  • Tara Conner, Miss USA 2006, shares her life-long struggle with addiction and what she has learned from 10 years of sobriety. Addicts are not bad people that need to get good, but sick people that need to get well. In this challenging and at times humorous talk, she calls for a different response to the addiction crisis.
    Tara Conner is a Television Personality and Recovery Advocate. Through her work, she shares her experience, strength and hope with audiences throughout the United States.
    Conner was crowned Miss USA in 2006. During December of that year, she entered the Caron Treatment Center and completed 30 days of treatment for alcohol and drug addiction. She has since celebrated 10 years of sobriety.
    This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

    I personally went to school with Tara. I am glad to see that she overcame these addictions and is able to talk about it. Maybe her speech will help the next 14 year old little girl who is struggling with life. Make KY proud sis.

    Thank you for sharing. I'm a person in long term recovery. 11/15/11 is my clean date. I'm blessed to be able to share with addicts on a daily basis because God found me worthy to work in a drug rehab as a peer support. I love that you called out the old-timers to share their recovery. Together we do recover.

    People will look down at people with addictions... Being told to be a good mom, just stop drinking, just cut back, you just like to drink, you dont have a problem... Its heart breaking, especially when people will ignore cries for help and say its attention seeking... well yeh it is... they was attention in that they want to be heard, helped... its a cry for help.

    Shame is a huge component of addiction. We addicts use partly to escape the shame we feel from using. Shaming addicts for their behavior to help them is like throwing gasoline on a fire to put it out.

  • @iseewhatyoudidthere1245
    @iseewhatyoudidthere1245 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for this presentation. What you shared will help many people be inspired to get well. That being said...addicts should be careful how " loud" we are about our recovery. Did you know that if you are a victim of medical malpractice you will not be able to be a witness? The very fact that a person is in a treatment program, Proves that person is an addict and therefore not a " credible witness". So dont be Too loud because in a legal sense, declaring oneself to be an addict means that anyone can do anything to you and they will never be punished. Trust me on this.
    When people learn that someone is an addict, they don't care about our recovery. All they hear is that you Had to recover. BUT if you have lots of money, support, etc...you probably CAN be as loud as you want.

    The problem is even worse than this because even treatment fails 90% of the time. I believe the reason is that it ignores trauma, and rather than utilizing effective low cost treatments, some such as EMDR is that have been around for at least a decade. 12 step programs have a place, and should be available and encouraged for those who want it, but it is not working as the foundation of most treatment programs because it ignores trauma. I was glad that Tara Conner included her trauma in the story of her addiction,but it ends without telling us what broke the cycle.

    • @MaryLopez-kb7xp
      @MaryLopez-kb7xp 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree. Trauma is the real reason behind alcoholism and there are many ways to heal trauma that do not involve a treatment center. I think we mostly need more of an awareness.
