- Top Gear (Top Racer in Japan), is a 1992 racing video game for the Super NES, published by Kemco and developed by Gremlin Graphics. Not only does it mark first game in the Top Gear racing game franchise, but it is also one of the first racing games to be released on the Super NES. The objective of the game is to become the fastest driver in the world by racing other drivers across several nations. The franchise is unrelated to the TV programme of the same name.
The music in Top Gear mostly consists of remixed tracks from the Lotus series of racing games on the Amiga produced by Barry Leitch. For example, the title music of Top Gear is taken from the ending of Lotus Turbo Challenge 2, and the third race of each country uses a remixed version of the Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge title theme. Joey Heppell I never had an SNES, but that didn't stop me from emulating this game and loving the soundtrack. I had a Genesis back in the day, and I played Lotus on it.

Barry Leitch,o compositor de Top Gear (e anos depois de Top Gear Rally,pra N64) fez a soundtrack do jogo em apenas cinco dias. E esse foi seu primeiro trabalho no sistema de 16-bits da Nintendo. Ele tinha trocado de cidade pra trabalhar com a Gremlin Graphics no jogo,e na hora de pedir alguns samples de Amiga (um sistema com chip de som similar e que Leitch já tinha experiência),ele só recebeu um disquete com sons genéricos e um manual de como usar o SPC700,mas infelizmente apenas em japonês. Depois de muito trabalho,ele decidiu usar algumas músicas da série Lotus Turbo Challenge (2 clássicos jogos de corrida pro Amiga,e Barry trabalhou na sequência).
Se você ver no osciloscópio,vai ver que apenas a música da tela de título e de encerramento usam 10 canais de áudio. O resto usa apenas 4. Na época era só um projeto pra ganhar uns trocados...
... até que,em meados dos anos 2000,ele recebeu e-mails de fãs sobre seu trabalho no jogo. Aí ele descobriu o impacto de Top Gear no Brasil. Depois ele trabalharia em Horizon Chase,que é um continuamento espiritual de Top Gear, série que desde a era PS2 não vê um jogo novo.

I came across my old SNES packed away in the attic and blew the dust off and went through the games. Forgot all about this game until I came upon it. Can't believe it still works after being boxed away for more than 15 years in the attic. One of the best race games back in the early 90's. Even today can't beat that soundtrack.

I wish I was born in the 1970s-80s, so that i can feel how it is to play on an NES, SNES, and other retro consoles. Sure, I we got emulators, but I feel like it doesn't have the same effect as playing on the original console with the controller.

I remember when I got this game back in 1992 for my brand new SNES. My uncle got this game for me for my birthday at K-Mart and it was $70 !!! The best racing game for SNES hands down.
Oh man I remember in school all I thought about was just getting home and playing this game and continuing from where I left off. I wrote down all the pass keys every time I would move onto the next country.
I have so many fantastic memories of playing this with my Dad when I was a kid. I love everything about it, especially the music. Wow! :')

My childhood in sound! I was destine to drive a racecar.... until I turned 17 and started have back issues, now I'm 38yo and walk with a cane... not due to a crash but a rare spinal condition, a problem that lets me drive for a living but never a racecar. I have driven more miles then most long haul truckers and have the skills to drive a car at high speeds (as I do that for my courier job) but because I make so little and need to spend my money on keeping me out of pain so bad I have tried to end myself so being able to drive a real racecar in a real race... it breaks me heart and soul everyday! If you want to drive a racecar you better be rich and not have any issues, I may get to drive for a living but I don't call my life "Living" I call it waiting to die because my dreams are so far from reach I might as well want to be a spaceship captain!

This was a big hit in the Philippines when i was really young my family could not afford gaming stuff so my only way of expiriencing is to drop coins on old arcade machines the buttons are cracked and busted but i still played this for 1 pesos for 5 minutes rent one of the best moments of my life.

Thankfully there is some phenomenal indie projects these days with amazing soundtracks developed to tickle that sense of nostalgia. I'm really glad we're seeing so many. Now I just want to see a racing game pay homage to the old school racers like this one.
