I was so perplexed about the fact that I spent a week in the country without seeing blacks.
I felt all alone at a point

Australia racism is silent they wont say it in your face, but it's there. When i moved here 15 years ago, no matter how full the bus or train is, no one would like to sit beside u. And if so hard to fit in as well. I think now it's getting better or probably i just managed to fit in

Nurse Deo most of the the time that I see Aussies being accused of being racist towards immigrants is when they speak out about how frustrated they are with our Federal governments immigration policies. There is an ever increasing number of Aussies getting angry with the huge influx of immigrants arriving here because the infrastucture just cant cope with them. There are currently over 13,000 new arrivals every week all of them need sevices and somewhere to live. We are in the middle of a housing crisis and the majority of those immigrants want to live in our biggest cities. Immigrants who come from India, China Africa, middle east etc. are obviosly going to stand out but I dont believe that everyday Aussies are going to be openly racist or show hostility towards them regardless of their personal view. If this government does nothing about cutting back the numbers and things continue to get worse then yes there may be a danger that people will become less welcoming. You can already see that happening in other parts of the world with far right nationlist governments sweeping into power on the promise to cut back or even remove immigrants from their countries.. I,m afraid recent events like defacing war memorials in Canberra and violent protests over issues in other parts of the world does nothing to win support from Australians for multiculturism. Do I support cutting back on immigration ? absolutely,... am I a racist ? absolutely not because I mean cutting back on immigration from all parts of the world...., do I welcome immigrants arriviing here ? of course I am Australian my personal view on the subject is irrelevent and I will express that at the ballot box.. People who have come here (including yourself) are certainly welcome regardless of where they came from or how they look. The issues we are currently facing in this country cant be blamed on those arriving here in the hope of becoming new citizens they are problems of our own making that are usually driven by greed. Showing animosity towards new arrivals is definately being racist expressing a negative opinion in the proper forum about our immigration policy is not.

Living in regional areas might change your perspective regarding racism in Australia. Sadly, folks in regional Australia tend to be unexposed and poorly educated. Sometimes they don't even know they are being racists. How do you explain, "you look beautiful for a "Black person"? And the educated Anglo-Saxon folks who are in regional Australia think they are God's gifts to humanity even though they may be extremely incompetent to do the job. They don't appear to be afraid to shove it in your face at times. Please continue to live in your lovely cosmopolitan Sydney. Best wishes to you.
