2 beekeepers are in a bar. One asks, "what would it be like playing Russian roulette with an eight cylinder pistol instead of a six"? The second thinks a minute and replies, like using Apivar at 50 days"?
I was out getting some honey frames today and suddenly realized that the two colonies I have are enough. It's a lot of work. Immediately I thought of your yards and had increased respect for the amount of work you do. I know it's a group but man, ALOT of work.
Every year is always different - keeps us on our toes! Figuring it out as it happens and continue looking at the forecast ahead. Here in south central PA looks to be dry through the end of August which unfortunately is the beginning of aster and goldenrod bloom - some rain would be nice been too hot and dry this year.
Fall is right around the corner, with the way my bees are behaving I'm wondering if it might be a shorter Fall this year. Sometimes congestion can get the work done, it seems to focus that work force well. Blessed Days Ian and Crew...
All the early ditch mows are giving sweet clover, some dandelions and alfalfa. Golden rod is starting on its second - late variety blossom so lots of fuzzy bee legs and fat bees coming back .
Those crown boards with a hole people use, or just a piece of plastic with a 3/4 hole in the back put on the excluder between boxes makes them bring the honey down in the nest.. clean the top box. Is alpha-alpha good for winter food ? Or the mix of flow you have at the moment. Could it be used instead of syrups ? Or it all gets hard
I really wish we did not have to treat the bees. they are bringing in a ton of goldenrod, but we have to get the supers off in order to have time to treat with apigaurd and feed for the winter. What a conundrum. Do you have much golden rod up there?
consider a treatment with hopps guard 3 when you pull the first time . in the states you can use hopps guard with honey supers on. it is not perfect but give a knock down before the bees that will raise the winter bees are laid
Ian do you see that robbing kick up if you work brood of an evening? I have wondered about doing my Fall inspections and Brood Work more of an evening near sun down to help cut down on issues. With you years of experience I figure you have worked bees of in the evening plenty of times, does it help any?
I allwais feel that the bees from supers are a waist to be left on the mother colony after the last honey pull with them and some protein and sirup you can gain 4 to7 frames (a nuc) like you did last year.
He already did one round of that - filled all the empty hardware - brood box's he had available and dropped new queens in them. Also he's running full speed into his staff leaving for school so some jobs/projects just can't be done in the time he has available. I'm sure if he could do it again he would since a $40.00 queen is more economic than a $300.00 package. Quadruple Crunch Time on the farm: Honey Harvest - Apiary Winter prep - Grain Harvest - Beef Cattle feed and bedding work. He (his family) help with other areas on the farm that he doesn't post about.
Ian...You said the "treatments will come off mid-October" - it sounds like you are using Apivar-6 weeks strips? I remember last year.. that didn't work good for you... (no decreased mite loads) 🙂I'm just curious Why are you using them again this year?
Today mine are plugging with pollen Theres a nectar flow . I still have room because they are 2 high hives . If you get alfalfa honey thats a bonus its a premium honey 🍯!!!

Hello, from Greek beekeeping!
Olá bom dia sou seu fã aqui no Brasil 🐝🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
I enjoy your vocalized thought processes.
I see dandelions and sweet clover popping up here now in Northern Alberta.

How about putting a box of foundation on. If the flow is mild they'll plug the spaces available. If it's strong they'll draw and fill the foundation?
Hola que lindas reinas más miel 🐝🐝🐝😎😎😀😀💪que rico ☕☕😃
Are you still able to treat your bees with antibiotics (OTC)?
Welcome! can you tell me what is the role of that aluminum foil on top??

Ian, What is your recommendation for mowing weeds and grass around the bees hives? Is a certain time of the day better than another?

6:45 - that truck is screaming for water. .
LOL all it knows is dirt and dust
Hello Ian, whats the reason why they would not swarm with so many bees in a single box?
Because it’s too close to winter and the new colony would not survive.
How did the head gasket job go with the old dura max is it running good again , how many miles?
The good news is she’s working like a tank again

Now , it will not be a day time manipulation
