Can't believe how it's actually better then audi s3, well done vw.
Why you cant believe? This is not the first time that Golf is better than S3. Golf R is always better car than S3. In VAG cooperation you have things like touareg, audi and cayenne. The cayenne always have something wich makes him to pops by little. The same is here. Golf is always tuned little bit better to be a better car. Just make comparison in every generation and you will se what im talking about. Every car journalist say this that Golf R is somehow better setup than S3. But we all must say this generation is where golf is pretty much other car. Amazed how much actualy is now better. Cheers
S3 is more of a relaxed cruiser. They held back on the s3 for the rs3

The Golf R is by far the most fun / versatile car I’ve driven! (former 2016 Golf R owner, current 2019 Audi S5). I highly recommend this (any year)!
I have a 2017 civic si and I think in going to trade it for this.
and with 6 speed manual transmission option, only for our North American market! Can't wait!

I have a Golf R 2017. I do like this new one with the torque vectoring wow! 2017 was the last R with analog instrumentation that I like better and I still prefer my dials for climate control and radio tuning etc...plus, I must admit the lights and color scheming look delightful in these new models. Great review as always Thomas!

What a great exhaust, but yet they still pipe the digital engine sound into the cabin. Strange.
In the older gen the soundaktor vibrated the windshield to make noise but in this one not sure. Either way the soundaktor didn't make much of a difference
Yeah, I hate that. WRX does that too but I think you can turn that sh*t off. Hope you can in the R also.

This is probably the most exciting everyday car released in 2020, I will be getting one when it goes on sale in Australia if the Akrapovic exhaust is an option. Looking forward to a better year in 2021!
It needs additional heat extractor vent slits on the front bonnet of the car for better cooling and better drag coefficient because the air being sucked in the front grill is partially released out from the additional heat extractor vent slits on that front bonnet of the car. NACA duct specification.
It needs to decrease weight even more...
Interior wise, use Porsche Recaro inspired design carbon fiber race front seats but with unique thick padding design to the Golf that offers individual bolstering pad patches layout like a torso spider web kind of pattern layout. Integrated individual patches layout that absorbs the weight pressure of the human body. The whole point is to decrease the bulkiness of the front seats anyway, because bulkiness means weight.
Interior wise, you decrease weight on a redesigned interior cabin.
there is an article that says it's coming out in 2022 for Australia for some 3-prong R launch campaign

I like it in terms of performance and styling. I don't like the infotainment & screen set up as well as cost cutting. In the engine bay alone: no R Logo on the engine cover, no gas bonnet lifter, underside of bonnet not sprayed fully.

I really like the fact that you stick it to VW on the gas struts every Golf MK8 video. Such short-sighted penny pinching on part of bean counters at VW.
Nailed this no other real life detailed looks on this car besides photos in the US, Yet
For me this car is from another planet. Me as a Golf R freak i want it to be just like this. If you ask me couple of years how you want it, i would say how great will be to drift with Golf. And VW do it. For as (fans) of this beaty that is like dreams come true. It has absolutly everything. Power, look, and now you can have a lot of fun! Amazed. I want this thing to be forever. Forget the electric, please leave to us something like this! 🥰

I love it. Im nearly completely sold on trading in my 2019 jetta when this comes to Canada in late 2021. However ill miss my engine heater, heated seats, heated wheel, heated whipers and so on.
Has the understeer basically gone now? Also how is the steering feedback/feel compared to cars like civic type r?

Right now I have a 2014 Mitsubishi Evo. And this car could very well be my next car . Like everything I have seen about it so far.
Nice review, although would have preferred to see the MT version, especially since I haven't seen any videos that are not DSG. Agree that the weak point for me, watching these videos, is the infotainment with the touch sliders for volume and temp. Not a deal breaker but disappointing. Love the look as I thought the mk7 was too boring looking. Sounds like the AWD and driving dynamics have been significantly improved with the Nurburgring and drift mode as well.
Manual transmission will be only for US / Canadian market! Yay! So excited! We'll have to wait until it launches here in the states to see the MT review
Can 100% torque be sent to both rear wheels at same time or only one?
In the US, the new Golf R is a 2022 model coming out in October 2021. We did not get a 2021 R.

Great car performance wise...the same old 2.0lt engine but tuned a bit, the Drift mode is a great touch, and also the new brakes.
At 6:45 I guess they dint bother to change the Golf 3D model to a Golf R...
The front end of the new R is the only one so far that looks decent. The base model, the GTI and GTI Clubsport look so "strange".
And again I will complain about the extensive use of Piano Black plastics....the worst dust magnets EVER, so frustrating to clean every 2-3 days.

WRT the cost (50k Euros) in Europe, let's put this in perspective. The Golf R is expensive in all markets -- if for no other reason than it's the top Golf model with 320-hp, 4-wheel drive, DSG, etc. -- but it's particularly expensive in the EU & GB because both markets impose a Value Added Tax (VAT). We don't have a VAT in the U.S. Consequently, in the U.S. the R will almost certainly cost what it cost (within a few hundred dollars) in 2019: $42k for the manual transmission version (which will only be available in the U.S.) and $43k with the DSG transmission. Certainly that's not "cheap," but it's not unreasonable in relation to what other German performance automobiles cost in the U.S. these days.
I definitely like the extra power and the new torque vectoring system. I'm not sold on the looks just yet, but maybe they will grow on me over time. Also, not a fan of the fully digital dashboard and so many buttons on the steering wheel. Too distracting.
It a shame... I actually like it. Amazing that changing the front headlight design ever so slightly makes it look good. The standard Golf 8’s look odd. But what puts me off now, is the price. £39,000 for the base model
Wow 1st with the video. I am getting the new S3. The Golf is expensive. Plus only the 3 colours to choose from. And not a fan of Lapiz blue. Which most people will pick

I wish the Rrrrr had a signature colour like the GTI has red, GTE blue etc. Think they should give it the yellow stripe from the concept R400. I guess the stealth look is part of it's USP but a base Golf with the R-line spec could be mistaken for the R. You could never say that of a GTI (Mk7 GTI owner here haha). There is no denying the performance though!
The signature color for the R is blue. And it is blue since the R32 Golf 4 so way way ahead of any GTE.

@@richardsealey3626 Yes, Lapiz Blue Metallic was launched on 7R and they also kept it for 8R, 6R was sold in Rising Blue Metallic, 5R32 and 4R32 were painted in Deep Blue Pearl.
This car starts at €61,000 in Ireland and with all the boxes ticked, is over €80,000.
Great car, great review but £50,000 with all those options! Ouch! As I have said on my TH-cam channel I feel this is one of the best hot hatches out there......but times are different now and this is no longer a peoples car at that price! In fairness to the R most hot hatches are becoming out of reach for it's intended audience 🥶

@@flintmonz Don't lie to yourself. I really really love the 7.5R, but the 8R is definitely better in every way and it also makes the 7.5R look so dated now.
@@serbanmirica8120 Sure, the 8 has some very nice improvements, but since my 7.5 only has 2,600 miles, I'm still loving it. 10 out of 10, except for the exceptionally crappy Fender sound system. The 8's Harman Kardon is certainly a welcome improvement.
How's the drift mode compared to A45s?
It’s better It can split power individually
I talked to a german „Autozeitung“ tester. He said that the Drift Mode in the Golf is less drifty in the dry. But it feels good at normal sporty driving and can properly drift in the wet.

I don't know what automakers are thinking these day. First fake plastic exhaust now all these flaky capacitive buttons and dials. Did anybody ask for this stuff? I mean non of it is making driving experience better. In fact, its less safe. Much less safe. You have to take your eyes off the road and look down for half of all the adjustments.
