    With a locomotive model like that, 3rd Rail could be a great competitor for Lionel and MTH. We could expect some amazing Legacy and Vision Line Locomotives and Cars after this.

    The outside of the wheels looks like something in HO scale. I like those wheels. But, they did look like traditional O-scale wheels when you tilted the engine to the side. They are coated in what looks like nickel-silver or stainless steel. This locomotive looks like the most detailed one you ever reviewed. I like both the engine and the video 😁👍👏👏👏👏👏👏

    An excellent video Eric. I had wondered when you were going to take the 3rd Rail plunge. They certainly are exquisite models and every one is as accurate as it can be. I have a handful of 3rd Rail steam engines as well as a Budd RDC. They are the only company that offers a full scale model of the RDC in O scale. It would be nice in my opinion if they could offer a choice between Lionel and MTH sound effects but I don't think that will ever happen. Nice review I think that a MTH layouts using DCS can operate TMCC also. So as long as one has the min 72 curves the 3 rail units will operate with DCS using the TMCC section of the DCS command control system along with the Lionel systems

    • @Ericstrains
      @Ericstrains  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Sawyer you can run tmcc engines with dcs, but you still need the tmcc/legacy command base and the connector cable to connect the DCS TIU to the tmcc/legacy system. It’s not a money saving thing, it’s a convenience thing.

    Eric, great review as always, and great engine! I wanted to ask a question. Will the drive belt in this set ever break or wear out and need to be replaced? I was wondering if, being plastic, it would always last. I love this set though, and I want one! I hope they give you extra drive belts or can they be ordered

    • @Ericstrains
      @Ericstrains  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've been told that they basically last forever. They're made of polyurethane and are designed to never have to be replaced.

    • @GinoACosta
      @GinoACosta 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Ericstrains Eric, not to be judgemental, but for a $2k engine set, they better. But consider that all the weight / force required to pull those many cars are directly felt by each drive belt. If I were designing the drive system, and had to use similar belts, I would have 1) used two of them per engine, with the motor axle coming out both sides of the motor, with one belt on each side, and 2) I would widen them to twice the width they are now. For such an expensive engine set, there's no harm in a bit of over-designing, even if it turns out to be overkill. I do like the design, especially since it's designed to never need servicing, so long as no dirt gets inside the drive belt assembly - and if it did, it could be cleaned anyway. Still, I SO VERY MUCH want that set, I just need enough room for 72" curves

    Another fascinating video, great job Eric. But for what I'm pretty sure is the first time ever, I'm going to have to correct you on one small thing in this video. The 9 volt battery does have purpose in command control mode, it serves as a keep-alive over dead track sections (only over 2 or 3 inches of dead track max).

    • @Ericstrains
      @Ericstrains  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      William F yeah I’m not sure I agree with you on that. 9 volts is not enough power to keep the engine moving over dead track. It’s only enough to keep the sound system going during brief power interruptions. Thanks though!
