Mum tries out Windows Longhorn Build 4074 (2004)

- Once again Diana uses 3 different computers at once. On one laptop computer she has windows xp (2001) and on the other Windows Vista (2006/2007). She is testing Windows Longhorn Build 4074 on the main desktop computer while comparing it to where it came from (Windows Xp) to where it was headed (Vista). The version of longhorn she is testing is one of the last versions of longhorn based on xp before the development reset in 2004. Since xp couldn't cope with all the stuff microsoft wanted to add to longhorn they had to start fresh and build longhorn on windows server 2003.
Tasks Given:
What time is it?
Write, save and open a text document
What's 3.5x14
Change the desktop background
Add a gadget to the sidebar
Close the sidebar
Turn off your computer

The mother in this video uses Windows XP (2001) as her main OS. Would you like to see her try out Linux, Mac, Windows, OS/2 or other operating systems through history such as AmigaOS? Then give your suggestions in the comments section. Give this video lots of likes, views, favorites and comments if you want my mum to try out other operating systems. I am open to any operating system suggestions you give especially if these videos go semi-viral (over 100,000 views). This channel is dedicated to me "introducing" people (mum, dad, me) to different operating systems they have never used before and leaving them to suffer in confusion struggling to do anything in an unknown computer environment... or see if these other operating systems are better than Microsoft Windows.
I forgot how beautiful the UI on Vista actually was.
DEFINITELY was ahead of its time.
They put alot of effort into the ui but not the actual operating system.

@Cam Ryder but these startup and shutdown sounds are fake
@@SimpleoN69 proof?
Longhorn does but they added features for a future os so they had to do this so they could get the right features.
@@lucascg0290 longhorn is not a beta it is it's own os.
its looks like an advanced version of Windows XP
It also looks like a modern version of Windows XP
That's what it is meant to be but since it got scrapped they used the interface for longhorn and made it even advanced and modern. Longhorn was meant to be a advanced modern version of XP but basic. Vista then would be the advanced version of longhorn and that's where Vista gets its look because of Longhorn. Most of the themes and features in longhorn are in Vista, it also explains how Windows 7 gets its look because that's a revamped version on Vista.
Wutwutwut wutwutwut
It had features that were re-introduced only in Windows 10 (for example, Contacts)

Longhorn Info From urbandictionary:
"It featured a sidebar built into explorer.exe and was based on the Windows XP codebase up until Windows Longhorn Build 4093. From Windows Longhorn build 4008, explorer.exe had a severe memory leak and wasn't fully fixed until the development reset. The development was reset in September 2004 and based on Windows Server 2003 SP1 codebase. The first Windows Longhorn build to feature the Windows Server 2003 SP1 codebase was Windows Longhorn Build 5048."

THIS BUILD DIDN'T LOSE AERO!!! you just need certain drivers.
And renaming some theme files.
But the problem is some people think this is too much work and if there is an issue, they need a snapshots if neccessary. Now, we need VMware 6.5 for DWM because it will go black screen if you are using latest version.
I am sure you were talking about 4074 and you are correct.
@@aungkhant5752 If you run the latest version of VMware on 6.5 compatibility I bet you it will work just fine. If you were using build 5219 of Vista for example, you need the actual VMware version that is older such as VMware 11 or something otherwise it will glitch very badly when you get it working.

The second part I was aware of and even mentioned in my video that this build of longhorn was one of the last versions based off xp before the development reset where they began to user server 2003 as a base for vista/longhorn. It's a shame transparency in longhorn build 4074 was not enabled by default :(
The theme almost looks like pencil lead
@OSFirstTimer what hardware was used to run 4074
Came back after approx 5 years. And oh wow the nostalgia! Now I’m an adult
4:04 did you notice in the corner of the iPad it said Longhorn XP? Weird but true!
I really like these videos. They're all interesting because they have very good comparisons. Especially, they don't use big words that the average person won't understand. It just makes sense.
lol I love how she's saying "that looks more modern" in a ten-year-old video about an old OS build. It still looks more modern to me than Windows 11 does now.
The side bar is essentially what Active Desktop was in XP.
i might have a reason why vista was released on 2007 even though it was finished in 2006. they finished it but they tried to find and fix the bugs before releasing it to public.
For some reason i find this really interesting. Seeing all the evolutions of windows Longhorn/Vista.
Me too bud
I mean it's a kind of drama thing
it could be good if they didn't rush it for 2006 smh
@@thatkindofboi9955 Nah

My school's computers are Windows XP, but the year is still 2001 because it ended support in 2014. That means there's 13 more years until expiration.
Nup, build 3790 was made a bit after build 4074. From wikipedia:
"Build 3790.1232 (build date of August 19, 2004) is notable, as it was the first build of Longhorn based on the Server 2003 codebase, but with the Windows XP interface."
Now here's info on the build my mum tried:
"Build 4074 (build date of April 25, 2004) This build introduced a new Jade theme, and replaced many XP icons with new Longhorn icons. Also, the font Segoe UI was introduced for the Jade theme."
I wish segoe ui was not the font used in windows 10, of course windows 10 didn't exist yet when this comment was made, but...
Win7 should look like that Longhorn, but with all the Win7 features and stuff
longhorn theme for windows 7 is what you need
This is what happends when Windows XP and Windows Vista have a baby.
So Windows XP injected some code into Vista? 😏😏
...wtf?
omg lol

CORRECTIONS: Windows Longhorn Buld 4074 does have the Aero theme, but it's off by default and it requires a patch too.
I love the plex theme, I hope someone leaks build 4018, the one with the jelly effect when moving windows.

Well I don’t give a fuck Windows 10 is better then Windows 8.

Jack Long yea windows 8 sucks
in Windows Longhorn Build 4074 you can get the transparent theam only if you have compatible display drivers
Longhorn was originally based on xp when it was being developed from 2002 to 2004. The build of longhorn in this video is one of the last builds of longhorn based on xp before the development reset. Builds after the development reset were based on server 2003 as you said. For more information watch the first 10 minutes of the video where I go through the longhorn build history.
OSFirstTimer the codebase for the early longhorn builds was actually release candidate 1 of windows server 2003
We just did a Windows alpha/beta build so we need to check out other operating systems first. Plus we did Chicago not so long ago
"It's almost vistery." XD Great Video and you have a very solid knowledge! Did you take notes or have you learned everything by heart?
It was on a random torrent somewhere but I am not allowed to link to it.
I would link the windows xp source code her but I can't unfortunately
Personally I think Longhorn would have been a slow OS if it used the Aero theme in 2004, computers wouldn’t be able to handle it.
Yeah, Longhorn was unstable. That’s why it had a development reset. It would’ve been as bad as Vista. If Microsoft would’ve waited to implement the new big features to the Blackcomb (Windows 7) project that they had intended to, Longhorn wouldn’t had a development reset, and Vista would’ve been released sooner and be more stable.
Correction:4076, 408x, and 409x did have transparenct but not under Slate, there was a Jade theme which works similar to Aero and Basic in final Vista, which the latter two appeared in 5048
Windows longhorn had the most interesting history. Although windows 8 and windows 7 were kinda interesting they didn't have as much changes as vista/longhorn.
Build 3790 was actually built on August 19, 2004, not August 14. Also, to turn off the sidebar in pre-reset builds, you right click the sidebar or taskbar, left click "Properties" and uncheck "Enable the Sidebar". The start button in the Slate theme does have the word "start" on it, but only if the sidebar is disabled.
Longhorn 3500-3799 is based on Server 2003 RC1
Post-Reset 3790 and 5000-6002 are based on Server 2003 SP1 RC1
Development started in 2001.
It is labeled as XP due to being a client recompile of Server 2003.
The "twist" effect is not in the leaked 4015, you can activate it in 3713, 3718 and 4001 by using the display control panel, the demo was build 4018.
4040 was the last with Plex.
You skipped 4053.
4074 did NOT loose transparency. You need a compatible driver and start it with "sbctl -start"
Longhorn 4074 had Jade theme with Segoe UI and also Aero, and animations in the Explorer's coloured bar
How about in the next episode "Mum tries out the deep web."
+The Readers Corner look up his mom trying tails. She goes on the deep web on that one.

Not all operating systems display the time where it is visible at all times (especially older ones such as windows 1.0 (1985) and AmigaOS Workbench 1.1 (1985)). Although I have to admit adding a task "paint an image file".

*Windows* with *Horns* that are *long*

This was uploaded on my birthday :)
I am of firm belief that Windows XP was called XP because when XP is turned sideways, it resembles a face with the eyes crossed and tounge sticking out. Like: "XP LOL YOU BOUGHT THIS SHIT?"
No, it represents Windows eXPerience if you play with the screensavers you'll see it.
Yes, I know that. I was joking.
Erik Boesen More like Windows SEXP
That would also work. *****
***** Yeah I know lol
Actually you have raised a very good question. Most online sources I have found say longhorn was originally based on xp and then after build 4093 in 2004 there was a development reset since the xp code base couldn't handle the advanced features/plans for longhorn. At this point sources say server 2003 was used as a new base for longhorn which was then more stable and able to better handle Microsoft's plans for longhorn.
Can you link to an online source proving that early builds Weren't XP based

imagine if MS mange to release Longhorn imagine the different outcome for vista it would've been revolutionary
Happy 20th birthday September 12th 2004 longhorn build. I'm writing this comment on September 12th, 2024.
Longhorn was never an official version of Windows, but Vista was.
Is it better with touch screen? If so we will do it on the surface pro when it arrives ;) Sadly that won't be till around the 10th of march :(
I choose this build because it was one of the last builds I count as being longhorn (the os with xp at its base but microsoft scraped). I guess it would have been somewhat disaterous though if microsoft didn't move away from using xp at its base. It was quite unstable...
I mean, they've mad windows 10 a mess with junk nobody ever needed, and somehow consider longhorn bad and windows 10 amazing.
I say they should just go back to windows 7 and completely recode from there, windows 10 had became a huge mess.
Actually these builds weren't based on XP either, but on Server 2003 RC1. Before the Reset, they actually merged in the code improvements from Server 2003 SP1, as evidenced by build 4093, which includes many of XP SP2 / Server 2003 SP1's UI changes absent in 4074. The Reset was actually necessary not because of the code base switch, but because much of the new code in Longhorn was written in "Managed C++", a programming language with serious design flaws that the .NET team decided to scrap in favor of a new, incompatible C++ variant called "C++/CLI". Converting all the Managed C++ code to C++/CLI was deemed more difficult than just rewriting everything.
Aero and Longhorn's design language combined + Windows 10's multi desktop feature and window drawing API (UWP) would create one of the most intuitive and best looking OSes of all time
When I first used Windows Vista, I accidentally put the computer in hibernation state instead of shutdown several times before I became accustomed to shutting it down.
I thought Windows Vista was the prettiest version of Windows, though Windows 7 is very similar in appearance and it has better performance.
I miss the Luna theme very much
Windows Longhorn could have been grate if Microsoft kept with it. Imagine if it was actually released? I love the idea of the sidebar. Microsoft kept it through into Vista but it wasn't as anticipated as what it would have been in Longhorn. I think it is more productive compared to what Vista was and really, it could have been a start screen killer as in a way it could use live tiles. I could just show us when we get emails, a message on Skype or even on Facebook. Microsoft had something good with the side bar but they completely killed it with the idea of the start screen. I am not saying Microsoft should have got rid of the start menu as I think it is very productive. I just think that the sidebar could have been a big thing if Microsoft saw the potential of it and also a alternative to the live tiles in Windows 8.
late comment but the Longhorn project never used windows xp as it's base, but actually used server 2003 rc1s codebase, while post reset used server 2003 SP1 Betas codebase
I was expecting the longhorn startup sound
Same with me
Its fake actually, the actual Longhorn uses xp sounds

5:33 I'm gonna correct you on that one because you actually can enable aero on WIndows Longhorn 4074 but the image you shown here was probably just misleading. You can enable aero on there as I said, but it would be far more complicated compared to the final release of Vista and even Windows 7 betas according to my VM tests because you need the proper drivers and you need to modify the theme files to do that.
