      @@MikeRussell my mic is constantly cracking & don’t know why. only happens when i use a program called voicemeeter.

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Voicemeter is introducing clipping I would suggest. For what reason are you using voicemeter? Is it something you could remove from your chain?

    • @djcook
      @djcook 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MikeRussell it makes my voice sound better, and adds more gain. Is there anyway i can get both of those benefits some other way?

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The extra gain will be why it’s cracking, the signal is over modulating. The better option would be the dbx 286s in this video for real time processing and there’s a clip light to ensure you don’t over modulate.

      @@user-pw4qi4gc60 You can and if your interface or mixer doesn't have insert or send and return channels, only way to connect SM7B to this, is using cloudlifter or external pre-amp. Only thing you can't connect to DBX 286S is guitar or other line level instrument (both the JACK and XLR inputs are for mic level only)

    I just got a dbx 286s....it's amazing. The noise gate in the DAW is not nearly as slick, and it's not live like the 286s...this is important for saving time and tweaking things up just right....live practice. I can use the output gain to drive a Sony little ICD-Px470 perfectly..it drives the noise right on out on the (ext.input)(line-in). Super clean and refined through the 286s. A lot less messy than setting up the focusrite/scarlett when on location or moving the portable booth around. I can still do things in the DAW but it does save a lot of tedium going through the 286s, and noise is a distant memory.. Thanks for the recommended settings!!. Compression is the one thing I will need to fiddle with and learn more... What a wonderful piece of kit for voiceover! And it's not $1000...mine was $200...and more than paid for by the 2 FetHeads I would have needed.

    Thanks for this, Mike. I've just followed your guidance - tweaking for my own voice, of course - and I'm sounding a lot better (though I say so myself!) I've had the dbx for a while now and - although it's a great piece of kit - was getting frustrated at being unable to achieve the voice quality I wanted for radio and podcasting. I've checked out a few "dbx settings" videos on TH-cam and, for me, yours has been by far the most helpful.

    LF and HF DETAIL is more than bass/treble... for example, the LF works by boosting gain at around 80Hz but also cut at around 250Hz, it makes multiple adjustements at boosting/cutting different frequencies on the same knob, same for the HF button. I think the noise gate on the 286s is one of the best, it efficient, cuts mouth noises, room echo and it works really softly, no hard cut or open is heard when properly setup ! Nice preamp on the cheap !

    Yes! at least somebody really understand how DBX units gain structure works.👍🏽. I found interesting that you noticed that if you keep it bellow the yellow light it actually will sound really good. Most of the videos I watched ppl using DBX compressors they just crank the input thinking the yellow light its the optimal level ...in fact is not. Yellow light is actually the pre clipping level on this units. I tested this long time ago and found out that keeping your inout level on the green almost peaking the yellow randomly will make the compression stage more "friendly" and easy to dial. You kinda get more control and cleaner results.

    Hey, Mike. Love your vids; thanks for making them to help all of us out! I also love my dbx 286s, but unfortunately I have to keep the 80Hz high-pass filter turned off at all times and compensate elsewhere to mitigate background rumble. At 1:45 into the video you note that the human voice doesn't usually go below 80Hz, but that's not totally accurate. The typical range for someone who sings bass is C2 (65.4Hz) to around F4 (349.2Hz). Me, I can't hit F4 unless I go falsetto. In spoken recordings, I can reach G1 (50Hz) and typically bottom out--if doing trailer-like recordings or villain voices--at 58-62Hz. That part's just a personal problem. :-) But I'm certainly not unique. 80Hz is just a shade below E2 on a piano, and really isn't all that low. I'd think anyone who is a natural bass or even baritone (the typical singing range for a baritone starts at E2) would clip vital range and depth with the 286s high-pass filter enabled. So just a cautionary note (pun intended) for 286s users with deeper voices: analyze your frequency ranges to understand what enabling the 80Hz filter might mean to your recordings.

    I'm not quite sure why do you have the Gain set to +30 dB and Output Gain set to -30 dB this time?
    In your first tutorial, you had the following settings:
    Gain: ~30dB
    Output Gain: 0dB
    And when I checked tutorials for dbx 286s from other people on TH-cam, they all recommended to have Output Gain set to: 0db.
    Could someone please explain this to me? Is it always depending on what microphone and the amount of gain on audio interface you have? Or how should one determine what to use? What's the general "guide" for this kind of stuff, so it does not clip and sound clean?
    Thank you! :-)

    Wow. I've had this for two years, and I'm pretty sure ever setting I used wrong.
    I always turned the output up halfway, and never the gain. How will using these two settings swapped make a difference on the unit's output?
    I'm using a ShureSM7B into a cloud lifter CL-1, into the DBX286, into a MG12XU mixer.
    My theory doing this is I'm getting clean gain form the lifter, so I'm not forcing gain out of the DBX, but the output is still giving gain.
    I'm going in circles here. Please help me out lol
    For reference, my DBX settings;
    0 gain, compressor 4 and 7, de-esser 4k and 4, enhancer 0 and 1.5, no gate, output at 0.

    Is there a device like the 286 that is smaller and portable? Perhaps in a non-rackmount? I'd love a gate/compressor/enhancer but not in this form-factor.

      Maybe look at the GoXLR, it has equalizer, compressor, limiter, de-esser, and gate. Its made for game streamers but works for any voice stuff I guess.

    I know this is 3 years old now, but I cannot look past the fact that your overall gain staging from preamp to interface is ALL kinds of messed up. Bypassing the processing should not result in overmodulated signal, especially when your output/makeup gain is almost all the way down on the 286s. That means you have a huge problem with the input on your interface.
    The 286s is not supposed to correct terrible gain staging. Your passthrough signal (processing bypassed) should be completely clean. Fix that, and you might find that every other setting you have on the 286s needs to be reconsidered.

      Thank you for your feedback! I appreciate your attention to detail and will address the issue of gain staging in my future videos to ensure a clean passthrough signal.

    Thanks Mike - great video as always. For a multi channel set up for a radio station, would you recommend 3 of these compressors or a single compressor able to handle three/four channels?

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The dbx286s is a single microphone processor so you need one per mic.

      @@MikeRussell yes - but just wondered if you knew whether the Behringer MDX4600 (for example) would be good enough or would it really suffer on quality? It’s basically three times cheaper…!😜

      The dbx286s is the one I have personal experience of and would recommend.

    Hello Mike. Thanks for this video. Got this unit on your recommendation at Adobe Max this year. Great presentation. One quick question. I have a MixPre3 as a USB interface - How much gain should I place? Should I use the Mic PreAMP from the DBX or that of the MixPre 3 to up the gain. thx

      Thanks! So glad you were able to make my session at MAX and great you enjoyed. I'd output max volume from your audio interface into the dbx first then tweak on dbx.

    Mike Russell I currently use an EV RE27n/d into a Soundcraft Notepad-8 mixer. I'm going to be purchasing a DBX 286s but my concern is since the mixer has a mic preamp built-in how do I connect it without making a mess of things?

  • @Latzi
    @Latzi 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    hey first of all this Video was great! If i have another external preamp, the dbx 286s and an interface: Can i use the other external preamp and the features of the dbx, without using its preamp? Hope you understood me well... much love

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can if you want although the dbx286s has an excellent pre-amp so you probably wouldn't need anything in between the mic and the dbx286s

    Mike, do you have a vid on interfaces? Currently have the 2i2 but looking to upgrade to an AC powered, any recommendations?

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t have a video on this. I use the 2i2 as also a Soundcraft Signature 12 MTK mixing desk.
