I'm going against the grain here, but some things in Starcrash that I DO find pretty cool and that I LIKE .. . The weird and original DESIGNS of some of the space crafts, especially the CLAW-shaped ship of the villains. The multi-colored stars. The ice planet (which, interestingly, even prefigures “Hoth” in Empire Strikes Back, as this reviewer himself had already duly noted). The monster mask that fires lasers out of its eyes. The touching friendship between the robot character “El” and Stella (particularly in the scene where he suspends her temperature to save her life). Marjo Gortner as “Acton”. Sure, he overacts grossly, but he does bring a ridiculously quirky charm to the character, and I always thought he had a really cool looking FACE too. Robert Tessier as “Thor”” (the real creepy looking bald guy). The actual volcano used as a location for the “third launch”. The very comely and scantily clad Ms. Munro and Nadia Cassini (the “Amazon Queen”), both of whom contribute an aesthetic of feminine beauty. So, yeah, I do like Starcrash just a little bit. So you all can HANG me!
I'd have taken the job! It was one day's work, $10,000, and a free trip to Rome. Knowing how cheap Luigi Cozzi is, I assume they recorded his dialogue live on set rather than paying to have him come back and dub them over. I bring that up because the reason Carolyn Munro has this flat American accent is that she was overdubbed by Candy Clark, who was in Rome with her then-husband Marjoe Gortner and David Hasselhoff, kicking around and picking up acting gigs where they needed an American who was a bit of a name.
The scene where she was running from the giant statue that was a copy of the beach scene in Jason and The Argonaughts with Talos chasing Jason, was actually filmed on the same beach
I thought that mountain in the background looked familiar. I just couldn't tell if they actually used the same location... or BLUE-SCREENED in the same background!
My friend Mark and I saw Star Crash live in the theater on its opening weekend... The theater was packed... everyone watched in awe wondering WTF they had walked into... anyway we were in the 2nd row with our feet upon the first as teens often do... watching the movie... there was a really loud part with lots of space combat of no redeeming value going on and Mark leans over and says something... I say What... he repeats again... and I scream WHAT... and right then it switches to a completely silent interior shot and mark yells at the top of his lungs... ITS NOTHING LIKE STAR WARS... and the entire theater was on their feet clapping... it was the best scene by far. Although Tim Tomerson as the robot saying 'you can't keep a good robot down' wasn't a bad scene... and its lucky I never connected that the Hoff got his start in this movie or I many have skipped Knight Rider.

The idea that our distant future really might contain a perspiring Caroline-Munro lookalike in a leather bikini ignites a small kernel of hope for humanity in my heart.
In an interview, Christopher Plummer was asked about "Starcrash." He laughed it off and basically said that he did it because it was filmed in Rome, and said that "I would do a porno if it was in Rome." He also said something to the effect that Caroline Munro was easy on the eyes.
+Dspeir I'm sure that sounded a lot funnier in your head. And it's "altar" meaning a flat top used as the focus for a religious ritual especially for making sacrifices or offerings to a deity. Alter on the other hand means to change something.
+Dspeir Funny how you focused on that instead of what I said earlier. Means one of two things. Either you agree with it or you never really had a point to make. I'm betting on the latter.
19:05 ...oh, Christopher Plummer really enjoyed this role, I can tell. "...so you're sending me to Rome to spend a few days playing The Emperor of the Galaxy for some italian scifi? Sure, I could use a vacation."
At 19:04, this is the funniest line moment for the movie for me. The music is trying to sound heroic and epic. This guy in this hilarious, but pretty awesome costume, delivers this Deus ex Machina line while posing as if he's the most powerful person. There's just something really hilarious about that whole part. Also this person looks like Doctor Fate from Injustice 2, even without the helmet in my opinion. He even talks about time magic.
Odd bit of trivia: this movie won an Academy Award. Sort of. John Barry wrote the title theme for Starcrash. If it sounds familiar, he later used >the same tune> for the title theme of "Out Of Africa," which received an Academy Award for best original score.
I was raised in England in the 1970s and 1980s. Every other week, a travelling video rental salesman came to our house and my mom rented a copy of Starcrash for me. There was something about the colors of the stars in the space scenes and that amazing soundtrack that utterly transfixed me when I was a young child.
The guy playing Acton is named Marjoe Gortner; he became an ordained minister at the age of 4, became discontented by the age of 16, lived in San Fransisco for a while in the 60s, and was the subject of an Oscar winning documentary about him returning to the Pentecostal movement and exposing the corruption of its leaders when he was in his late 20s. Thats where the clip he shows at 10:30 comes from. I had no idea he was also an actor in B-Movies. Hollywood really needs to make a biopic about this guy, the more I learn about him the more fascinated I am.
The perfect B movie for when you're baked and want to giggle like an idiot. I will never forget Caroline Munroe, and Joe Spinelli yelling "KILL! KILL! KILL!" 😂🤣

Booooyyy.... I saw this as a kid, I remember! Oddly the SW similarity never struck me. I only recall how much I liked the robot and how sad I was to see him destroyed by the cavemen. He had an odd design - considering the black color and helmet shape, you'd think he was a bad guy. And yeah, Caroline Munroe... need I say more?
I do love how in this movie the character Caroline Munro plays changes outfit seven time with no explanation nor reasoning behind it and well "Imperial Battle Ship! Halt, the flow of TIME!"
By the same logic, Star Trek characters pretty much have their uniforms on 99% of the time, and smell would therefore be an issue. Sometimes you just have to accept it as "time" passed behind the scenes. Movies will always show you the most important moments, not necessary what is happening all the time. Smaller, less important things can be happening off-screen as long as it has no bearing on the story that is being told. :)
When I was a little kid, the theater had a big cardboard star covered in tin foil, with a doorway cut into its center for you to walk through! This was a part of the promotion for Starcrash, which I got to go see. The only thing I remembered from the film was the weird red orbs driving everyone mad at the start. I probably fell asleep or something.
I liked the part in "The spy who loved me" where both Barbara Bach and Caroline Munro are eyeing each other up in the speedboat. And Roger Moore is busy eyeing both of the up in the same scene.
@@DavidTSmith-jn5bs I think that fantastic quote was just before he and anya got into the speedboat. After spotting Miss Munro in a bikini - i think. I had forgotten about that quote, thank for reminding me.
Two things. The new mystery science theater 3000 did this one recently. And it was pretty good too. Second, Carolyn Munroe is to Brandon Tenold as is Catherine Zeta-jones is to Nostalgia Critic.
Woah!! The bit at 3:47, in the elevator, uses background audio ripped straight from the Gumby where he goes to the moon! Like, the surreal one! It’s identical!
I saw this in 84, 12 years old.. I LOVED IT.. Today it's psyco, but not 4 kids then.... U know, kids before had more fun listening to Radio, than kids today have with a movie......
Haha, I saw this movie in the theater when it was released in 1979. I just streamed it again a few months ago. The movie is awful, but it was fun to watch.
Been binge watching your channel man, think this is my favorite so far. I keep seeing Starcrash pop up on Netflix and always mean to watch it, but honestly, I think watching your riff was way better than it would have been. Keep it up! Also, genuinely surprised you haven't done Doc Savage, would love to see that!
Yeah Caroline Munro makes me wish someone invented movie cloning. You know the one where the the clone really is an exact physical doppelgänger of the original unlike a real clone would be.
I had the joy of watching this movie around 16 years of age with my best friend. This movie was so bad it was good! I laughed so hard for so long I got a headache!
Hmf, I got this movie confused with *Star Slammer* (from '86-ish) - I was like: "I don't remember *any* of this stuff in this movie! ...WTF??" .....A whole 5 mins later, my brain finally catches up 😳 😅
Brandon, I saw this crapfest in the movie theater as a teen (yes, I'm an older nerd, proud of it), and I remember even then thinking it was the worst thing I'd ever seen. What made me laugh the hardest were the starfields the ships would fly through; they looked like Christmas lights stuck into a plywood board painted black. 👾😄
I'm going against the grain here, but some things in Starcrash that I DO find pretty cool and that I LIKE .. . The weird and original DESIGNS of some of the space crafts, especially the CLAW-shaped ship of the villains. The multi-colored stars (which this comenter above here^ has castigated). This movie is actually a lot of fun to watch. I'll be interested to see your Starcrash 2 review, I didn't even know that there was a Starcrash 2! Thanks for posting.
the guy who played Akton has had an interesting life, a glance at his wikipedia page just makes me want to check out his documentary. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marjoe_Gortner

Oh, hey, now STAR WARS had a "Death Star" type of superweapon that wasn't just the size of a planet, but was one: Starkiller Base. Formerly, the planet Ilum.

You know I'm glad the star wars series used minimal effects to show the Force doing things. It really makes it appear more mystical and "real" than whatever this movie is attempting. Also, its always interesting to see a sci fi setting where the Emperor/Empress is not the main villain or even a bad person. Also Also, I'm almost certain the Floating City is just some computer parts glued together.
My sister's been taking care of me after surgery, and we've been marathoning your reviews - she's addicted! Mua-ha-ha-haaaa! Next, my brother! Then...the WORLD!
I met Caroline Minro at a table at Cinema Wasteland a few years ago. I told her my dad and I wstched her in James Bond and Hammer movies when I was growing up. Got her autographs on a couple magazines. Nice lady!
I just read a book that sort of had this exact same plot. Sexy star pilot sent to a prison colony. Governor's son to be rescued from evil aliens. The only difference was the book was great! The Adventures of Crazy Liddy. I wonder if the author ever saw Star Crash?
I'm surprised that you've never covered "Starship Invasions," a really bad Canadian movie from 1977 with Christopher Lee and Robert Vaughn. I haven't seen it since its theatrical release - yes, I paid to see it when it came out, but still remember how awful it was. Ed Wood films had better special effects.
I dunno... maybe I was the right age for this, as I thought some of the FX were pretty clever (I liked how they worked the forced perspective in camera). And I dig the telepathic hookers (😉), the save by Nermal, Chris Lee’s acting when he realizes his planet is dead and the groovy music. I have a soft spot for this film. Yes, I’ve had a doctor look at it, but there’s nothing he can do.
It's always the better when the so much fun part is unintentional.. Liigi cozzi what a ham director... Lol his writing is terrible. His direction ludicrous, his attentions to detail.... Absent
I actually saw this film between SW & ESB, and being so young at the time I didn't twig that obvious "rip-offs" (though I like to call them nods 😉). To this day, I actually love this movie... Of course, Caroline Munro is a HUGE factor in that (one of my first lesbian crushes) ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Concerning this big "rip off" allegation. Why don't we be FAIR about this and cite some of the things that beloved big-britched high and mighty Star Wars did some pinching of it's OWN from, aye? Like namely from Dark Fortress, Arthurian mythology, Dune, the paintings of Ron Cobb, and Vaughn Bode's Cobalt 60?
"Why is it even in Si-fi the woman still has to be the damsel in destress even if shes the hero" .... Lieutenant First Class Ellen Louise Ripley: "hold my coat"
Man, I'm almost embarrassed to say I saw this in the theater when it came out... back when you could catch a double feature for $3.50. I was just a kid then, so what did I know...
This is on free TH-cam movies! I watched it last week when I couldn't sleep and it's actually really good. I didn't feel the need to fast forward through any of it, which is more than I can say of the new Godzilla anime
45 years old now So damn funny this the first Star Wars ripoff Christopher Plummer and David Hasselhoff teamed up at last 😅 But let’s face it; the true reason to watch this is Caroline Monroe ❤❤❤
I was twelve when I saw this in the theatre hoping for another Star Wars experience. All I got was Caroline Munro...worth every single penny! 😍
That much boob at 12?! You're lucky. All I got movie-wise was Titanic when I was 14. 😂

There's nothing new under the sun
Same here, but mine was from Flash Gordon and watching Ornella Mutti and Melodie Anderson in an epic pillow fight.
Christopher Plummer admitted himself that the reason he was in this movie was because the production company offered him a free trip to Rome. lol
Cory yeh may Christopher Plummer reeat in peace from 1929 to 2021 he was la ving legemd afterall
😂 that's great. And I'm sure he had a good while to go sightseeing since he shot all his scenes in only 3 fucking days. Lol
He could still hang out for days afterward; he probably got open ended return ticket.

So you all can HANG me!
we all know black vinyl bikinis are standard equipment for exploring other planets
Carolyn Munroe has sold more rum and cigars than any women alive! And yes, her voice is way deeper (and sexier).
It’s a shame her sultry voice in the 007 flick was not her’s. 😖😒
Swift Nimblefoot Yeah, I think Elle is cool. And Caroline is, of course, shapely.
This has to be one of Brandon's best movie reviews... Hilarious.. Inspired... Great great stuff. Thankyou
😎
I do love how in this movie the character Caroline Munro plays changes outfit seven time with no explanation nor reasoning behind it and well "Imperial Battle Ship! Halt, the flow of TIME!"
By the same logic, Star Trek characters pretty much have their uniforms on 99% of the time, and smell would therefore be an issue. Sometimes you just have to accept it as "time" passed behind the scenes. Movies will always show you the most important moments, not necessary what is happening all the time. Smaller, less important things can be happening off-screen as long as it has no bearing on the story that is being told. :)
That opening crawl was epic. Well done!
“Making it up as you go along” seems to be the Lucasfilm SOP nowadays.
Yup..
So the people who made the sequel trilogy probably watch this movie for reference.
@@year111 That totally explains the Holdo maneuver...
Wish there was tons of Caroline out there..is is amazingly stunning
When I was a little kid, the theater had a big cardboard star covered in tin foil, with a doorway cut into its center for you to walk through! This was a part of the promotion for Starcrash, which I got to go see. The only thing I remembered from the film was the weird red orbs driving everyone mad at the start. I probably fell asleep or something.
Caroline Munro, hot 70’S woman! 👍
Imagine how funny it'd be if Lucas had given Luke Skywalker hair like Acton's.
Caroline Munro
The best part of Spy Who Loved Me
And Barbara Bach.
@@colingrossbier1798 😊
I liked the part in "The spy who loved me" where both Barbara Bach and Caroline Munro are eyeing each other up in the speedboat. And Roger Moore is busy eyeing both of the up in the same scene.
@@pfarquharson1 While he commented "What a handsome craft. Lovely lines." Classic movie!
Caroline Monroe was stunning! Met her a few years ago and she's ace!
your battle with the guards was magnificent!!
best Bruce Lee reference EVER!
Woah!! The bit at 3:47, in the elevator, uses background audio ripped straight from the Gumby where he goes to the moon! Like, the surreal one! It’s identical!
Akton is like a discount William Katt in The Great American Hero... who already is cheap! 😀
Marjo gort
I saw this in 84, 12 years old.. I LOVED IT.. Today it's psyco, but not 4 kids then.... U know, kids before had more fun listening to Radio, than kids today have with a movie......
Haha, I saw this movie in the theater when it was released in 1979. I just streamed it again a few months ago. The movie is awful, but it was fun to watch.
9:56 the sad thing is in modern times that means Star Wars has potentially ripped off star crash twice.
You can watch it for free on plutotv and TH-cam 😎
Yeah Caroline Munro makes me wish someone invented movie cloning. You know the one where the the clone really is an exact physical doppelgänger of the original unlike a real clone would be.
Lock down got me here and it's awesome. I feel like Brandon right now about everything.
great review. love the munro montage. would love a longer version. thanks
I had the joy of watching this movie around 16 years of age with my best friend. This movie was so bad it was good! I laughed so hard for so long I got a headache!
The helmets and jackets are the coolest!!
Luigi Cozzi also made that weird colorized version of the first Godzilla movie.
Cool 😊
Hmf,
I got this movie confused with *Star Slammer* (from '86-ish) - I was like: "I don't remember *any* of this stuff in this movie! ...WTF??"
.....A whole 5 mins later, my brain finally catches up 😳 😅
Saw this in the theater as a kid and loved it. Caroline in that outfit hit me with instant puberty
For me it was Princess Aura (Ornella Muti).
Me too ;-)
Watching this after hearing about Christopher Plummer's passing. Surreal and sad :=(. Still an enjoyable snarky review :=)
You are probably right about the starfields. :P

This movie is actually a lot of fun to watch. I'll be interested to see your Starcrash 2 review, I didn't even know that there was a Starcrash 2! Thanks for posting.
New season of MST3K on Netflix finally did this film
the guy who played Akton has had an interesting life, a glance at his wikipedia page just makes me want to check out his documentary.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marjoe_Gortner
Fun fact (?)!: his parents derived his name from Mary and Joseph.
Very amusing. Good job.
Oh the scene from Star Trek… my favorite line comes next…. Target that explosion and fire!
"If Wolverine were a vampire"
Marvel: "hold my beer"
Yeah, they actually did that..... and he got turned by Jubilee of all people.
one of those rainy day/night movies you would enjoy pizza and beers with mates
Thanks to this review, I had to go look up Caroline Munro. I didn't realize it, but she's the hot girl in the Adam Ant 'Goody Two Shoes' video.
@BrandonTenold Starcrash is going to be back in theaters in America st least. Might want to see if it's playing in Canada
Ever think of reviewing Galaxy of Terror? That one would be right up your alley
Rebirth of the West your wish came true
Just bought this today, based on your review. Thanks for such brilliant (in a bad way) selection of movies to watch
This is Star Wars in 2018.
Yes!!! Lol!! Such a great comment.
Right ... I can really see that they are exactly the same 🙄
This is actually better.
@@SirDankleberry agreed 🙃
As in a sucky film franchise that will never add up to the originals.
love this masterpiece.......luigi cozzi, murno, corman, hasselhoff........what a combination.
Why not review Golden voyage of Sinbad? It gives us more footage of Carpline Munroe.
True! I didn’t find anything from Brandon about Sinbad! This need to be a thing ASAP! - especially since Caroline Munroe is in it 😏
4:19 To be brutally honest, that would be the kind of problem someone would have to deal with every day. And if you think about it, the rotating ele-thingy is well within approved Health & Safety guidelines!
It's like kids with an unlimited budget at the magic shop made it on a rainy weekend.
Oh, hey, now STAR WARS had a "Death Star" type of superweapon that wasn't just the size of a planet, but was one: Starkiller Base. Formerly, the planet Ilum.
I never understood why Caroline Munro wasn't a lot more famous. I mean, my god just look at her!
Maybe cause of that? She looks gorgeous but that seems to be nearly all
@@klavicus2276 did you masturbate while wqcthing this film

Probably because of her British accent
You know I'm glad the star wars series used minimal effects to show the Force doing things. It really makes it appear more mystical and "real" than whatever this movie is attempting.
Also, its always interesting to see a sci fi setting where the Emperor/Empress is not the main villain or even a bad person.
Also Also, I'm almost certain the Floating City is just some computer parts glued together.
"By sunset, I'll be the new emperor... "
What sunset? You're in space !!!!!
My sister's been taking care of me after surgery, and we've been marathoning your reviews - she's addicted! Mua-ha-ha-haaaa! Next, my brother! Then...the WORLD!
Count Zarth on looks more like an Emperor Ming the Merciless, from Flash Gordon, but this movie predates the 80’s Flash Gordon.
Sounds like something Sony would like to build a cinematic universe on? :P XDD
The youngblood David Hasselhoff!
Speaking of Zardoz...when are you gonna do that one?
Omg, yes! ZARDOZ!
I thought he only did shitty cult movies. Am I wrong?
Never seen any of those movies Wardog.
PRAISE THEE TO ZARDOZ!!!!
The gun is good!!!...the penis is evil!!!
This movie should have had it's own line of action figures.
About that planet size killer...
My best explosive laughter was when Count Cape-ulon, on a space ship/station thingy, declares his victory will occur... by SUNSET!
Just watched the MST3K episode. It’s like they saw you used a clip from their show and were like, “Yeah, we’re stealing all this guy’s jokes”
I REALLY liked the 'Saskatchewan in January' quote :-)
13:15 Holy shit! Brandon has super powers!
Can we just loop the amazon scene?
I am old enough to have watched this in the theater. My friend and I were yelling the screen between laughing so hard. It was very bad. ;)
It's an obvious rip-off of Star Wars, yet, amazingly, it had an ice planet and green lightsabers before Star Wars!
Also a flying city.
Don't forget the heroine in a space bikini.
And battle droids.
😎
And a YEEEHAW!
"By sunset"?! You're in outer space!
This movie looks like a lot of (very stupid) fun.
El (no relation to Kal El) is restored eventually.
It's always the better when the so much fun part is unintentional.. Liigi cozzi what a ham director... Lol his writing is terrible. His direction ludicrous, his attentions to detail.... Absent
This has to be one of Brandon's best movie reviews... Hilarious.. Inspired... Great great stuff. Thankyou
I was about to mention this, and how our host doesn't.
Don't be embarrassed it's an awesomely cool movie.
This is on free TH-cam movies! I watched it last week when I couldn't sleep and it's actually really good. I didn't feel the need to fast forward through any of it, which is more than I can say of the new Godzilla anime
Come on, this is a masterpiece, admit it!
0:17 who would of guessed that an Italian movie industry who make 16 sequels/prequels of a knockoff of a good film franchise?
I'm watching this on MST3K right now.
Awesome how was it 😊
45 years old now
So damn funny this the first Star Wars ripoff
Christopher Plummer and David Hasselhoff teamed up at last 😅
But let’s face it; the true reason to watch this is Caroline Monroe ❤❤❤
