A great great stage, no question. But you have to feel for Demi Vollering. Losses the race because her team couldn't be bothered to help her when she crashed. Damn.
That was terrible. It immediately shifted my view of the women's peleton. They do not ride like the men. They obviously do not respect the leaders jersey, or the leader of the team. I was appalled when the whole SD Worx team abandoned Vollering after she was taken down in the stage the other day, when she was in the leaders jersey. Maybe there was a coup going on and we didn't know, it was ugly and unsporting.
@@ipodman79 i somewhat agree. While I don’t harbor any dislike for Demi, from what I’ve seen in the past she doesn’t come across as very likeable. Even after wins. Big Kudos to Kasia for her "never give up" attitude...she was cooked at the Glandon but managed to recover and fight back. So a well deserved win for her!
In that scene Rooijakkers said: "wait, I need to catch my breath" Vollering replies "Fuck off (literally these words), we just had a descent!" But Rooijakkers said on Dutch TV that she really was on her limit the entire time. Obviously it was tactical to not pull too much, but she didn't intentionally sandbag.
@@anthonylarson7919 Well, compared to Pogacar, pretty much all other professional riders look mega unfit. It is just the way it is when you compare 'mid' pros to the star player
Even being Dutch this was the dream outcome. SD winning again wouldn't be the best for the sport, this was the exciting ending i can remember, Niewiadoma has worked for it and deserved a giant win, DV still has a victory and last this shows that if SD was riding for DV her GC and not just a stage win they could have had it
Congrats to Niewiadoma; this was a nailbiter and she put everything in to win at the end. That being said, Vollering's team cost her this TdF by not sending anyone to help pace after her crash on Stage 5.
Demi clearly the best rider in the world, but this isn’t one big time trial - crashes, teamwork, tactics all play a role. Kasia well-deserved win - played ig beautifully and dug DEEP. Much respect.
Is it because the talent pool for elite womens cycling is so small that domestiques can do what they want? The treatment of Demi Vollering is tantamount to gross misconduct and in men's cycling that behaviour would potentially make a rider unemployable.
What do you mean? You can debate the tactics and the team actions in the aftermat of the crash were questionable, but everyone rode for Vollering in the mountain stages. They just weren't strong enough to do much.
I had the same feeling about professional malpractice but then I recalled the men’s race a dozen years ago in which Froome crashed (in yellow) and crazily started running up the road without his bike….and one of his teammates rode right past him, didn’t stop and pass him his bike or anything. It’s impossible to understand, except that maybe in these high intensity moments people just aren’t thinking straight.
@@Krypt000n Doubt it. They acted on team orders on crash day. There was a short live interview with Danny Stam (SDW team manager) on Sporza (belgian TV) minutes after Vollering finished that day. He basically said that radio coms were chaos, by the time they figured out where everyone was there was only 3 k to ride and they only told Bredewold to fall back and wait for Vollering. They didn't bother with anyone else, as Vas was going for vicory and Bredewold "was the only one that could push a worthwhile wattage to make a difference".
@@JanneBernards What a nonsense ("was the only one that could push a worthwhile wattage to make a difference".). More riders are potentially faster than one rider. And if they aren't, what are they doing in an elite team at the TdF? Women's road cycling tactics are usually absolute crap and I cannot understand why the team managements are so incompetent.
I wonder how many days Demi would not sleep well given its the team's fault after all. Demi's teammates should be ashamed of themselves! 4 secs GC gap?? If they would have comeback to her to pull after the crash she would be standing at the top of the podium.
If she would've waited until the final climb she would've been in yellow to... what happened after that crash, that was on the team. What happened today, that's on her.
The team obviously doesn’t like or respect her. They slacked on her last year when they disappeared when they needed to close the gap on a breakaway. I personally am on the fence about her as I haven’t seen much to like in her despite trying but it must be hard when the team won’t work for you.
@@xAudiolith is your brain dumb enough not to understand simple things? She did her best on the mountains. The only difference is that if the team pulled her after the crash(which is the right thing to do since she is the leader in GC that time), she would have save enough time to win GC. I dont know how your little brain works for you not to understand that.
I don't know if the women's peleton has the depth for that many stages with the same riders, but as an interim measure I think it would be cool to have three 6 or 7 day races in a row and do a cumulative GC for any rider who does all three.
Well, you can’t blame Rooijakkers. She knew 100% Vollering was beating her in the sprint if they go together to the line together. If she works, Demi wins she gets second. No chance for a win. If she sits, Vollering will keep Niewiadoma away on her own and then Paulina can take one swing at Demi and maybe drop her. This scenario is the only scenario in which she has a chance to win the stage and maybe overall GC. She saw some weakness in DV and took her shot at her. Didn’t work. But she took a shot at the win instead of securing second place. Hats off to going for the win!
The commentator on the motorbike also mentioned the DS told her she would work with DV, so that’s consistent with her being cooked. But then to me the DS’s decision to work is a bad one. Go for a win or go home. So now she is 3rd on GC instead of being second. Who cares?
@@st14 In interviews, both for Dutch and Flemish TV if I'm not mistaken, Rooijakkers said that her DS told her not to pull for Demi Vollering (and also that she simply didn't have the power to do that anymore).
With that flat section between climbs maybe Demi attacking on the Alp du Huez would have been a better plan. Lots of energy expended on the flats with little help. Pretty exciting finish!
This is what I was thinking.. just stick to Kasia like glue until Alp du Huez, then launch with everything you have.. I think that would have had a better chance.
Like, this is exactly what I needed to see. Was not able to watch the stage yesterday and was unable to figure out what happened between the two breakaway riders. Every freakin' stage highlights showing all the "drama" without showing the actual thing that decided this. Not it is clear where she lost it. Thanks LR!
When desperate, embrace your inner Pantani and hope for the best. What a race - this was fantastic and gripping to the end. Sad for Vollering, super happy for Niewiadoma... one of my favourite races this season.
She only won one stage, the one that Vollering crashed, without her fault. The Yellow Jersey from Poland lost every duel with Vollering in this 2024 tour.

These 4 Seconds make the situation after the crash even worse. Whoever made that decision surely must feel bad for Vollering. Still full credit to Kasia for her insane performance
As long as everyone reminds themselves that if she had not crashed, this would have been one of the easiest W's for Vollering, we can celebratie Kasia finally getting rid of her curse and not finishing perpetual 2nd and 3rd in big races. She did ride a fantastic Alp d'Huez ( Kasia ). And Vollering had a lot of problems today with her back, that is why she looked like she was suffering.. she was suffering, from the crash. Edit: Rooyakkers had team orders to not pull..
Fucking incredible. Saw Kasia with Taylor outside a cafe in Girona last week, looked chilled, said hard luck in Paris but all the best for the Tour but never imagined she'd do this. Every second counts, thanks, Chloe, thanks, Lucinda but Vollering needs to get better at backing herself. She looked so nervous but think she more than had it and could easily have ridden the valley by herself. We saw how important descending was in the men's version, it proved to be the undoing here. If you ignore the fact your team mate crashed you out and didn't bother to wait to help pull you back in. Probably wouldn't have made too much of a difference but it was the least you could do after Vollering pulled to no result for the first couple of sprints.
while the crash support was AWOL, you're spot on in terms of if Deni didn't wait while 1:38 ahead, she could have took it back. WHAT a ride by the entire podium.
We all agree that Vollering’s teammates screwing her after that crash ruined her victory. But I’m going to shout until the day I die that Canyon-SRAM hammering it after the crash was insane. I am generally not an unwritten rules guy, and I don’t think they have to just stop. But how hard they rode the final 6.5km after the crash is a bit too much.
Great video as ever! Many thanks for excellent highlights and explanations - super exciting racing but needed the maths in this video real time - commentators could have got the 1:05 target if they'd been sharper - no-one seemed to know immediately after the finish.
Haha, Demi was better on ITT and on mountains too. Kasia had luck, that Demi had not better teammates. Kasia was not so strong, than Demi, that's the truth.

Who knew when I was with Kasia Niewiadoma on a Coffee Ride in 2016, that 8 years later she will be a TDFF Winner?! :)
A great great stage, no question. But you have to feel for Demi Vollering. Losses the race because her team couldn't be bothered to help her when she crashed. Damn.
When her teammate crashed her.
Wiebes. Names count.
Remember these ladies live together, train together, eat together, etc. I have to wonder if everyone might just be over her and are waiting for the season to be over. That doesn’t excuse their non-support though. Hopefully things will be brighter with a fresh start for everyone involved next year.
@@dstngshI had the same feeling too that Demi wasn't well liked in the Peloton.. they would rather have Kasia keeping the Jersey than Demi getting the overall...
Fuck, this tour was sick! Sad for Demi but also super stoked for Kasia! Can’t wait for longer TDFF
Well done for covering the women's TdF - very exciting racing !!
Excellent coverage as always! I feel bad for Demi, she was the strongest, but left alone after the crash. This race is a good example to show that cycling is a team sport. Big Kudos to Kasia for her "never give up" attitude...she was cooked at the Glandon but managed to recover and fight back. So a well deserved win for her!
Lanterne Rouge, I can't get enough of your videos
Awesome!
In that scene Rooijakkers said: "wait, I need to catch my breath" Vollering replies "Fuck off (literally these words), we just had a descent!" But Rooijakkers said on Dutch TV that she really was on her limit the entire time. Obviously it was tactical to not pull too much, but she didn't intentionally sandbag.
that's even worse...she is unfit
Demi really said that?
@@anthonylarson7919 Well, compared to Pogacar, pretty much all other professional riders look mega unfit. It is just the way it is when you compare 'mid' pros to the star player
@@anthonylarson7919 She literally came second on l'Alpe d'Huez. Seems pretty fit to me.
Also you could see that she couldn't hold the wheel of Demi in the descent. If you are so anxious you always have to put some efforts to close the gap
Some of the BEST racing vibes I have seen since the Greg Lemond days.
EPIC!!
Thanks for the very informative commentary
Very happy for Kasia, what a win! On the other side of the coin I feel bad for Demi…SD Worx did a fantastic job screwing themselves.
Well done Kasia! 🎉
Nice girls on the podium. Great racing.
Amazing race and great coverage from LR of the TDFF.
Kasia you're the best!
Much respect.
that gilet clip needs to go viral
So slick, saw it live at full speed and it was amazing!
This was a stage where we'll remember where we watched it for years. Decades. Historical.
It really was outstanding
Is it because the talent pool for elite womens cycling is so small that domestiques can do what they want? The treatment of Demi Vollering is tantamount to gross misconduct and in men's cycling that behaviour would potentially make a rider unemployable.
What do you mean? You can debate the tactics and the team actions in the aftermat of the crash were questionable, but everyone rode for Vollering in the mountain stages. They just weren't strong enough to do much.
@@JanneBernards Probably because they got the world's biggest bollocking on the team bus on the day of the crash.
You miss the point here-they DO NOT WANT HER on the podium.
She could've also just tried going faster up the mountain
@@xAudiolith is your brain dumb enough not to understand simple things? She did her best on the mountains. The only difference is that if the team pulled her after the crash(which is the right thing to do since she is the leader in GC that time), she would have save enough time to win GC. I dont know how your little brain works for you not to understand that.
Great work as always!
Wow, excelant explanation👍👍👍
We want a 2-3 week Tour de France for the women!
Exactly.
I don't know if the women's peleton has the depth for that many stages with the same riders, but as an interim measure I think it would be cool to have three 6 or 7 day races in a row and do a cumulative GC for any rider who does all three.
Next year is up to 9 days. After this year's excitement it will creep up a few weeks soon.
Okay then pay the money required to hold such a race.
@@nochancecw ASO said 2 weeks by 2030, same for La Vuelta.
Women's racing, especially at the UCI WorldTour is ON! Watching them race is so refreshing. Same-same for UCI Women's World Cup!!! #LFG
Apparently she was just supremely cooked the whole time (interview on dutch TV)
The commentator on the motorbike also mentioned the DS told her she would work with DV, so that’s consistent with her being cooked. But then to me the DS’s decision to work is a bad one. Go for a win or go home. So now she is 3rd on GC instead of being second. Who cares?
Yet, she had the strength to attack DV with about 2k to go…..
She had a difficult choice...what was she being told by the Team Radio?
Epic!
KAAAASIAAAAA!!1! 1!
I feel so happy for her, finally number one, love it
She only won one stage, the one that Vollering crashed, without her fault. The Yellow Jersey from Poland lost every duel with Vollering in this 2024 tour.
@@blackarrow9072but she still won.
@@blackarrow9072Niewiadoma was unlucky at the Olympics where she was 5th because of crash. Now Dutch girl was unlucky and suddenly everything is not fair 😂😂
Excellent analysis as usual.
These 4 Seconds make the situation after the crash even worse. Whoever made that decision surely must feel bad for Vollering.
Still full credit to Kasia for her insane performance
Kasia overcame all the time bonuses too.

One of the best finishes ever. Wish it had been live on TV.
This finish and the LeMond/Fignon battle are the best.
What a stage
Queen Kasia 😍
while the crash support was AWOL, you're spot on in terms of if Deni didn't wait while 1:38 ahead, she could have took it back.
You're not gonna win a race like that when it comes down to seconds. You have to take your opportunities.
Demi Vollering is just amazing! It's just sad that her team is not supporting her
Great video as ever! Many thanks for excellent highlights and explanations - super exciting racing but needed the maths in this video real time - commentators could have got the 1:05 target if they'd been sharper - no-one seemed to know immediately after the finish.
So her teammates not helping her after the crash cost Vollering
Kasia, you are the best. Congratulations on winning TDF.
Kasia is clearly not the best, but a lucky 2nd. That’s how races go though so congratulations to her.
@@AirwaveMustang She is the best and the general classification results confirm it. Besides, fortune favors the better 😀💪👍
Haha, Demi was better on ITT and on mountains too. Kasia had luck, that Demi had not better teammates. Kasia was not so strong, than Demi, that's the truth.
First crazy ending
