Randy is too shy to mention, but he was the owner of New Versity Theater in downtown Palo Alto, CA in 1980s. It showed Indy films, 2 -3 days at a time. Once in a month of so, Michael played a show (and Tuck and Patti did, too). In this video, he's playing at the courtyard (restaurant) but later he played at the theater stage. Michael moved to Mendocino in 1986? I've been to many shows - Doc Watson and Michael Hedges (1982?). Oh Ackerman, de Grassi and Hedges all in one night! Thanks for posting
certain times you can hear a song you have heard many times before and it is as if you heard it for the first time ... such talent and intepretive ability
A few weeks ago I sort of stumbled on Michael playing the Cockburn song 'Wondering where the lions are. On TH-cam. I immediately was deeply touched. I do love his music, his singing, his deep authenticity, his deep connection with every thing he sings and plays. So grateful for discovering this great and alas late talent. (I am also a great fan of Bruce Cockburn. Great talent too.)
Saw him play at a Tibetan relief benefit concert at a high school in CT many years ago. Also there that night was the great dance group Pilobolus. During an intermission, before Michael came on, he was standing in the auditorium lobby by himself. No one recognized him. I walked up and he was really nice. He didn't seem to mind at all that no one recognized him and said he was having a great time watching Pilobolus perform. He then said that the members of Pilobolus mentioned putting a harness on him, connected to bungee chords that would be connected to the ceiling, and they would pull him around and bounce him up and down while he was playing acoustic guitar. He was laughing while he mentioned it. During his set there was a break, the curtains opened, and Michael started playing... bouncing up and down while connected to bungee chords. It was hilarious and he was still amazing on guitar.
It's that connection that created such beauty. Teaching myself piano I can verify it is a force that is real and healing. He is still a complete inspiration. Thank you Randy for these videos and so much joy, peace always
Just when you think you've seen every Michael Hedges live video something like this shows up and it makes your day, your week, your year. Thank you Randy for this upload. You've given me so much and I don't even know you. Thank you
It's amazing watching him in performance, which I never got to do in person. He plays his instruments with his whole body. A light truly went out in the world when he died, but thanks for keeping his creative spirit shining on.
I saw him sometime in the early/mid 80s. By then I'd been playing guitar for between five to ten years and in one night he changed the way I thought about and played the guitar for the rest of my life. So naturally talented and, yes, as others have said he was just a beautiful gentle soul that left us far too early
Thanks again Randy ! You are awesome. Love this performance. Michael isn't scared to change the melody a bit to make it his own. When he hits that high note at 04:04 you know it's not because he can't do it exactly like Stills. Such great pipes on this man, combined with his eccentric sense of rhythm it is a special thing. I miss Mr. Hedges.
As a longtime Hedges fan, he never ceases to amaze me with his ability to play AND sing so incredibly well. can you imagine what he would have done with a looper? take it to the next level, as only Michael can.
+TheSoonerbruce - they really should name a street after him. He literally changed the face of the acoustic guitar forever. And he was a remarkable raconteur and genuinely just plane cool, honest dude.

June 2018 - I got to see Michael live not long before his passing. One of my most favorite musicians. Anything that any of you can post on TH-cam is most appreciated.
I dont comment on video's often, but Michael Hedges deserves the props! Simply amazing talent! I wish I would have discovered his gifts while he was with us! R.I.P.!
Wow just wow. Thank you for posting all these great videos Randy. I was lucky enough to just discover Michael today….. I am a huge music lover and so is my dad who introduced me to pretty much all the music I know from this generation. I texted him a couple of these videos blown away asking why he had never shown me any of this before and was shocked to find out he was just discovering him for the first time from the video I sent. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to experience such a great artist. I have been listening to Michael all day so far and become more and more blown away with each track. Thanks for sharing the music !!!! I feel lucky to have discovered this and will be sharing with all the music lovers I know !
i was honored to see michael perform at the new varsity in palo alto, ca in the early eighties! This cover is brilliant! CSN is my favorite band (love sweet songbird Croz's voice/harmonies!) "He (Michael) was as good at friendship as he was at music, and I miss him every day," David Crosby.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We were there at the New Varsity as teenagers and saw him many times during the summer of 84. A blessing to witness pure genious in person. I can count on one hand how many times I witnessed musical genious.....another was Stevie Rayvon.
I saw him in live many times and thought I had heard most of the cover tunes he did. I've never heard this one before. Thanks for sharing. Outstanding. The audio is really good on this.
Yeah I'm only 20 years old and I live in Australia, but I'm an avid listener of various kinds of older music. My mother especially listens to this kind of stuff, and Crosby Stills Nash and Young - who, as it says in the description of this video, he apparently used to open for. So yeah a little surprised I haven't come across him sooner. I only happened across Michael's music through another video on here a couple days ago - but boy am I glad I've found him.
He was a very nice guy. After seeing him 6 times and positioning myself three seats stage right, He said "are you following me?" He shook my hand and said " how do you always get that same seat? " I said " because I am 6"5" tall and mean as hell!) we both laughed.; almost every one there saw us shake hands. I felt so important and had a tough time getting my head to fit through the EXIT door ; ^)
+dave chalfant He acknowledged me several times to at different venues when we had made eye contact, usually well before the performance time. He was a very nice man with a gentle soul.
First heard him while in Ava Beach. Wow. Love his artistry. One of my all time fav guit box singer / players. Respect Michael! Miss you being here. Dean.
Randy - Here appreciating David Crosby and stumbling on this recording. I’ve heard it before. I was there to discover Michael hedges when you did. And I’m delighted to be reminded that you owned the new varsity. And capturing these performances is just amazing.
I saw him in 1991 when I was working concert security. I had heard some of his music on the radio (NPR show on ambient & new age music as it was called). Everyone in that audience could tell they were experiencing something special that night.
I saw him perform along with Bella Fleck in Ashland, OR. many yrs. ago...a lovely experience. The man was all over the stage, barefoot (as I recall), just being ONE with his guitar & everyone in earshot - it was truly a magical experience. I'd go so far as to say... trippy! The guy was/is a master, no question. He had the Force.
Truly amazing modal cover here. Never thought I would see this, but the proof is in Michael's ringing E harmonics. . . a rare tribute to Stills' unprecedented classic. And thanks to Judy for inspiring the E modal modus wonder!
I know right? He's a legend... and my fav guitarist of all time. Such a brilliant, creative genius... and gone way too soon. I cry every time I hear him play or see his performance. Pure musical joy and precision!
Bad luck. Luckily for me I got to see him 3 times live. The first tine was at a small blues club in Baltimore City, and i was on a balcony very close, right over the front of the stage. He blew me away! My same friend who first told me about Hedges and told me he was playing at that club, also told me when Hedges died in a car accident. I was heart broken.
This is a very difficult song and with no preparation all he pulls it off perfectly just because someone requested out of the audience. I didn’t even know he sang!. I only had a couple of his Wyndham Hills albums. Always thought he was the best of that whole New Age crowd. And heading shoulders above the rest of them.
Not to get weird but sometimes I think spirits like this are too beautiful for this world and they come for awhile and return to a more spiritual reality... ok enough of that but man Michael is the truth!
I believe it is the people who have a love for the truth that will leave a mark in this world an Your not weird just perceiving the real deal God Bless
I have the same thoughts, just a visitor who came to enlighten us for a while. Enlightenment is always something to strive for, otherwise what do we have?
I first saw him on some PBS special, along with several other artists from Windham Hill ( I think that was the name of the recording company ). He was their number 1 guy at the time. Got to see him 'live' in Santa Rosa sometime in the 1990s.

This looks like early eighties. Which I have not actually seen anything before. I am just kinda realizing how much of an influence Joni Mitchell was on him.
✨Michael opened for CSN '92 Acoustic Tour ✨‘He’s probably the acknowledged master of the acoustic guitar in the US at this point, and he’s our friend ~ and we think he’s an incredible musician and his name is Michael Hedges, “ David Crosby. ♡ Stephen Stills would join Michael on stage for 'Gimme Shelter' (The Rolling Stones) AND Michael was a HUGE Neil Young fan, covering many of his songs. ✨ ♡Michael Hedges ♡David Crosby & Graham Nash♡Encores: Helpless + Ohio♡Oct 16, 1991♡The Bottom Line♡NYC => th-cam.com/video/ybGDJiaYWTo/w-d-xo.html
The NVT had two great acts back in the early '80's that went on to be quite successful. One was Micheal Hedges and the other was Tuck & Patty. The New Varsity Theater, as it was known back then, had free music on Saturday nights, if my memory serves me. I loved the Varsity and went there a lot. I saw them both so often back then in the courtyard that I never gave them a thought beyond that they were just local musicians playing at the Varsity. Little did I know. How sad it was that Michael Hedges died at 43. He was a kind and brilliant musician.
Very kind of you Randy. I thank you. I was indeed there, and see it all now as though looking at past pleasant scenes through gauze. University avenue, safe and pleasant, the NVT, the local pubs, great bookstores, restaurants...all gone now I'm guessing, The past lives. The past dies.
Unbelievable. I only just discovered this guy and I feel a little ashamed about it. Such an amazing guitar player and singer - it's amazing that I haven't come across him at an earlier stage in my life. At least I know of him now, must buy some of his stuff.
Ya same for me too. I was too young and had never heard of him once through the 23 years of my life. Found him w.out word of mouth ~6mths ago. Its amazing his name wasn't/isn't out there more. Although I am in and from Central Ny... far east.
I absolutely love it when great artists, and great composers in their own right, do "covers". "Covers" doesn't quite do it, more like what k.d. lang called her album of great Canadian songs... "Hymns of the 49th Parallel".
Oh yeah, “I know ONE Crosby stills and Nash song.” So non chalant. That song is THE ONE! Right after his high note at 4:13 you can see where the song really connects to him personally and he transmits that to us. It’s a little blip but if you are musician that ever plays cover songs you know what I mean.
Randy, wow. I knew Mike and saw him many times, but to be able to shoot this... it would have been a highlight of my life. Thanks for bringing this to us. I will never forget Mike or get over his death. I can only watch and listen in awe.
From the CSN box set (notes under "Black Queen"), Michael said "I got everything I know from Stephen Stills. Those people that thought Clapton was God hadn't heard Stephen Stills play acoustic guitar."
hey man you did a great job either recording each individual song or recording the show then edditing it and posting it on here. much thanks as always. But i cant help but wish i could see these shows in their entirety if you recorded them as thou, with his tunings and talkn in between. even if all the material is posted for each concert, but seperated into one song portions, itd be sweet to experience any of these shows begining to end, kinda feel like your experiencing what the audience did.

great story!
And he was playing Aerial Boundaries while he was flying around above the stage.
DAYY-UMMM… I saw Michael Hedges perform many times -Missed that! I can just imagine it though…
Pure genius. As if the cosmos flows right through his soul and out his instrument.
Agree. He is a genius. It's so obvious.
It's that connection that created such beauty. Teaching myself piano I can verify it is a force that is real and healing.
He is still a complete inspiration.

Not a chance there was no preparation for this. He has played the song before on many occasions and knew this song, it is very nuanced.

Fantastic Artist
Quick tuning @2:45
Suite: Judy Blue Eyes
[Part 1]
[Verse 1]
It's getting to the point where I'm no fun anymore
I am sorry
Sometimes it hurts so badly, I must cry out loud
"I am lonely"
[Chorus]
I am yours, you are mine
You are what you are
You make it hard
[Verse 2]
Remember what we've said and done and felt about each other
Oh baby, have mercy
Don't let the past remind us of what we are not now
I'm not leaving
[Chorus]
I am yours, you are mine
You are what you are
And you make it hard
[Instrumental Bridge]
Tearing yourself away from me now--you are free
I am crying
This does not mean I don't love you--I do, that's forever
Yes and for always
[Chorus]
I am yours, you are mine
You are what you are
You make it hard
[Verse 3]
Something inside is telling me that I've got your secret
Are you still listening?
Fear is the lock and laughter's the key to your heart
And, baby, I love you
[Chorus]
I am yours, you are mine
You are what you are
And you make it hard
you make it hard
you make it hard
you make it hard
[Part 2]
[Instrumental Bridge]
Friday evening, Sunday in the afternoon
What have you got to lose?
Tuesday morning, please be gone, I'm tired of you
What have you got to lose?
Can I tell it like it is?
Listen to me, baby
It's my heart suffering and dying
And that's what I have to lose
[Chorus]
{I've got an answer
I'm going to fly away}
What have I got to lose?
Will you come see me Thursdays and {Saturdays}☺️
What have you got to lose?
[Instrumental Bridge]
[Part 3]
[Verse]
Chestnut brown canary
Ruby throated sparrow
Sing a song, don't be long
Thrill me to the marrow
{Voices of the angels
Ring around the moonlight
Asking me, said she's so free
How can you catch the sparrow?}
Lacy, lilting lyric
Losing love, lamenting
Change my life, make it right
Be my lady
[Part 4]
[Outro]
Do-do-do-do-do, do, do, do-do-do-do
Do-do-do-do-do, do, do, do-do
Do-do-do-do-do, do, do, do-do-do-do
Do-do-do-do-do, do, do, do-do{whistle}
Do-do-do-do-do, do, do, do-do-do-do
Do-do-do-do-do, do, do, do-do
wow- also miss this guy
This looks like early eighties. Which I have not actually seen anything before. I am just kinda realizing how much of an influence Joni Mitchell was on him.
Don't you mean CSN&Y?
@@kingrobert1st You are both right! Joni + CSNY
Michael would later open for CSN ~1990.
Lotta people forget what a boss Joni is on guitar, too
✨Michael opened for CSN '92 Acoustic Tour ✨‘He’s probably the acknowledged master of the acoustic guitar in the US at this point, and he’s our friend ~ and we think he’s an incredible musician and his name is Michael Hedges, “ David Crosby.
Courtyard/lobby music was nightly for tips. Very lucky we were to have Tuck and Patti, and Michael! Glad you were there too!
Singing one of the harmonies.
Very nicely done!
Unbelievable. I only just discovered this guy and I feel a little ashamed about it. Such an amazing guitar player and singer - it's amazing that I haven't come across him at an earlier stage in my life. At least I know of him now, must buy some of his stuff.
Oh Michael, I miss you so much.
He sing good too ...fantastic musician
agreed.
My guitar hero. I miss you michael
I used to go on Thursday nights to see him there. An unbelievable player and a really nice guy. Gone too soon.
bravo bravísimo genial
Just wow.
Randy, i was probably the one who requested a CSN song🤗
🎶Will you come see me Thursdays and🤔 {Fridays}Saturdays ☺️🎶
"you only got 2 dollars!☺️"
Great that you were there!
Doing the work of three men
Tad Somato And 500 overdubs
He always smile❤️
Stills must’ve dug hearing Michael play this.
Excellent.
For always
Oh yeah, “I know ONE Crosby stills and Nash song.” So non chalant. That song is THE ONE! Right after his high note at 4:13 you can see where the song really connects to him personally and he transmits that to us. It’s a little blip but if you are musician that ever plays cover songs you know what I mean.
exzellent!!
Here's a person who lived without fear a put his heart and soul into his craft.
Amazing
R.I.P.
Can someone give the date and venue of this performance? Magnificent..... Stills himself would love it....
Around 1984. The New varsity Theater, Palo Alto, Ca.
i shot it. :)
What year was this?
Sick dude
Randy, wow. I knew Mike and saw him many times, but to be able to shoot this... it would have been a highlight of my life. Thanks for bringing this to us. I will never forget Mike or get over his death. I can only watch and listen in awe.
@@_MrPink_ I was so lucky. He was so special.
@@rlutge He was, indeed. I had a beer with him just before he died.
CS&N could have opened for Michael, too. I would have gone to that show.

When? Awesome, thanks for posting.
wow. legend
From the CSN box set (notes under "Black Queen"), Michael said "I got everything I know from Stephen Stills. Those people that thought Clapton was God hadn't heard Stephen Stills play acoustic guitar."
This is like an epiphany
hey man you did a great job either recording each individual song or recording the show then edditing it and posting it on here. much thanks as always.
