Steve, what a great start on TH-cam. My favorite thing in the world, kayak touring. I’m 63 and the guys at work think I’m crazy doing this especially over the money I have spent on my setup ! Theirs just nothing that can describe the feeling or the sounds, sights and the joyful simplicity of being out their paddling. Absolutely loved this video, thank you for this !

Hi Steve, I really enjoyed your video, now subscribed. I’m just beginning my sea kayaking journey. I’ve been open canoeing for a while but the sea calls! I just joined a club to get some training and experience. One day I’ll do solo trips. I live close to the west coast of Scotland where the kayaking is apparently ‘world class’. Looking forward to watching more!

I do!!! I really want people to have an experience-maybe not the exact same thing I'm experiencing, but as close as I can get them. I love my time on the water, and I'm doing what I can to share that with others. Seems like your a long way from Maine! Thanks for your feedback and for watching.

Hello! Thanks for watching and for subscribing! I appreciate the support and help. Smart move getting some training and experience! You do live in a world-class area for sea kayaking! It's on my list to visit. There are some fantastic coaches in that area as well. What's drawing you to get out onto the ocean?

Nice. Thx for making this channel!
I’m thinking of moving to Maine in 2 years just for the paddling. With that in mind I hope you share your experience on: water access points for kayakers, kayaking community in the Jonesport area, specific gear, weather, currents, paddling differences north and south of Jonesport (from Winter Harbor area to Eastport), island access for rest stops or camping…,etc. thx!
I was surprised you don’t wear a full drysuit - specially when you paddle solo.

    • @SeeSteveSeaKayak
      @SeeSteveSeaKayak  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

What part of Maine do you think you’ll end up in? …the paddling is pretty fantastic out here. So much variety and interesting places.
Thanks for your thoughts and feedback! There will be a lot to unpack in future videos and I hope you keep watching.
Oh, the drysuit. It’s actually a system from NRS. The top and bottom join together to create a “seal”. It’s my favorite piece of kit (after my kayaks) due to its versatility. I wouldn’t use it on trips in the rocks or surfing where their is a high likelihood of swimming, I’m in my one-piece drysuit for that, but for spring through fall paddles out here, it’s great.

I understand. I’m researching now on the best places to relocate in Maine. Checking the boxes for: sea Kayaking, cycling, good coffee shops, affordability, artists,…etc. Thinking a small living space for late spring, summer and early fall - return to Washington DC for winters. Welcome thoughts.
Your video was perfect from my perspective.

Thanks yet again for your endorsement and support! I'm so happy to hear that the episode was something you enjoyed. I'm learning so much as I do more of these and as I'm still trying to refine the vision!
Episode two (January) features an off-the-beaten path location with an amazing island, and Episode 3 (February) is of me seeking some protection from wind and cold outside of Machias, Maine. I hope you tell me what you think of those videos!
Your plan for Maine in the spring to fall sounds great. Bath, Belfast, and Ellsworth all come to mind as affordable, artsy places that will get you close to amazing paddling. Good luck!

I definitely prefer to choose a range. But when I paddle with a group it's sometimes hard to keep the group together if I maintain my range and others do not. Seals don't give a damn if you look at them or not. They're going to flush at a certain distance-at least in Maine! Nice to see something like this on the Maine coast. Maybe someday I can even appear in one with you!

    • @SeeSteveSeaKayak

We'll have to do a Kayakreflections/SeeSteveSeaKayak mash up! And, I agree, following ranges in groups is tough. It requires a lot of communication and everyone being on the same page. And, I KNEW, Jen was full of it! HA!

Hey mate, greetings from Waterford Maine. I'd love to hear your strategy to sharing the waters with lobsterman, maybe you can touch on in a future video. Not sure about the bold coast, but places like Stonington can be spicy when it comes to such things

  • @OkinawaWild

Great first video. Having lived and paddled in the sub-tropics my whole life, PNW was always on my bucket list, but that's been replaced with the Northeast Atlantic.
If I may give a bit of advice (and we all know what that's worth...), Keep videos centered around the adventure, even if it's a day trip like this. I'd love to see a channel with lots of NE coast tripping and camping by sea kayak. There are so many pretentious, know-it-all dickheads in the sea kayaking community, TH-cam, Facebook, etc., are overwhelmed with "this is my gear and you should be doing it like this or you're IN DANGER" fodder... It's a quick turn off for A LOT of people who just want to see the adventure.
Do your thing, but you don't have to explain everything you're doing, or why you're doing it. Wait for people to ask about it. Then in another video, you can address it. Plus it gives ideas for future content. Example: When you got in the boat, you dipped the splits to make the paddle go together easy. Someone may ask about that, just seeing you do it. Last, don't worry about all the complainers who will try to tear you down about safety stuff. There's no need to explain paddling alone or putting the helmet on for landing to appease these idiots. Like I suggested above, wait until it's asked about and then maybe address it in a future video.
Anyway...my ¥2. Thanks for the cool video.

    • @SeeSteveSeaKayak

Thanks for the supportive feedback and observations. I’m trying to walk the line between telling a compelling story and taking people on an adventure (and not be a know-it-all gear head) while making something fun. You raise great points of not needing to explain everything and letting it come up organically. Hope you make it up here to the N. Atlantic or out to the PNW sometime! Thanks for watching, thanks for taking your time to help fine-tune this project.
