The Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas angelicum.it (Pontificia Università S. Tommaso d'Aquino in Urbe angelicum.it/it), popularly known as “the ANGELICUM” is an international Dominican center of learning in the historic center of Rome. The university has faculties of Theology, Philosophy, Canon Law, and Social Sciences, along with a Higher Institute of Religious Sciences, Mater Ecclesiae. The foundation of the Angelicum goes back to the XIII century (1265) medieval Dominican house of studies in Rome (at Santa Sabina), where St. Thomas Aquinas taught friars in formation towards the priesthood. Among the Angelicum’s distinguished alumni are fr. Karol Józef Wojtyła (Pope St. John Paul II), the Ven. Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, fr. Servais-Théodore Pinckaers OP, fr. Réginald Marie Garrigou-Lagrange OP, and fr. Wojciech Giertych OP (currently teaching). The same class rooms where they studied are still in daily use by our 1,200 professors and students coming from over 90 countries. The university offers education in Italian and English.
The university is run by the Dominicans (Order of Preachers) whose headquarters are also in Rome. While many students are preparing for ordination to the priesthood or for a ministry in the Church, there is a rapidly growing number of lay students. All carry a commitment of dedication and service to Jesus Christ to engage the culture using the wisdom of the “doctor communis,” Saint Thomas Aquinas.
Today the Angelicum remains committed to preserving the heritage of St. Thomas Aquinas as a vital force in theological and philosophical scholarship and in the teaching of classical Roman Catholic Theology. In Fall 2018, the university reorganized the Angelicum’s Thomistic Institute (angelicum.it/t...) in order to promote the study of St. Thomas at the heart of the Church. This new institute fosters theological research and engagement with other philosophical and theological traditions, as well as contemporary sciences. In Fall 2019, the university opened the Institute for Ecumenical Studies (angelicum.it/i...) under the patronage of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. It is the only academic institution in the Rome offering a complete university education in ecumenism. In Spring 2020 the university founded the Saint John Paul II Institute of Culture (angelicum.it/i...) - a new institute and academic chair within the Faculty of Philosophy. The launch on 18 May 2020 coincided with the historic centenary of the birth of the Angelicum’s most distinguished alumnus, Pope St. John Paul II.
The Angelicum is not only a place of study; it is where students meet God, in the classroom and outside of it. Ours is the only pontifical university in the Eternal City which offers all-day Eucharistic adoration for our 1,000+ students, 200+ faculty members, and 75 friars in an historic chapel within our university cloister - a practice that has continued uninterrupted since 2002.
