Mum Tries Out Windows Chicago Build 73g (1993)

  • This time around Diana uses 3 different computers at once. On one laptop computer she has windows 3.11 (August 1993) and on the other Windows 95 (1995). She is testing Windows Chicago build 73 (an early version of windows 95 built on 2nd December 1993) on the main desktop computer while comparing it to where it came from (Windows 3.11) to where it was headed (Windows 95). Many differences are discovered and it was quite interesting to see Windows 95 and Windows 3.11 mixed into each other with Windows Chicago.
    Tasks Given:
    What time is it?
Write, save and open a text document
What's 84/2 (She came up with her own though...)
    Change the desktop background
    Turn off your computer
More Info on Chicago Builds Here: en.wikipedia.or...
The mother in this video uses Windows XP (2001) as her main OS. Would you like to see her try out Linux, Mac, Windows, OS/2 or other operating systems through history such as AmigaOS? Then give your suggestions in the comments section. Give this video lots of likes, views, favorites and comments if you want my mum to try out other operating systems. I am open to any operating system suggestions you give especially if these videos go semi-viral (over 100,000 views). This channel is dedicated to me "introducing" people (mum, dad, me) to different operating systems they have never used before and leaving them to suffer in confusion struggling to do anything in an unknown computer environment... or see if these other operating systems are better than Microsoft Windows.

It's good to keep in mind that Windows 3.0, which 3.11 is just an update of, was released in 1990... 5 years before 95 and 3 years before 3.11 so it wasn't as quick of a change as you imply here.

That's a very interesting video. Great to see the road from 3.11 to 95. Now I finally know the history of the menu that pops up when you click the left side of the title bar in 95 and later. I never used 3.11, but I used the feature to double click the left side of the title bar to close a window a lot. Nice feature on a big screen and your mouse pointer is on the left side of the screen. Saves a lot moving around with the mouse. I never knew it was actually the way to close windows in 3.11.

FYI... During development, there's lots of changes being made to the code, and developers are compiling / building the code relatively frequently to incorporate all the changes. Every time the code is compiled, the build number is incremented. Build 73 is, well, the 73rd build. Obviously higher build numbers were released later in the development cycle. Every released version also has a build number which you can find in Help - About in Explorer.

When people request to "try out longhorn" they are referring to the non publically released 2004 version before the development reset. The idea is that the direction longhorn in 2004 was going was amazing but then the development reset made them restart and practically develop vista which looked very different to longhorn. Many people are still longhorn fans today wishing that Microsoft didnt do the development reset and turn longhorn into vista. That's why there are longhorn themes for download

I bought it second hand only two months ago and immediately installed ML on it. when your talking about the "movable taskbar" dont forget that this feature was taken from 3.11 at the time because 3.11 you could move the minimized icons throughout the screen so still another feature is the startbar and the thing at the bottom are clashes of 3.11 and 95

A lot of people may not realise, but that Win3 close button is still in Windows today, even on 10. I'll still use it to double click something off all the time, depends what my mouse is closest too.
On Windows 10 with "classic" win32 software, the button is always there but may not be visible, like on the explorer. There's no icon, no nothing, but still clickable if you know it's there.

  • @tty23

I think I like not having a close button in the corner that you can just readily click on. The arrow key seems to snap to corners sometimes and you can bump the right mouse button and close an important document. Convenience isn't always logical.

you can still close the Win9x Programs/ Windows in Windows 10 on the top left by double click like in WFW311. so this never disappeared. and the arrows in the top Right Corner of a WFW311 Windows were also meant to minimize / maximize, like the new Icons in Win9x suggest, but in an older understanding.

This Chicago build of taskbar is used to store folders and files by default. I think you can change it to Task List (running programs) by right clicking and select Properties. You should find the option. (Or maybe it's in another build?). That's why the program shrinks down. Is there another sophisticated way to access the program? I mean, is the Program folder on the desktop doesn't work? There's two Notepad s because it's 16/32 bit OS.

Btw many youtubers are posting download links of copyright protected stuff (most of it cause of the expiration date)... The agreement with youtube you talk about has every youtuber, me too... but youtube is hazy about this certain policies... and to the point about music and video's (copyrighted content does not affect your channel after a claim)..
