Stephen Stills is a music god........... he IS music.....I love all of CSN, but to me, Stills is the heart...... I never realized how much of their music is not just his voice but his guitar also.......
This music is still with me after more than 50 years. I learned English at school because I wanted to understand this and other American songs. So much beauty in the music and the lyrics.
Stephen Stills has the most beautiful, melodic voices in rock - even today his voice is incomparable. He opens his mouth and the lyrics just soar. When you combine the voices of Graham Nash and David Crosby with his ( yes, and Neil's) ...it's sheer heaven for your ears. Orgasmic.
I can honestly say I only got high on the music, never needed anything else, Jesus kept me happy...but the times still live inside me even now. I was a hippie then and still am now....and still feel the same about this music...it lives inside me....and I love it so much.
I am 51 and try to explain to my 13 year old daughter about the time when music was music and harmony and long ballads were cool..She loves Dave Bowie and Zeppelin so I am winning her over slowly..
That's Joni Mitchell beside him. I agree. Coming of age in the 60-70's was an experience that is hard to explain and like no other, musically and otherwise . Glad that I was there and part of it,
wow! i had not heard stephen go off like that on the acoustic! just a hint at the nearly limitless possibilities the instrument has, in the hands of a master! i am reminded of richie havens, only moreso!

Beautiful music, honest singing, no backup dancers to distract - no need for autotune or computer enhancement. Individually or as a group, CSN&Y were among the best of singer / songwriters from a magical era. Glad that their music was part of the soundtrack of my life -- then and now.
Stephen and the late, awesome Glen Campbell were absolute masters at flatpicking......Rest in eternal peace, David, your voice and music will live on in our hearts forever.
Stephen Stills' voice has always been and always will be my all time favorite; not to mention his incredible guitar playing. So blessed I was able to see these 3 awesome musicians in concert 8 times. I only wish there would have be one more concert tour...but I'm painfully quite certain that is not in the cards. CSN always in my heart and always playing in my home and car 'til I part this Earth!! 💚💚💚💚💚💚
brings back so many memories; 4+20 I first heard on a walkman after getting stoned somewhere in VE during the spring of fresh yr in college and then heard them live that summer in Richmond 1987. nice mix, amazing, thanks
Looks like Joni MItchell sitting to the left and behind Stephen, and David Crosby sitting to her left. I'm really fortunate that I grew up in those times, they were magical and transcendent, and we really all did want peace, and decided to be that, that would be our walk, to the very end.
The Still's guitar solo is amazing. I think I heard a little Andalusian/North African lute channeled within those extraordinary riffs. What an ending... Thanks to the group and to the videographer.
That was FABULOUS. The early clip with Stills singing in obviously a writers circle with the beautiful young Joni Mitchell in the green dress admiring his work. Great post. Thanks.
It was on a special Dick Cavett show broadcast. All the artists went from Woodstock straight to that show. There's other footage showing the conversations with the artists. Joni Mitchell was the o ly one on the show who didn't make it to Woodstock. She was getting a chopper ride over it and thought it would be too hard to make it in. But her view helped her write the song that CSN&Y put out on their Deja Vu album.
Perfection of lyrics and harmony; ageless and timeless. We're lucky to have been around since they formed .... How many roads have we all travelled to be at the place we now are.........
I raced to the front as soon as they opened the doors to a Stills concert in Atlantic City casinos years ago. Got first seat, so close I could put my elbows on the stage. I yelled approvals at each song. At one point I requested "4+20." Stills said, "Oh, that's too sad!" Never played it. But I forgive u, Stephen. One of few rockers who excels at all aspects of the profession; first CSN album was a virtual Stills tour de force, playing all instruments except 🥁 drums, and Nash and Crosby following his lead. Distinct 🎸 guitar style too.
He sad he wrote it at a very depressed time in his life. Yes, but that's what real poets do for us - they write what we also feel, but can't express. He's a gift.
Gloria, I am also a huge Neil young fan , but also love the voice of David Crosby and Graham Nash. Combine Stephen Stills songwriting abilities with his incredible guitar playing , then add his incredible voice and you have an incredible music making machine ! Crosby, Stills and Nash, é lenda.
This guy is one of the truly greatest exponents of the Martin acoustic guitar..his tunings and inventive percussive playing is unlike any other artist....and hes a great singer/songwriter...i mean Suite Judy Blue eyes is a masterpiece of guitar artistry and songwriting...😊
I used to get the same grief, LR. Don't let anyone come between you and the music that moves you. They've been the soundtrack to my soul since I was 9 and the Southern Cross video came out~
Poor Crosby is struggling with liver issues here, I have lost several friends and before the transplant you cannot move much and after it is difficult.. it's a miracle he is still with us.
Total respect for the man for turning himself in, doing what needed to be done, sticking with it, being with his oldest son, having a new one and a decades-old marriage. I don't know many people who could do that.
...and nash was from the hollies, who at the time were making big pop hits in britain. but they didn't particularly like the direction graham nash wanted to go in. so he floated around until he met the laurel canyon group. finally he felt at home and was a genuine genius contribution to the harmony of csn&y.

Stephen Stills is a master on the acoustic. I always loved his voice too. Very unique.
I loved what Hendrix had to say when asked whether Clapton was best on guitar. "Those who would say that, have never heard Stills on acoustic!."

He would often defer compliments and praise to others. He often referred to Teri Kath as the best player.

My first CSN concert was 1987 right after David got out of Fair oaks rehab so glad I got to see them many times over my life
He didn't 'get out of Fair Oaks', he says he escaped. He got straight in prison,
