Good lord! I watched this like 7 times! I have only been Wood working a few months, making this seems like acquiring a free round trip ticket to Mars ! I’m going to start a shoebox size version tomorrow with black walnut and Purple Heart. I transcribed every almost every word of this video. 😂 I have about 30 linear feet of material so maybe I’ll get a good one before I’m done! Thanks for sharing !👍
Hi Rob, it takes a true craftsman to be able to give such a complete narrative as they are working and never loose their train of thought, I take my hat off to you. Watching your videos is such a privilege. I don't really need one of these boxes but I am now going to make one anyway, I have already started a shooting board. As to what you do for the vets that has to be greatly admired, I was involved in the conscription for Vietnam here in Australia, we had a lottery system and if your birthday was drawn out by marbles from a barrel you went over. When our soldiers returned home from service crowds went to meet them and actually spat on them, it took years to be recognised by not only the people but the government as well so I know where you are coming from, congratulations for what you are doing.
They deserve so much more than they received. We love our vietnam vets. We have had one Vet from OZ apply and get selected for our program, i wish more would apply.
1:15:30 An old carpenter I worked with several years ago taught me that a brown paper bag is often just abrasive enough to burnish a lacquer finish between coats. I've used a piece of an old paper grocery bag and had very good results.
I am in awe at your skills and precision of work. It seems if you make it it will be your absolute best work with the best tools. The only way! These videos show how I need to start practicing to be able to do something similar. Your work is inspiring.
There are so many rock solid, common sense, tips in this video. Of course I should have been cutting my sides out of one block like that. It's faster, accurate, perfectly matched. Why didn't I think of that - Doh!
I think the thing that is most important is that woodworking is about problem solving. I completely understand why Rob does the purple heart program is because everything we do has curve balls whether it's woodworking or patriotism or life in general. The goal is to take the skills that you have the materials that you have and deal with it as best you can.
Rob i have been a fan of you for about two years since I fond you. I have been woodworking since late 70 's Lately I have been building boxes .Example boxes with spline in the joints for strength and looks ,bandsaw boxes , bird mouth joinery boxes and bowls . I am so tired of regular store bought hinges ,when i found your channel i new i was there. I would love to take your course ,that will not happen because of money . I will get the jig from you to drill the center of a dowel. I will try to make a jig to cut dowels ,I know you have one but it seems to be hard to set up. I am a big fan . Keep it up please .Julien Lamarche.
I always learn a lot from Rob's illuminating training videos. Each is an awesome demonstration of skill, patience and perseverance. What I don't understand, however, is how he could have made these boxes to sell! I can understand making them as gifts for friends and loved ones, or even for personal satisfaction. But even if he made them in batches, from an economic standpoint how could one charge enough to pay for the time of a highly skilled craftsman, the investment in the hand and power tools required, the cost of rent and overhead, and the value of the unique and beautiful hardwoods incorporated in each piece. Amazing.
Have u ever seen what he charges? His lil tiny wooden dovetail markers are 30 bucks.. literally an inch of wood. I’m sure these boxes are at least 160-200 bucks
Good morning Rob. Thank you so much for the incredibly detailed videos on hinge making. I did make my own tools for the dowel and hinge pin. They worked just as yours do. I also made a dowel tool for one of my friends and he wants to do the hinges as well. I directed him to your videos and told him to make sure to watch the whole thing as there is very important details on how everything works. I just went to your online store to check out your dowel drilling fixtures, and directed him with the link there so he could get the drilling tools. Great work from you Rob. You have inspired me to get into the wood hinge as you make it. No other hinge out there even comes close in style or precision. None of them have been attractive to me at all. Your hinge is the definitive hinge, hands down! There is no other. Period! My first attempt was on a live edge wine display box made from worm eaten oak. It goes without saying that cutting the dowel from worm eaten wood was a challenge. Note: Sharper is better. The box came out nice, but every hinge set gets better. Thanks again Rob.
@@RobCosmanWoodworking enjoying the saw... enjoying your videos... love the precision. Thanks again. Oh, and yes, tiny planes glued to paper... excellent.

Amazing work, Rob~! I'm definitely going to pick up this kit to try my hand at this technique. So much nicer than a traditional hinge, be it a small or large box. Thanks for another first class lesson~!!!
Thank you for teaching us how to do this. I am saving up to buy your wood hinge kit. Have you ever done any stabilizing of the wood so that the lid stays flat? I’m talking about putting the wood into a vacuum pot with some hardener or epoxy or something so the air gets sucked out of the wood and the fluid gets drawn into where the air was.
All the way to the end! Thank you for showing the mistakes, or things that weren't planned for. I would not do that to start off with , but if I did it I would start with a thick piece of wood and marke the curve on the sides then plane out the waste wood
I’ve watched a lot of woodworking instructional videos over the past few years. I would rate this one as the best I’ve seen. Rob, the video ran approximately 90 minutes, but in real time, how long did this build take?
Amazingly informative video just like all the others. Thank you! I have a question that I wonder if you can help me with. I am planning flute boxes using these hidden hinges but I want to make them out of a single resawn piece of wood. This means that the box cut groove needs to be stopped at the ends. I therefore have to either cut the end of the groove square with a chisel - I’m not sure my chisel skills would make that look neat enough - or find a way to make the end of outside dowel pieces round to fit the routed profile. Can you give me any advice please about how to do this please? Many thanks. Keith

I know your main audience is from Canada and USA but would livefont assistance with this please kind regards Chris “The Aussie living in the Netherlands “🇳🇿🙏🙏
Instead of knocking the guide piece over 24:24, why not put a couple/few pieces of paper behind the piece to bring the cut to size. That way the stop stays rigid and you can control precisely the amount you want to take off.
Just adding to previous comment. Could you please let me know the part number of the whiteside round nose core box bit you use, I noticed the packet on your bench. ( Possibly #1404) ?
Well I am trying to understand your question. I think you may be referring to the way I am moving the stop, which can be confusing. The best way to visualize it is they key represents the thickness of the saw blade. When you cut the "tails" (The maple) we are referencing on the left side of the blade, then when we cut the "Pin" (Walnut) we are referencing on th eopposite side of the blade and thus the spacer is needed to make that movement
I love your extraordinary and fine work. But I wouldn't plane the Hinge. It looks very fine, if you can see the functionality. Furthermore you can see, where is front an where is rear.

___________________________________ Nice work, but... So I said very nice wood work but small design problem, it is very difficult to catch a card in a box that is exactly the size of the card. You tilt the box, you shake and often a lot of cards fall out at the same time, unless you have a 2-ply bottom. The largest part on the front supports the cards, the back of the width of a finger is less thick, so by pressing on the back of the cards, they rise and you can then grab one without problem. Otherwise, thanks for the carpentry lesson!
There's no doubting your ability to turn even the simplest of things into beautiful works of art Rob, however, when your apron has "My hand tool coach" embroidered onto it and you hear a table saw, a bandsaw, a belt sander and a router whirring away in the background it made your quotation look somewhat hypocritical. Any chance of doing a small project that we can follow along at home where no machining is used in the process?
I have been making the business card size boxes with the wood dowel hinge with the aid of your hinge making tools. Having great success with them with only one seemingly persistent issue...and that is a slight gap between the lid top and the box front. I've checked the top and it is square and not cupped or bowed any. Any suggestions as to what may be causing this issue?
remove a little of the back so the top doesn't meet the back when closed, I found that this helps when the hinge relief cut wasn't quite at the right depth.
@@RobCosmanWoodworking Great - OK. I'll check mine - see if they're flat, not sure which model I have. Still watching lots of your stuff and just started a workbench styled after your beginner bench. Same top and same style base but redwood rather than ply so I can practice some joinery. Really enjoying the process - so thank you.
An American woodworker has also to be a math genius. I have no idea how it would look like if I only see the measurements at 7:52. I wonder if you had to add or multiply measures how you can do it in your head?

Having great success with them with only one seemingly persistent issue...and that is a slight gap between the lid top and the box front. I've checked the top and it is square and not cupped or bowed any. Any suggestions as to what may be causing this issue?
remove a little of the back so the top doesn't meet the back when closed, I found that this helps when the hinge relief cut wasn't quite at the right depth.
Your Bessey clamps - do you manage to keep the plastic covers, glue them on, or not bother with them?
No throw those plastic covers away. Th ebessey tradesmans have flat surfaces, that what you need.
Since I don’t have a bandsaw, and these cuts are so short, can I simply use my Cosman Medium Tenon saw?
Absolutely
Around @7:37 I think everyone should already be convinced Metric is better... hehehe... Jokes aside, great video!
Thanks! 😃 I am to old to switch now
I had a jammer when I seen that walnut offcut go zipping passed your ear like a Slapshot from Zdeno Chara 😬
An American woodworker has also to be a math genius. I have no idea how it would look like if I only see the measurements at 7:52. I wonder if you had to add or multiply measures how you can do it in your head?
Hi Rob 😀 can you review the dmt extra extra fine stone?
I will tell COL Luther to put it on the to do list

How do you take out the business card if the box is sized perfectly.
