You’re not taking one thing into consideration: Inflation. A $40,000 collection in 2020, adjusted for inflation should be worth $50,000 in 2024 if the price of each card stayed the same. If you’re saving it’s worth $42,000 now, then you lost $8,000 by holding it for 4 years because of inflation alone. This is why it drives me nuts when people talk about cards as investments as you have to factor inflation. Holding cards and them not growing with the rate of inflation is like keeping your $$$ in a savings account and getting 1% interest every month. Collect for fun and because 99% of cards are not stocks.
It’s amazing how much depth there was to the pandemic highs . I can accept the fact hobby GOATS were going for all time highs , but a Tim Duncan rookie that’s now a $30 card and probably a $20-$25 before the pandemic went for $550???? It’s like people were purposely just burning money .
Dude it was a great time for selling. Unfortunately flippers ruined modern grading values, but I think a lot of people wisened up because of it. Others are still asking those prices on ebay and it's hilarious. But it's funny how so many people are saying the market is dead, when if you take covid prices out of the equation....we are at a healthier time than ever. Covid prices were an anomaly. Someday we'll get a spike again, but people just need to move on from that.
Glad you showed this , most people dont take this into consideration when buying card collections and or cards in general. Timing is everything in this industry / market , no different than the stock market. People need to start looking at cards more like stock investments and spend more time following the data, so they dont get cooked. Iv had to learn the hard way ,similar to this collection with cards going way down in value when i could have sold at peaks if I wasnt distracted with other things or card inventory. Im downsizing and moving to the turn and burn / holds for 1 season or less strategy's on all cards other than special goat cards. Gunna turn and burn modern and focus on stashing some profits aside slowly saving to buy into a big rare goat card to hold long term and start building a portfoilio of rare heavy hitters vs just having thousands of modern / cards in general. Id cash out some profits on a few of those heavy hitters you got and buy into some other good stuff for potential gains to off set some of the losses and just hold the trouts / lebrons and what not for when they retire and get a bump.
Difference is stocks have millions (shares) of volume per day, whereas even the most popular and common cards have maybe a dozens a week. Plenty of room for error and “signal noise” when trying to sift through that kind of shallow market.
I don't have a big collection, but I think I legit bought some Topps rookie lebrons graded 9's at the very peak lol. I fell for the hype at the time. Never again..
I think even though the market is way down from 2020, it is still relatively up overall compared to years prior and I think that they could continue to go down but I think this collection has a good variety of all time greats in sports and could be a good collection to keep holding on to.
Proves that ROOKIES are allways a risk, most of us don't spend much on rookies. May keep them, but focus on established cards and Autographs, jersey, short print, cards that will hold value, or hold value due to rarity or player going into the hall of fame or passing..
Like the concept of this video. Could be a whole series. Don't know if they'll ever rebound, but always wanted a few of these cards in the collection. At current prices, I wouldn't feel bad about adding a few to the PC.
Could be possible it's a typo on their end or maybe an engagement bait where people type a comment about saying that value is spelled incorrectly. One of the two, most times, it's the former.
I would sell many of the modern cards, maybe the Jackie Robinson and another vintage card and buy more vintage stars in decent grades. Either way, good luck and good video.
I understand you just wanted to show the comps on these cards from when you bought this collection, and overall I like the video, but I think you could also add that many of these cards are still way up overall from 10-15 years ago (many of them are older than 10 years). If we zoom out a bit and go back further you will realize we are still way up right now from where we were. I know that goes away from the point of the video but I also think it should be noted somewhere. I'm pretty positive LeBron PSA 9 Chromes were selling for like $75-100 back then. I bought a true Gem 9.5 for $175 in 2016. Despite the massive cliff that we fell off of since 2021, we are still miles ahead of where we were 8-10 years ago.
Super interesting video. I think it shows that vintage - pre 1980s - baseball is the best investment. Shocking the drops on the basketball cards - especially LeBron and the drop on the Bradys and Trouts but I guess that is the problem with modern as they are so mass produced there is no scarcity in the market so the value is only really in SSPs and Numbered but even then there are so many sets! My big prediction is within two years outside of the 1/1s with interesting patches all of the unlicensed Topps Wemby cards will be pretty worthless!
Absolutely Insane isn't it, a 40k investment and you not tracking the market trends, how many collectors has he influenced to keep theirs cards and not sale? Ouch.. I guess it would be bad for business if he did..
Awesome video. You should do these kind of videos more often. Easy for me to say, but not easy tying up 40k to hold without trying to recoup it. Me personally I’m having a hard time holding $50 cards lol
This is awesome content Ryan. I think you should do this every year with this collection. See if lebrons stuff goes up over time like the vintage HOF slabs have over time. Would be interesting to see if this collection goes up in 5, 10, 20 years.
I bought a MJ Rookie BGS8.5 for $4400aud in 2019 then C-vid and The Last Dance happened. Pumped up to be worth $30000aud as per solds on Ebay. I eventually sold it for $15000aud as the hype died off.
Love this video. 40 some minutes flew buy. Very informative. Thank you for all that. 1. Vintage is where it’s at. Vintage wax even better! 2. Time to buy trout and lebron????
You should do a video on the biggest L's you purchased during the peak market. 2021-22 ish. My biggest L was buying a 2007 Topps Chrome Orange Refractor Kevin Durant BGS 9 (9++ subs) for $18k. Most recent comps put this card around $4k now. My biggest win was buying a 1999 Sealed Base Set Pokémon Booster Box Green Wing for $4.5k early 2020 and selling it for $32.5k 10 months later.
I would sell what you can out of the collection. You are in the business of buying and selling not buying and keeping. So if you can sell something and recover what you spent then you should. Some of these players you might do well to hold them until they go into the Hall of Fame. You might get a spike with them being in the news. I think if Trout is traded to someone like a world series contender it might recover some of his value. I think he won't change if he continues to play for the Angels.
Thank you for the detailed video. Purchasing cards should be a fun and enjoyable experience. If you approach card buying solely as a means to make a profit, you may find yourself disappointed if you incur losses. Have fun in life buying cards and if you are lucky and make money..... Way to Go! Thank you for an amazing video and keep doing great content!
😢 Could it be because all of you stupid TH-cam card influencers constantly push the rookies for your breaks and sales like they are the next goat and they fizzle out in a year or two. Anyone before Covid struck knew you don’t “invest” in a rookie until they are proven. Look at Kenny Pickett, Justin Fields, Mac Jones, Trey Lance, Kyler Murray, Tyler Hero, Zion Williamson, heck I saw Davis Mils being pushed, Bol Bol, now we are pushing Wemby and CJ stroud. I can go on but you should get the point by now. Stop listening to the TH-camrs and the breakers and maybe this hobby will correct back to how it was before Covid. You “invest” in proven Goats: Jordan, Kobe, Lebron, Brady, Manning…. I don’t think I need to say much more….
I would wait another 5 years to see if your total value goes up or down. If there's one thing to learn from this video is that you have to learn to sell when the card is hot! I unloaded my Richardson's just befor season started . somtimes you gotta take your shot😂 and boy am i greatful that I did , his cards have dropped alot since August. 😮 thanks for sharing this video ryan.
Hold on to them for 30 years and value should be about the same as I found out with my collection except my 62 Mantle, that thing shot up like a light pole for some reason.
How'd all the F1 & soccer you were buying turn out? I remember watching those purchases and thinking those were gonna drop like rocks once the new wears off
And the fees of liquidating these cards if you want to sell them bc most people can’t sell direct. You could have bought an index funds and been way more ahead
Good video. Hopefully, it was not your intent to create buzz for vintage. That market may be peaking right now. If no one has coined the phrase, let me be the first: the junk chrome era. With lower case c, it includes Prizm as well. All market peaks are driven by and include "fungible" items. You can't tell one from the other and supply ultimately out strips demand. Generally speaking and i am speculating wildly, stay with cards that have a print run of 500 or less. Otoh, we could be one industry mistake away from everything plummeting in value. Would like to see you do a discussion on population growth of junk chrome. And then see how prices for serial numbered cards have fared from those same date points.
It's hard to say what to do. I'd hold onto that modern trash. At the moment most are worth just above the grading fee. Granted of all modern trash you have the least desirable, base that's not gem mint. With the vintage It's hard to say. Low grade vintage has had a nice ride over the last 5 years, but the question is what will happen to the size of the collector base. Given there is a low supply of vintage rookies collector settle for low grade cards. If the total collector base decreases those looking at a psa 2 Berra might start looking for a 4. If the collector base grows or stays the same you might see it go up as its the type of card collectors hold.
Cards that are overpriced will eventually adjust or something else with more demand will come out. Right now, everyone chasing downtowns and kabooms! Good vintage will always be in demand. I sold a ton of stuff in 2021 and 2022 because I knew the market could not get any hotter! Degrom rookies were going for $500 and look at them now.
I think my question is: why did you buy the collection in the first place? as a personal collection to hold long term? or did you plan on flipping it eventually for profit? Cant understand how you could keep 40K ih inventory for 4 + years. As a card dealer/shop owner, wouldnt the plan to be to sell to maximize profit??
I believe Lebron's right now are a good buy, and a hold until his retirement. The market is down and higher pop stuff still seems to be sinking a little, if you can find lower pop stuff on the cheap I think it's a strong buy. The Lakers look good so far this year with AD playing like a legit MVP candidate which means there could be some playoff hype upside. Where I think the best window would and could be is if at the end of this season, he announces next season will be his last. Which would create a farewell tour season. If Lebron abruptly retires at a seasons end I see that as potential risk. So in my eyes good selling windows would be Lakers playoffs this season potentially, and a potential farewell tour season as each game will become absolutely box office events. Lower pop stuff could have a ton of upside during these potential windows.

Well I would PC the lower end cards and sell the others. It is so crazy how fast card values drop.

Cliff notes: vintage wins.
I’ve been heavy in Ohtani. One of my best investments ever.
Best time to buy some Topps Chrome psa 9’s ! I’m 32, and Duncan, Carter, Tmac, Vince, Kobe are my idols
Moral of story is people dont want anything lower then 10s on newer cards. Psa 9s are.for the PC now.
Great Video. Great Insight. However, there’s no way someone can’t watch this video and see how the word “VALUE” is constantly misspelled on screen.
Could be possible it's a typo on their end or maybe an engagement bait where people type a comment about saying that value is spelled incorrectly. One of the two, most times, it's the former.
Psa 10 or bust with modern imo. Vintage always holds value
That Deshaun Watson comp was absolutely insane.
I would sell many of the modern cards, maybe the Jackie Robinson and another vintage card and buy more vintage stars in decent grades.
Either way, good luck and good video.
Vintage is king, it stands the test of time.

I'd pay anything to listen to old school card talk after that jets rant, miss Tyler and Lou just isn't the same
Odd how everything that is 80-90% down since 2021 you can find videos on those exact cards on influences pushing those identical cards heh
Almost like 2021 was filled with “investors” and not actually collectors
I would hold on to the cards that are down but feature all-time great players. I'm thinking of using a few of these losses as ideas for cards to buy.
Another banger upload cc2! Loving the channel.
Thanks for the video and advice. Definitely learned a thing or 2.

Topps Chrome is hated by collectors.
It’s tough, my cards have taken huge hits to, I have given up on modern cards long term

And the fees of liquidating these cards if you want to sell them bc most people can’t sell direct. You could have bought an index funds and been way more ahead
$5 won't even get you a palm massage. At least your friend sold it before it may have gotten smashed by a hurricane.
Don’t give up on Trout. 2011 print runs are super low compared to other years….
Proof Jordan is the true GOAT 😊
Good video. Hopefully, it was not your intent to create buzz for vintage. That market may be peaking right now. If no one has coined the phrase, let me be the first: the junk chrome era. Football and basketball cards ended up very much a scam
Morale of the story…..don’t buy bulk unless you have a TH-cam channel
fantastic video.
Vintage cards were less produced in the day and less preserved. It’s all about supply and demand, economics 101. That's why Vintage does better 🤷♀️
Buy high. Sell low. Thats my sports card strategy
What a great video idea!
Its insane how much some of these cards of dropped in value. Most of them are all legends of the game(TB12, MJ, Lebron, Kobe.....etc).
What’s the move for Brady now?
I’ve been picking up some of his rookies. Long term hold
Awesome video!
Until you find a buyer and have cash in hand or in your bank account, it’s all worth what someone is willing to pay whether it be vintage or modern.
Moral of the story is the wind to buy the wind to sell
I may have missed it, but why did you hold every single card this entire time? I would love to know. Thanks
Cash Out what went up, hold on to rest, some will go back up like Bron, then dump rest of them in trades!!
Keep the collection for another 2 years!
So why didn’t you sell all of those? Don’t you run a retail shop?
Cards that are overpriced will eventually adjust or something else with more demand will come out. Right now, everyone chasing downtowns and kabooms! Good vintage will always be in demand. I sold a ton of stuff in 2021 and 2022 because I knew the market could not get any hotter! Degrom rookies were going for $500 and look at them now.
Keep the vintage and sell the rest... People are starting to realize cards that use to be in the dollar bin are not worth hundreds of dollars...
Sad to say but sell the Trouts now. Bron will bounce back and the Wade, Dirk, Duncan seem underpriced. No reason not to hold them too.
Sell the vintage now an hold the new stuff get back about 20 grand on like 9 cards hold the rest

Gotta show the prices in 2018 my dude
Gotta learn when to sell
