    I've never heard of this dance. I enjoyed watching it, though; the beautiful dresses, fancy footwork, and the whimsical jingles! The backing drums and vocals, were very entertaining, as well.

    Many years ago I was able to visit a reservation in New Mexico with my Church's youth group. The pastor of the community had a daughter that was into jingle and fancy shaw dancing. It was awesome and a personally uplifting experience. Even more impressive is the fact that she made her own dresses and the jingles were made from Copenhagen can lids. Such a fascinating culture.

    I think this video was taken at the Hull Child and Family Stampede Breakfast in Calgary, Alberta. I am 85% sure I recognize it because I was there. Or maybe I saw another rendition of the same dance.
    It is even more amazing in person though, the drum beat and the vocals get into your chest and you feel so alive.

    fascinating to watch and each of the costumes are so unique in their own way. love the designs. the bells remind me of chimes blowing in the wind trying to communicate with the ancestors perhaps a ceremony for other means such as a member of the tribe who may have passed on and the bells ring for comfort during his or her journey . Yup. But just a few hundred years is enough to split a culture or two, how long did it take for the Latins to split into Spaniard and Italians and French and Romansh, etc. This kind of dance most likely developed independently of Mexican dance.

    Can someone please share with me how do Jingle Dress Dance competitions work? I’ve seen Jingle Dress Dance competitions where the dancers eventually are asked to leave the stage one by one until only one dancer is left and becomes the winner

    • @irenemary1680
      @irenemary1680 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Lizzeth Montejano (La Potosina) usually the category is judged by several judges and the dancers are given points and based off of those added up points from all contests plus grand entry points they choose a winner. But it sounds like you are talking about a jingle dress special where the dancers compete in so many rounds of songs and who ever makes it to the finals is chosen by a judge or they are exited from the arena one by one until there is only one dancer left.

      Here where I live in Ontario, Canada, many communities host Pow Wows that are open to the public. They have art sales, food stalls, music performances, dance competitions, and (my favourite) inter-tribal dances, where anyone from any culture is welcomed into the dance circle.
