I have both. I like the Gopro (Hero and Hero 3), but the Ion actually produces nicer video results overall. You can view plenty of tests that show how washed out the Gopro looks in comparison. However, you can fix the video of the Gopro in post. But if you want nicer looking video straight out of the camera, the Ion is superior. The shape of the Ion is streamlined. Anyone who runs, bikes or surfs may prefer the Ion. For underwater I like the Gopro better. Audio of the Ion is also better, unless you take the Gopro out the case. Bottom line: Ion was designed to provide superior out of camera results and it does this in many cases.
I am looking for a secondary camera to supplement my GoPro Hero 4 Silver that doesn't break the bank. My first choice is the Hero 3 White for $199 since a lot of the Hero 4 accessories will work with the Hero 3 White. My 2nd choice is this ION Air you just reviewed....however it just looks awkward to use? My last choice is the Sony Action Cam HDR-AS30V which I do not know much about but it does have good reviews. If you had to choose which camera would you choose as a secondary camera? Thanks! Good review of the ION!!!
Mike's Tips, Tricks & Reviews If you are looking to mix footage from both cameras into the same project, then you need something thats very close to the Hero 4 Silver quality. The White won't really cut it. Are you able to pick up a Hero 3+ Black at a cheap price now its discontinued?
I did see a 3+ Black for $289 refurb on eBay but I wasn't looking to spend that much...That's why I mentioned the other 2 cameras along with the 3 White...I was also looking at the 3 Silver which is at $199 new....The White I can get for $139...
iftibashir FYI I ended up getting a used Hero 3+ Black for $270 plus some extra accessories...Based on the ebay auction the guy only used it once for a wedding so it's mint...
I bought one on clearance at Wal-Mart about 4 years ago for 20 bucks, never used it with an app was happy with it but where you plug the charger into it somehow got pushed in and won't connect.
I am trying to find a helmet cam that loop records but also let's me protect the last X minutes when I press a button. So when something interesting happens, I can press the button and then when I get home I don't have to search through hours of footage...
Good sales video, but doesn't help if there are issues with setting this up. The wifi set up is not as straight forward as they say it is still working on this one, no solutions yet.
+Sergio Gugliandolo What? I think what you are trying to ask: is there a way to add an external battery? And yes, you get an external battery pack and plug it into the charging port.
Shredder Skateboarding Im assuming it can be replaced due to the screws around the front, which will release it. Saying that, Ive not come across replacements. You may be best trying to contacting Ion directly?
I saw something from wall street journal that ion camera corporation went bankrupt in July 2016 with assets of $12mil and debts of $15mil. I still see this camera on amazon on sale. How can they sell when they know no one will be able download firmware, and android app is non existent from the store, it is still available on the IOS app store. I tried the newest version, but could not setup the camera on wifi.
Great review! I would definetely prefer to buy the standard GoPro Hero, it is cheaper and better. A big downside i see on the Ion is the lack of a little screen. I tmust be terrible that you have to take out your phone, turn WiFi on, open the app and then be able to change settings while whith the GoPro you are able to do that immediately with the little screen. The GoPro also is sooo much more versatile and has so many more useful accesories and aftermarket batteries you can buy with it and in the end you will just prefer the GoPro. Since the GoPro came out so many brands are trying to compete with it, but yet, non has succeeded in my point of view.
I have used both and prefer the ion air, due to the already water proof design which does look good under water. I use it for ice fishing. And has a richer picture.
+Ozzy Gull Sound isn't bad with the built in mic. I have used this one. There is no port for external microphone on this model. The AV port is a 2.5 AV port and not the 3.5 External mic port. The mic port was added to the Air Pro 3.
camera also stops recording after approximately 30 minutes. the camera I have has several problems. I really like the style and ease of use but the quality isn't there. shame
+Mr Drizz No the settings can be changed by connecting it to any sort of computer or tablet that has a USB port. You don't need the wifi podz. There is very little to change in the settings anyways.
battery in mine only last approximately 45 minutes. Anyone know if I can remove end cap and plug in a battery pack? Moisture isn't a issue. I use camera for cycling in good weather.
+dmitry92203 You can charge and record at the same time so it should work. Are you using the wifi pod all the time? The wifi uses up the battery fast and I find little use for it.
Hello . I watched a boat load of ion cam videos and was ready to click the buy button after some reasearch . I went into a local pawn shop that had one of the ion cams . I did this just to get hands on and get a first person view . Then a question arose in my head . How does one change the battery when it dies ? I called ION . And after a long hold on the phone the rep told me that you can't change the batteries in any of there cameras . Which if one is the type that takes care of there stuff to make it last .. This is wherein a problem for this cam arose for me . The only reason I can see for not engineering a camera with the ability to change the battery is the hardware is not designed to last any longer then the original battery is going to last . So it seems to me that they are not building a brand . Because a brand is not THROWAWAY . Do you know if I am wrong about this I would love to hear anything you may know . Because I really wanted one of these cameras and want to like them . But I can't get over the fact that it will only last as long as the battery lasts .
The ION rep is talking rubbish. The battery lasts around 2.5 hours - they cant expect you to throw the camera away after that amount of time. ALL action cameras are rechargeable. This ION camera comes with a USB cable which connects to the MicroUSB port on the rear of the device and charges the internal battery - its mentioned in the video at around the 4:25 mark where we take a look at the rear ports...
I'm guessing iftibashir completely misunderstood the question XD From what I saw about this camera, yeah, the battery is internal and can't be changed, so when it's life cycle comes to an end you either put an external battery to it or throw it away as timothy pointed. From my point of view, Li-ion batteries last a reasonable time, about 500 cycles in average. After that it starts losing power. So if you completely recharge it once a day it will last 1.5 years before starting to lose power and another 2 years before its unusable. If you want an action camera to last for 10 years you must go to a camera that can replace the battery for sure. I just think i would have bought a new camera in 5 years time at the most.
Yeah I bought mine at Walmart on clearance for $73. I wouldn't have bought it otherwise. Thought it would be good for underwater in streams and such where I live.
+Jeff Grantham the Air Pro Lite does not have an external microphone jack. The AV port on the Air Pro Lite is a 2.5 jack for AV. The external mic uses the 3.5 port. The Air Pro 3 has the 3.5 external mic port this one does not.
This was on clearance at walmart for $35, so I tried it. It wasn't even worth the clearance price. Video was very noisy and could only be used in bright light. No audio at all from the mic, but did have lots of background grinding sounds.
I just bought one at Walmart NIB for 7 bucks! It may be worth it to check your local store. There may be a CD in box with your software. I love their clearance days so much.
I had a AirPro 2 and found their tech support SUCKED. Was trying to get it to work with phone and finally ended up burning the camera mother board up. I wouldn't recomend this to anyone. No matter how good something is, if you can't get support, then it just trash.
This camera sucks. I bought one months ago it was glitchy and would not communicate, I replaced it and then the new one had problems with "auto rotate" feature. I ended up taking it back to the store for good. The other day I saw it on sale for $80 so I got it again and now it would not communicate with my pc and the wifi module does not come on. The website only offers the downloads for Mac, nothing for PC from the web support. Terrible website with pages on ERROR 404 My wife went to get it replaced right now, I will try again and test it to the full extent of its features, I will give up on ION if this one fails too.
The Ion Air Pro is junk. Bought 2 wifi podz...neither work. App was written by 2nd grade students, is clunky and worthless. Customer Service is self defeatest and non-caring. The camera works as standalone ok, less wifi capabilities.
I agree stick to GoPro. This cam is stupid. When making a c a m e r a video & audio quality is top priority. When making an action camera it needs to be rugged. That bubble lens will break or scratch the 1st time you drop it. Underwater footage will look like sh*t. Its barrel style is old. Ion is overpriced wannabes. Anytime you see a barrel style you know they are clueless about action cams.

Robert Brody is it cycle recording bro?
The GOPRO does not have better picture video results 2020
That information was very helpful I got the camera yesterday for my b-day. It is the perfect camera because I don't need super high quality.
The AV port on the Air Pro Lite is a 2.5 AV jack and not a 3.5 for external microphone. The Air Pro 3 has the 3.5 external mic jack.
+firemedic520 This is good to know, thank you.
This device should be interesting as a car dashcam, considering the low price of used ones at ebay :)
I am looking for a secondary camera to supplement my GoPro Hero 4 Silver that doesn't break the bank. Hey, Is the ion battery built in? and in long time can the battery start lose capacity just like It happens with batteries of cell phones?
Buona sera volevo sapere il prezzo della Telecamera. Grazie
I am trying to find a helmet cam that loop records but also let's me protect the last X minutes when I press a button. So when something interesting happens, I can press the button and then when I get home I don't have to search through hours of footage...
What's the difference between this and the kitvision rush HD100W, witch you can bag for £59.99 on Amazon.co.uk
This has only MOV format recording...( HD & WVGA) . is there a way to convert it into MP4 ?
Can you record & download videos without the wifi
I just bought this camera the other day. is there a way to use an external mic?
Good sales video, but doesn't help if there are issues with setting this up. The wifi set up is not as straight forward as they say it is still working on this one, no solutions yet.
just got one for $20 on clearance at Target (after a $10 coupon and Red Card). Not sure if I even need it but too good of a deal to pass up.
does exist a external battery that you can put on it like the accessories of the wify??
+Sergio Gugliandolo What?
I think what you are trying to ask: is there a way to add an external battery? And yes, you get an external battery pack and plug it into the charging port.
I recently scratched my ion air pro lens, is it possible to replace the lens. If so, does any one know where I can buy a replacement??
Shredder Skateboarding Im assuming it can be replaced due to the screws around the front, which will release it. Saying that, Ive not come across replacements. You may be best trying to contacting Ion directly?
I need help with my ion air pro! can I use multiple ion cameras with WiFi?
has anyone used these on a motorcycle? I'd like to know what the quality is like.
Thank you
I have but I have a hard time downloadin it. the WiFi app sucks and my computer crashed so unable to download
I was able to download 1 time and I really did like it
cifer6900 thanks for your reply appreciated
What about the microphone? Can you add external microphone to talk inside the helmet?
Berk Olcay yeah you can it has that option on the back of the camera hope that helped and that I wasn't too late
I am trying to find out what happened to ioncamera. They claimed to have a Twitter but their Twitter never existed.

You made up my mind, the basic go pro is good enough.
Is this suitable for a daily commuter camera application?
*computer
@@seymentube1808 No, commuter - as in a dashcam.
does the original box come with mounts?
What about the sound ? Is the microphone any good ??
Thanks

Does it record in loop or it stops when memory card is full?
rebelsoul777 I believe you can set either ;o)
Have option to connect the microphone in the Helmet ? Thanks
How can i find the ion at the app store?
camera also stops recording after approximately 30 minutes. the camera I have has several problems. I really like the style and ease of use but the quality isn't there. shame
Make sure in the settings that you turn auto off to off. Mine used to shut down after 3 min until I changed that. Hope that helps.
So, to confirm, you can't alter the settings without the wifi podz? If that's true why sell it without.
+Mr Drizz Probably just down to cost!
+Mr Drizz No the settings can be changed by connecting it to any sort of computer or tablet that has a USB port. You don't need the wifi podz. There is very little to change in the settings anyways.
Any still selling a wifi podz?

HOW can I reduce wind noise? No matter where or how I mount it wind is all I can hear... any DIY tips I can do to solve this
Use a puffy thing referred to as a dead cat in the camera scene
I forgot to mention they have to put the dead cat over the mic
Is there a way to make the ion air pro save only the full hd videos, instead of both fhd and hd?
Shredder Skateboarding I don't think so :o(
Thanks
can I synch this with my cell phone and view everything that way.

does the ion come with the motorbike helmet fitting
Cathy Bradberry Were you watching?
The WiFi podz on this camera is useless and customer service will not respond to emails. Camera has good video quality and style but that's about it.
i do think it's to expensive for that when i can get Sj4000 Wifi at Half of the prive .
Very informative thank you so much
my camera work perfect
