Heysen Trail | Day 01 | Parachilna Gorge to Aroona Campground | Australian long-distance hiking

  • After years of pondering, months of training and weeks of planning, my time to walk the Heysen Trail had finally arrived.
    The date was August 13, 2018, my bag was heavy, the hour was late, the sun was high and South Australia’s mid-north temperatures were heating up. However, at least my breakfast belly was full of anything but porridge (the only time this would happen for a week). Eggs Benedict may be the perfect ‘final meal’ before launching into a long-distance hike.

    There may be no better snapshot of South Australia’s natural diversity than the winding route of the 1,200-kilometre Heysen Trail. This epic multi-day walk transverses rocky coastal landscapes, untouched bushland, pristine National Parks, soaring pine forests, sweeping pastoral districts and the state’s famous Barossa Valley vineyards.

    Hey buddy, thanks for joining my channel. I have come to show you my support and joined your channel. Wonderful walk, we walked four days of the Heyson trail in 2000 from Paracilna gorge to Willpena pound and it was an awesome adventure. Look forward to watching more of your content.

    Hi there! Just wondering what advice you can give on water availability along the trail? Is it generally only at shelters? Many fresh sources that you came across?

    • @TrekkingWest
      @TrekkingWest  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Yes, of course. I didn't run into any water issues while on the Trail. I'd say 95% of the available water is to be found in tanks. There are a few ponds etc. But far too few to rely on. I took a 3L water bladder, but by the time I arrived in the south, I would only need to fill 2L of it (I think my body may have grown used to the sweat loss).

    I walked this section solo in 2018 too in reverse direction. Mine was a lot easier as I didn't have to carry overnight camping gear.
