Minimalism allows us to stay tidy as there aren't many items to move or dust.

@@supercrazydesi Minimalism makes it much easier to stay tidy for sure. But even in a minimalist home, we have to stay on top of good habits like Shannon shows here. It's the cherry on top of the simpler home sundae. ☺️💖

You are so right about habits. I wasn’t feeling well and made the conscious decision not to clean up the kitchen and run the dishwasher like I do every night. In the middle of the night I went to the kitchen to refill my water glass. Without even thinking about it I had the kitchen cleaned and the dishwasher running before I left to go back to bed.

Shannon, I’ve heard many women talk about how washing dishes at the sink makes their back ache so much. I used to have the same problem. Then I moved to a home where the sink and counters were about three inches taller than my old home. What a difference! Women are taller now than they were in the 1950s. When you remodel, think about getting modern-height counters so you don’t have to stoop so much.
    I love your minimal home.

Hi Shannon, I think the US has had dishwashers for a lot longer than we have in Aus. I am 58 and grew up without a dishwasher and my sister and I had to take turns of washing and wiping. So did all my friends. My parents did get a dishwasher when I was an adult, but then they moved into a house without one. I have never had a dishwasher until this house I am in now, and I still wash and wipe up every night with my husband. We talk about our day etc. whilst doing it. We only use it when we have guests and lots more dishes. We were taught to start with hot soapy water in the sink, start with glassware, cutlery, crockery and pots last. We actually feel it is a lot quicker to wash up than use the dishwasher, as they are washed, dried and put away all within 20 minutes, whereas, you need to stack the dishwasher, put it on, let it dry (and most times it isn't completely dry and you need to wipe them), then unpack and put away the next day. Phew!!! Ha ha ha! Just our perspective. Love Jo xx

This was one of my favorites to date! I just got finished getting the "big chunks" around here and isn't it refreshing afterward?Yes, the dust is a crazy thing. My husband changes out the air filters often and STILL the dust builds up. I find myself dusting almost daily ( only because ) I'm allergic to dust. But it's not a big chore...I just take a feather duster and knock it to the floor and then send out the robot vacuum daily. I'm thinking it may be what our 2 pups bring in from outside....indoor pets really change the dirt ratio (( smiles)).
Shannon, I'm amazed at how you paint so beautifully. We do not have much on the walls and definitely no artwork because I'm picky about art that isn't pretty. I tell myself until the day that I can find art that I love, I'll just enjoy the few framed prints that are words ( I like verses or funny definitions, coffee tea etc ) I always thought it would be awesome to have a friend who painted and then I could ask them to please paint me something l o l I love your mom's style where she will do stilllife with fruit. But I also love your style that is abstract....if that is the correct term. Don't you dislike the ugly art that is in stores l o l? Your painting is so beautiful and it's not even finished yet..😊
I feel you're pain with the patio set, we are still looking and it's been over six years
    l o l
Wishing you a lovely day, we finally have temps in the 80's with thunderstorms in the forecast.

I know what you mean with the dust! It's never ending, but it isn't too much work to deal with that regularly as you mentioned. I wish I had more time for painting lol. Sometimes unfinished paintings hang on my walls for a long time. I hope you are having a good day and I hope this is the year you find your patio set. =)

Today, I washed three sets of curtains, washed all the windows, window seals, washed my glass front door, and mopped my bedroom & underneath my bed. Cleaned kitchen, 2 bathrooms, wash two pair of tennis shoes. I vacuumed the living room yesterday and then turned around and vacuumed it today after dusting all the furniture. Turn the furniture upside down so I could get underneath everything and clean my couch with a vacuum brush. I have a dog so I put a clean sheet over my entire loveseat. Tomorrow I'm packing because Thursday - Sunday we're going to the beach. 😅

Bonjour Shannnon, we don't have a dishwasher either. My back tends to become sore very quickly when there are lots of dishes to wash, but I've noticed that wearing the flattest possible footwear when doing this helps a lot! Even a couple of centimeters less in the sole makes such a big difference. Another tip my chiropractor gave me is to keep my feet wide apart (so as to lower my gravity center) now and then when washing the dishes and ironing. It also helps that my husband often washes the dishes too (and he's much taller than me) :D

I’m so impressed by everyone commenting on getting by without a dishwasher. We were without a dishwasher for two years and I did all the dishes at night, timed it and it took 1 hour each night (without drying it) that’s a days worth of work in a week?! Filling the dishwasher at night and putting it away each day takes 15 minutes a day. The time difference and with my salary, in a year that equals to about 4200 usd. Women’s labor is not free!!!

    • @shannontorrens1

This is exactly what I think! Throughout the day as we use dishes I try my hardest to clean them right away and let them air dry to save some time. But this is the thing that really wears me out (and probably every other person in the world) I prep and make dinner which can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour and then its straight into doing all the dishes for another hour after dinner. That is only the dishes from dinner. We eat every meal at home so that is about 2 hours every night. My family helps sometimes, but with little kids this is hard because someone has to watch the baby as all this is happening. Anywho I agree that our time is valuable as a woman as you stated. So I was just sharing a real struggle I have with a daily chore that wears me out lol. When we redo our kitchen a dishwasher is high on the list of things I will be investing it lol. If I do the math on what I make per hour when I work I should be paid about $100 each night hahaha

I don't have that many dishes and if I rinse the dishes off before sticking it in there, I might as well add the dish liquid to a rag and clean it by hand. I guess that's my logic. Now if I had a house full of kids and more dishes than I do, I'd probably use one.

Hi Linda, I agree with the dishes situation until just recently. It was always very easy to keep on top of, I am not sure what changed but now it seems to be out of hand. Maybe it's the kids being able to grab dishes on their own or we are just busier. We are trying to get this patio done and then the garage is on the list. =) I hope you are having a good weekend.

      @@shannontorrens1 - kid suggestion that worked for us;
Each kid is assigned a glass; they start each day with their clean glass and use the same one all through the day. After they drink something, "they" rinse it out & leave it by the sink till the next use. End of the day, it gets washed, ready for the next day.
      It's their responsibility.
I believe Minimal Mom uses this method and includes their plates, bowls & cups.
Another channel I watch, Nourishing Minimalism, did this with glasses, she took the kids to a thrift store and each choose their own "special" glass.

In my last house though I was able to bleach the grout and it turned out nice and white! I would just spray some bleach on the grout line, let it sit for a while then use a scrubbing brush to scrub it and then wash it off with soap and water =)

So this is why he doesn't want to do anything else with the kitchen right now. Also he does help with the dishes when I ask, but usually, he is working when I am doing them.
