    Washington DC was designed by Parisian Pierre Charles L'Enfant. Like Paris, D.C. was designed so that, if ever attacked, the army could move easily through the city to confront the enemy so its concentric boulevards and bridges are reminiscent of Paris. Surely, you must have come across that name while in DC, aka L'Enfant Circle, etc.

    Yeah - Washington, D.C. is a beautiful city with an endless number of attractions to go see, especially if you're willing to take a 1 or 2 hour drive. I believe it's also alot less expensive there compared to places like NY. Most of the museums and the National Zoo are free, right? I don't think museums or zoos or anything like that are free in NY. I used to go visit my Grandmother and Grandfather in DC every summer from 1974 to 1980. I loved it. When TH-camrs ask "what city should I visit in the US?", I always recommend Washington D.C. Less than 2 hours away you can also go see Mt Vernon (President Washington's home), Luray Caverns, Harper's Ferry, Kings Dominion amusement park, Annapolis, Baltimore - it's just awesome.

    I have lived in the DC area since 1999 - a very long time. The thing about this area is that you never run out of things to see or do. The area is very rich culturally and historically. One thing I HIGHLY RECOMMEND is to spend some time AWAY from tourist areas. Go into the neighborhoods and dine where the locals dine, for example. There is much more than the mall and Georgetown.

    It's so strange seeing these things through your lens -- I actually know those areas! 😅 Work brings me into DC all the time. Here's a few tips for whenever you decide to come back:
    1) My wife and I love taking Amtrak to NYC. Penn Station in New York connects directly to Union Station in DC. If you're willing to take a night train, the fare is like $10 in coach. Takes a bit less time than the bus, too.
    2) The DC Metro rail system has day passes. Touring above ground is more picturesque, but when you start wanting to get to places off the Walking Mall, it's worth considering. It's also the easiest way to get from Union Station down town.
    3) The Capitol has fairly extensive tours. Enter through the Capitol Visitors Center. I've been told by an employee the best time to come is when Congress is NOT in session. It's much less crazy.
    All of the Smithsonian properties are worth seeing. The Air & Space museum is my personal favorite, but you can't go wrong with the art museum. Good choices. 👍

      Harder to get to, but if you have time, the Air & Space museum has a kind of "part 2" out by Dulles International Airport, much bigger - with one of the space shuttles, large World War II and jet planes, etc. Both museums are excellent.

    Try out some of the Ethiopian Restaurants in Addams-Morgan neighborhood. There are lots of cool restaurants in that area. Stick to Northwest DC, Georgetown, and the area around the Mall. Stay out of Northeast and Southeast. Too dangerous. Kennedy Center is great for live performances such as Symphony Orchestra. You need to return to Washinton D.C. for the cherry blossoms in March and April. And, also, the National Portrait Gallery (which is also free of charge), which has cool paintings of all of the U.S. Presidents, and their wives.

    • @springertube
      @springertube ปีที่แล้ว

      This ^^. I mentioned the Jefferson Memorial elsewhere, but that is particularly nice around cherry blossom time, with its setting next to the Tidal Pool lined with the trees. Hitting the cherry blossoms just right can sometimes be hit or miss, so see the Memorial whenever the opportunity,...but if you can or have to choose one time...

    So pleased to see you enjoying American life, may your studies go well. The American White House was in fact designed by James Hoban from Kilkenny, Ireland and he was chosen by George Washington who wanted an unostentatious construction. The original French designer was dismissed because his designs were too lavish and the building too large for the taste of George Washington. The building is based on Leinster House in Dublin.
    Best wishes to you, take care 😊 😺

    At the White House I hope you went to the backyard at the park. It’s a lot closer.
    It’s small because it’s supposed to be a semi-normal house for the people. The president is not a king or an emperor he’s an employee of the people. (Also, it’s part of a labyrinth of tunnels.)
    Boo!
    Halloween is approaching. What will you be?
    I suggest Wednesday. You’ll have to buy some clothes … you can use in your future. Or just get a premade adult Wednesday costume and fix it up.
    Or go as Bridge and Tunnel girls and wear some of what you have [ just kidding ;) ]?

    Other places that you can make short trips to:
    Boston - one of the most historic cities in the US, and one of the most European ones. While you are there, check out Cambridge as well. Massachusetts in general has lots of interesting places to visit, lots of history. Salem is another town near Boston that is worth a visit, especially if you are interested in the history of the Salem witch trials.
    Philadelphia is only 2 hours from NYC. It's another historic city. Check out the old town for quiet cobblestone streets and lots of American history.
    Newport, Rhode Island - very cute, historic little city, known as a yachting capital. It was also a place for the rich and famous of the Gilded Age to hang out, and has some amazing historical mansions that are open for tours.
    Mystic, Connecticut - home to Mystic seaport, the largest maritime museum in the US, with focus on the 19th century, and the whaling history of the US. There is also an excellent aquarium there.
    Speaking of aquariums, if you like animals you should check out the Bronx Zoo in NYC - one of the largest and best zoos in the US.

    Any place in the USA is clean compared to NY. NYC is just so overcrowded.

    • @solconcordia4315
      @solconcordia4315 ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree about NYC's being dirty due to its being overcrowded. There are less crowded places which are dirty and more crowded places which are clean.
      *Cleanliness is cultural* .
      NYC being dirty has more to do with its having a diverse population a fraction of which are "litterbugs."

      @@solconcordia4315 That’s a valid perspective. But I’ve never seen a big city I didn’t think was dirty. But I’m from a town of 800. Perspective, I suppose.

      Tokyo may be a huge city which is probably (as I've never walked its streets and neighborhoods myself) not dirty. The Japanese people are very physically clean.
      I was a "litterbug" in my young childhood until my Mom told me to bring home the chewing gum and wrapper when I finished. The chewing gum was an "offering" from my brother to placate his "little monkey on his back" god. 😂

    Lovely video Dari, great architecture which is familiar from movies. Most based on European styles, the white house was actually based on a house in Dublin. I was scared by your red eyes though, but it is nearly Halloween! I think you said you had an exam so could not go out that night but I hope you pass it and get to celebrate another day!

    Happy you enjoyed it. 🙂 I've taken the tour inside the White House (requires background checks months ahead of time). It is small. The USA was formed by a historic rejection of royalty, so we don't like the idea of large, kingly political estates. 🙂

      George Washington had a surprisingly modest mansion, considering that he was actually one of the wealthiest folks in the US. The "Gilded Age" of the late 19th did see more rich folks travel to Europe and feel a need to compete.

    Enjoyed your video, Dari! I am glad you liked your time in D.C.. Haha, I have lived in the DC area (just across the Potomac River in Virginia) for 40 years and, for me, D.C. is boring, unsafe and feels cold and unwelcoming. The city is not walking friendly as the city blocks and distances between buildings and squares are absolutely enormous. Homelessness is a problem, even though you didn't see so much. I only go into D.C. if I have to for an event or meeting, to go to the train station to catch a train to NYC, or to give tours to my out of town guests. It was interesting to get your new perspective, though! Moscow and St. Petersburg actually look nicer and more interesting to me in your videos that you created before you left Russia. 😁I am glad that you got to experience America's capital city and the White House in person!

    • @VicariousAdventurer
      @VicariousAdventurer ปีที่แล้ว

      Seriously, the entire area is restricted, according to a novel I read. Americans can't get any closer than Russians. In truth, exhibits in the museum can only be seen by the general population when they loan the exhibit.

    • @Noodles2239
      @Noodles2239 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, anybody can order an Uber to take you to the CIA but what happens is that the taxi takes you to a visitor center far from CIA, where your identity and appointment is verified. Then they order a shuttle bus to take you to headquarters.

    Glad you liked DC. I taught at GW Law School for a couple years and really liked the area. Very clean, green and convenient. 4 distinct seasons so the weather is quite good and better than NYC. Maryland and Virginia are lovely states with greats parks and hiking. And the ocean is right there, although I prefer Chesapeake Bay just an hour away from DC for sailing rather than the open ocean. The US Navy college is in Annapolis, which is on the water and just an hour or so away. A lovely and historic small city. Maybe you could meet a nice Midshipman (naval academy student) there! Very very difficult college to get into because you need to be a top student, and very fit and athletic. Also, next time you go you need to see Alexandria, a small city just across a bridge into DC. Lovely historic area and interesting to see to walk around shopping, getting coffee and some food.

      Generally speaking, it's a good idea to avoid the parts of the city east of the Anacostia River. Fortunately, the only things on that side of the river that would attract tourists are the Entertainment and Sports Arena (where the WNBA team, the Washington Mystics, play) and Frederick Douglas' home in the neighborhood of Anacostia. Other than that, so long as you remain aware of your surroundings, as you should in any city, DC is perfectly safe.
