  • Today we are canning apple juice. Pressed apple juice is amazing and there are multiple ways to preserve it including freezing and canning which is the topic of todays video! Caning apple juice is fairly straight forward as far as canning is concerned and the recipe is simple quick and only requires water path canning to finish off the batch.
    Thanks so much for watching!

    I came across your channel because I was looking for a quicker way to can up my apple juice. I am now a subscriber. To steam juice apples were taking 30 minutes per quart I need 26 bushels a year for our consumption on hand. I dont want to spend over a week doing it this way. I had to find a shortcut. Your chipper idea is genius. Thank you so much for putting this idea on there. Love your content. Finished your longkeeper tomato video also. Going to get some of them now. I hate having to buy tomatoes in the winter. Will be watching all your videos.

      Thank you so much. This year has been great for apples and we have managed to put away quite a few jars of juice. Hoping to work on a bit more this week.

    The best canned apple juice video I've found thanks for the info. I wish I would have seen your video first I brought mine to a boil based on another video. It still tastes good but how much does that change the flavor? I have a ton more apples so I will be repeating the process with your method next ☺️

      Boiled apple juice is still tasty, we just found it had more of a cider taste to it. We used to just freeze our pressed juice so it stayed tasting like " fresh juice", but now this is our preferred method. Thank you so much for watching and for your great comment 😀

    Hello from the Uk😊 do you shut the lid while hot when you want to freeze? Many thanks!

    Two questions? I was always told not to use ground apples because they get bugs really quick, is that a problem? Also, how long will it last on the shelf?

    • @HickorycroftFarm

      well I guess for the windfall apples it does depend. They do have a much higher likelihood of having worms etc. but for us at least it seems to depend on the temperature and to a degree the tree (some seem far more prone to insects). Also I would say you want to keep an eye on it and not let them sit on the ground for long. We keep an eye on the trees and typically only harvest windfalls from trees we know just dropped their apples etc. As far as lasting on the shelf we are still using apple juice from our 2023 harvests so I would say easily a year.

      @@HickorycroftFarm I’m going to put a tarp underneath I’ve decided. That way I know which ones just fell fresh in the night and less chance of the worms. I’m on an island near the water so the wind can pick up in the evening.

    Doesnt the juice boil during the water bath canning process?

    How long does canned juice stay fresh? And how long does frozen juice stay fresh?

    • @HickorycroftFarm
      @HickorycroftFarm  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be honest, it doesn't last long around here. We have 3 jars still left from last year, opened one just the other day and tasted the same as when we made it. The frozen probably depends on the container. We usually had it all drank up within a few months because either was so good. Not sure how helpful that was though.

    do you do anything to keep the juice from turning brown after pressing before canning?

    • @HickorycroftFarm
      @HickorycroftFarm  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No we don't. We find that the taste is still great. We are about to harvest for the rest of our juice making for the season and now that temperatures here are almost freezing, the juice will be a lot lighter in colour. Unfortunately this year, some of our apples were so early that they had to be picked.

      We found our property on realtor.ca It was before the housing market went crazy. I think it is a lot tougher now as things move very quickly and what you offer can really determine your fate. Good luck in your search.
