I'm not sure how much you have experienced this, but it would be great to hear what you've seen in terms of minorities or people of color in a ballet company.
Sincerely, a person of color 😊

When a dancer/donor uses their position to manipulate the stage, they have lost all respect for the arts.

Kirsten , you have a beautiful , completely even - handed way of presenting this delicate information. You have a gift to help dancers everywhere! Bravo!💐

Excellent video as always Kirsten 💕 I have to say Im not surprised at all. These political games start at the dance school level, with parents manipulating studio owners and teachers. They want their child featured, or they want more privates booked for their dancer, often studio time is scarce. What I find most disturbing is that your "following" can effect your success path. What if you have no following, no social media accounts. That stuff takes alot of time, what if all your time is spent training? Is it going to be a lost cause without a following?

This is one of my favorite videos of yours, though I do love all of them. It's so honest! I agree with you that the favoritism and other political factors are inevitable and it doesn't necessarily mean the people involved are bad people. It's not wrong of them to treat certain dancers well because they are a large source of income. But it becomes wrong when they mistreat the dancers who are not.

I'm kind of frustrated about this and I am not even in a company yet.

Great video! I have a question- I'm in my 30s now, so obviously I'll never be in a company, but I hope to get back into recreational classes someday in the not too distant future. Before I moved, I was dancing ballet recreationally, and although my teacher was kind and did teach me a lot, I never felt like I was really able to communicate my needs and limitations to her properly. For example, I have some hearing loss, particular with low frequency sounds. Sometimes I be told I was consistently missing a queue. I would explain that I couldn't hear it, and ask the teacher to call it out a few times so I could better identify it / figure out a different queue that I could hear, but she never did. What would you recommend doing in a situation like that?

Thanks for your comment, Jenna! I'm glad to hear that you want to get back into ballet too! If you haven't already, I would just recommend going up to the teacher before or after a class and have an honest conversation about how much you really enjoy ballet class and appreciate their teaching, but you need a bit more help with musicality due to hearing loss. Explain what your experience in the moment is like when you can't hear the low tones. As a teacher myself, it really helps when students share with me what it feels like when they are trying to implement a correction, but are having trouble. I'm sure if you explain it that way, they will be able to help much better!

Thanks for sharing the experience. I think these things happen in any professional field, not necessarily just in dance. The problem of being an adult. :-D

Wow. How disheartening. You work your butt off all your life and you finally get a job in a company, and then this political crap decides your career. That is so sad.
