no hope of getting those ditches done Most councils are virtually bankrupt and don't forget over 80% of council taxes goes on welfare ie migrants 🙄
How did Bud Lightyear get in there from "MUCK OFF THE CLAMP". 😂 Ditch roadside maintenance is down to your County Council as agents for the Highways Agency but often it's arguable that it's the responsibility of adjacent Landowners, in other words passing the buck.🧐
New York State Department transportation they are more worried about the rich people like alone route 41 ,41A because I spent five years or more on those roads I did ditch 41 one End the other end all summer then that big bad flood and I did it again same spot dig the same spot wherever I gone same spot every year and I didn’t run it slow. I ran the fastest I can go with the machine hundred feet hundred feet an hour at least thousand feet a day spend how deep and how many cars on the road sometimes I dig more in the road. The ditches were nice and smooth when I got done in a day why use machine called gradeall this American name machine from Ohio, American are used to use the call badger run lot different like guys Work they can’t do I can do cause I do it without thinking
Why don’t you borrow Mr. P small track hoe take a ditch along the edge of your property to get the water out water to sit there no more I think it’s the best way to get it done. I wish I Live out there. I’ll love to take a nice smooth ditch four water drain off your property.
A good point you make there.. which puts the 10% voluntary .. yes voluntary tree planting scheme which carries an yearly income in prospective, but the farmers prefer to demonstrate shame on them.
@@johnhughes2113it might be voluntary but if they don't plant trees on perfectly good farm land they get no subsidies, which in turn will cause food prices to rise because of the lack of usable land and small farms closing down to be bought up by big farms just to be used to sell for carbon credits to large corporations and oil companies so they can say they are going green
Take care my dear and thank you for what you do. xx

😀xx Wishing for sunshine. Poor Farmers what they have to put up with as if Farming wasn't hard enough. xx
Spot on ditches we're always cleaned by men with shovels give someone a shovel now most would struggle to lift the the dame thing

Exactly same story here on south coast of Ireland Richard... raining since July.
It's been the same in East Anglia, fields sodden and ditches overflowing.
The weather has been unreal Richard I’ve never seen as much rain bloody endless let’s keep our fingers crossed for a nice hot summer
Crack on 💪🏻💪🏻👍🏻
Great rant m
sir Imake you right on it all
I have heard Tom Pemberton's Dad rant about the council not cleaning the ditches many, many times. It seems so simple to fix it and yet, they don't do it.
building nice new offices,
Good morning Richard. I'm surprised that you being funky that you haven't called the council etc .get on them and get them on the case

Good morning Richard ,good video!!!!! here in my surroundings all the Ditches wil be Clean out every Year! m.v.g.Simon Lich Oostwold Oldambt Netherlands
Many fields under water near Marlow Bucks and the Thames over it's banks.
The hedge rules the ditch!! if the hedge is on your side of the ditch the ditch belongs to you
Good morning the funky farmer
Totally agree with you, used to do preventative maintenance, someone thought that was a waste of money cause it never flood! Hmmmmmm
Love the rant 100% true
You could grow a helluva crop of grass carp down there….. don’t worry about the dying grass on the surface. It’s what’s happening to the roots that matters and how deep the water table is below the ground. That land might need aerating or subsoiling to help get the water down trough the soil
It's bad everywhere, coast to coast.
Love the rant 😂 but you talk absolute sense regarding the council, we have the same problem up here in the south of of Scotland. It is the same storey in Ireland no ditches being cleaned or water tables being cleared .
yeah no ditches, no rivers nit anything. Only places that don't usually flood now are where the farmers took the risk the clean them out themselves
The drainage up keep is scandalous Richard and council wondering why the water quality is 💩 when people dump there rubbish into the drains but council very quick to point finger and farmers brilliant video Richard thank you👌👍
Cranberries would do very well in those conditions.
Down here in new forest we have to do ditches that attach to our land as councils refuse to do them and claim its the land owners responsibility
Its crazy.
Good luck wishes to you all on the farm now 👍👍👍
Potentially an expensive winter 2024
You'll still have a good crop
We have the same problems in Worcestershire. The river Severn floods all over the fields. The rivers are not dredged anymore 😢

blimey id better look out for that
Yeah till they take the money off and you can't afford to get back in to cows.
Another day no trimming... Your bush must be massively overgrown by now...
thats progress.
We are the same in south west scotland, all the jobs are mounting up as we can't do anything the ground is saturated, our town did the same and now most of the shops are closed,it killed the town
From Cornwall to John o groats who would choose farming as a career choice rain rain rain

I hope the jet stream that's pushing so much moisture your way will finally shift into something more normal. This has been going on way too long.
The ditch is the neighbouring/adjacent landowners responsibility not council
Have you any ditches that may need digging out?
The grass would smell bad as well.
True
The greens will say cleaning the ditches won't help the floods... how they figure that out god knows...
Spot on with the Rant Richard. It doesn't help that Kids still at school, who have never done a days work in their life are now eligible to vote. I hear you.
Here they spent millions of $$$ to move a road over 50 ft. 😡
Dare I say I HAVEN'T GOT A HELLUVA CROP OF GRASS 😥
Richard it's common sense keep ditches and rivers cleaned out but unfortunately common sense is in very short supply these days

It's huge Oil and Gas and Coal ...your thinking you've flooded field but the climate is always been a balance for thousands of years
why do we all pay council tax just getting ripped off.
too tight to clean the ditches out
Soon be too dry
But yet they all blame global warming for all the flooding as you highlight Richard if ditches and drains were cleaned it would make a hell of a difference

This is climate change Richard. We all have to learn to live with it now 🐠. Maybe start a fish farm, smoked salmon for me 😋. Ok buddy craic on
Bloody UK weather
That’s not really a hell of a crop of grass is it lol
😄😁😆😅🤣😂🙂
Oh wow.. the Funky Farmer made another video complaining about the weather!!! Haha, all is well with the world...
