And extremely melancholy, despite the poppy, catchy tone. Saki Kabata recorded the song a few months after her best friend died in a car crash. So she's singing to him, hoping he'll finish rolling one day and return to her.
oh my god, in two years, Katamari Damacy will be twenty!! It was truly formative for my taste in music when I was a teenager, and it's both fun and scary to look at how much has come since. Lovely video!!
One of my favorite games from my childhood. The soundtrack always puts me back to the childlike wonder I had when playing the game so long ago. Still one of my favorite games today

A wonderful video about a wonderful game. This videos view count may be small now but it will definitely grow bigger and bigger like a Katamari.
I only played Katamari for a few hours when I had a free trial of Xbox Live, but the soundtrack was what jumped out at me most, between the intensity of the opening number, the little etude that plays when the Lord of All Cosmos is bullying you at the start of each level, plus the different pop tracks that play for each level are just so perfect
It's impressive that the soundtrack is so easy to fall in love with, even after just a few hours. It's that gripping of an OST.
Gotta be honest - although the soundtrack is eclectic and varied, I never questioned any of it, just thought it all made perfect sense and was vibing with it. :D For sure one of the most pure and fun video game soundtracks I've listened to. So much joy, and longing, in it.
Katamari Damacy's music really is something special. It's just filled to the brim with wild vibes.
I never played more than a demo of Katamari Damacy, but it's certainly one of those games I wish I had given a chance back in the day. Don't think I've ever seen even gaming magazines/outlets take much of a deep dive into its music despite always being a talking point when it comes up, so it's interesting to see how the music plays into the game's deeper theme.
It's a key part of the game's appeal, I'd say, so I'm glad I could offer a deep dive. Definitely give the game or the series a chance. I can't imagine gaming being how it is today without it.

I've been listening to a lot more video game music lately I'll have to add this one to check out these all sound so refreshing! I also really need to check this game out at some point.
I've loved so many videos that mention it. I just haven't gotten around to. I think I assumed this was an indie even the way it's discussed!
Keita Takahashi's work feels very "indie." It's tough to explain, but he's definitely been an advocate for smaller, more experimental projects in the games industry. Despite being published by Namco, Katamari Damacy has a lot of "indie" sensibilities.

It's wild that I've never played Katamari Damacy but I've listened to soooooo many songs from the soundtrack. I think that helps support the fact that this soundtrack is incredible

ReRoll is an HD remaster of the original PS2 game, so it's a fantastic starting point. We Love Katamari is the best Katamari game, IMO, but it's only on PS2 right now. I'm hoping that someday it gets an HD remaster, but for now, ReRoll is probably the easiest way to experience the series these days.
I'm at this weird point in my life where I'm looking back at all the games i've skipped over the years and wondered if I was truly missing out. Are there games that I really blew it on so I could replay something beloved again? Was there enough out there that I could afford, in good faith, to skip games that looked like they wouldn't suit my wants at the time? Anyways, Katamari is one of those games I think about. By all accounts it doesn't look like i'd enjoy it too much, but evidence suggests otherwise.
There's a non-zero chance that all of us missed SOMEthing in this wide world of games. It very well might have been something cool, so don't hesitate to try something you might have passed on back in the day. You might surprise yourself!

I always envisioned the lyrics having to do with togetherness and unity as part of Katamari Damacy's potentially anti-consumer themes. In other words, it represents a lack of creativity and ingenuity in favor of one gargantuan mass of stuff. Considering how the sequels would continue to have a sense of satire to them, I maintain it's a possibility, but maybe I've just gotten cynical over time.
That's definitely an interesting angle, because We Love Katamari, even though it was directed by Takahashi like the first game, had similar sorts of vibes. People wanted more Katamari, so the second game was all about appeasing avid fans of the first. I still feel like the original game had more optimistic impressions, but once a game gets so much traction and sequels get churned out, that sense of fatigue seems all the more legitimate. Perhaps that perspective is why Takahashi stopped being involved in the series after We Love Katamari. Thanks for the comment! There's a lot to consider there!
And to be clear, I definitely think a more optimistic viewpoint like you bring up is a valid one! I'm kind of using hindsight in my analysis, whereas going at it from 2004 proper definitely has a different feel to it.
The credits theme is the most on the nose proof of all this.
And if you manage to roll up all the countries in that level the king says "finally, there are no more borders".
