This elevator is not safe and would be red tagged no mechanical door interlocking to prevent opening unless the cab is on the landing. Sounds like there is a series wired door contact to prevent the elevator from moving when a door is open. I think it would be considered MRL with the geared traction machine off to the side, top of the shaft with the sheave. And the controller relays are close by. 2:1 roping very common with freight elevators. I know of a modern MRL gear less traction with has a compensating sheave on the counterweight w/a 2nd hoist rope on the cab
