Some thoughts: and this comes from old guy that has driven things and knows very little.. First and foremost, I’m with Tony on Queen and the C5 being perpetually appropriate. Full stop. Second, I chose the following answers based on top songs from the model years mentioned, so they are period correct, in that regard. However, the appropriate answer (for me) for all of the listed cars is anything from the Mother’s Finest “ Another Mother Further” album. Put that on repeat and just go, that’s a top-tier album to encompass the following cars. 429: Evil Ways - Santana S30: Me and Bobby McGee - Fcuking Janis Slantnose: (tied) You’re No Good - Linda Ronstadt, Feel Like Makin’ Love - Bad Company, Killer Queen - Queen Countach: Loco Motion - Grand Funk Railroad. I chose this over “Taking Care of Business” by BTO solely because I’m partial to GFR because I’ve jammed with the drummer. Not a viable metric, by any measure.. All that to say: C5 is a great choice, as good as the modern Z, in my opinion. I’d keep the auto. A “driver’s car” is one that makes you feel something more every time you drive it. Not just when new, and not because your skill is improving, but because the chassis is more capable than you expected it to be, continually. (looking at you, mkii mx-5.) 16:00 minutes in, that 8-bit Xterra is king. 19:00 that Lada analog is DOING IT 25:00 NPC / “traffic” cars are totally fine for many, and can be made into fun things with work/money. No problem. 27:00 Rocks rock. 34:xx a G wagon is, unequivocally, not a wagon. 36:26 Tony talks about driving a slow car fast and meh about fast cars being fast, but 37:25 when he says “if it makes you feel something”.. And that’s the meat of it, isn’t it? If a car can bring you into the present and to the attention of what’s in front of you, that’s why we talk about cars, isn’t it? That’s the draw. 41:00 Listen, this could not possibly be more true. An aging car is absolutely about the vibe more than it is about the performance numbers. People ask me if my car is fast, and the answer is complicated. No, but maybe comparatively speaking, so that’s something substantial. 47:00 Buy a Maverick. 47:36 family of *five* 48:36 THE ALTIMA (driver thinks s/he) IS KING - 49:42 Tony, “capable” is an interesting word choice here. 52:00 I miss my Miata, and I’ve bought/sold/regretted a fukcton of cars.. Or a GTS Cayenne because those seats are beautiful. 54:40 Not considering reliability? 330 BMW Touring. 57:58 Tony, give him a break. Bungle got ahold of BMW and things looked..well.. But the E46 was the last good Touring chassis (imho). 1:02:20 The 991 911 and s2k are really good examples of German and Japanese refinement, and I still prefer something (NB) that has more road feel. 1:08:00 This is where we are no longer friends. You don’t get it, it’s ok. ;) A Miata is not a slow car driven fast, it’s a chassis that doesn’t fit this metric. Tl;dr: (directed at the general populace) Go buy a Miata with new suspension bushings and learn what the road is trying to tell you. There is nothing more that can be taught without many hours of track time. I’ve had both and stick to my recommendation for anyone that isn’t looking to make money behind the wheel.
