"Imagine living on ₹250 a day, but still struggling for 20% bonus such an unfavorable situation. Darjeeling tea workers face this harsh reality, struggling to survive. Their cries for help go unheard, ignored year after year.
The condition is because the handover of the tea plantation fell into businessmen who just look into their own profit margin rather than the betterment of the tea industry or the local community. Instead of developing regional tea industries, they look for cheaper foreign alternatives. Glad to see a Lincolnite with India Today highlighting the issue.
While Darjeeling police organises Melo Tea festival in chowrasta darjeeling paradoxically they wouldn't allow tea garden labourers to protest in chowrasta, they want protests in tea estates only.
Such great presentation. It's a shame how the workers are getting paid such less wages for the production of a world renowned tea. Please Take care the people of Darjeeling. ❤
Thank you India TV, this means a lot for each and everyone of our Darjeeling people. This is a serious issue and been there for so long and has been exploited by the management. This should not be unseen if India is really a democratic country and we are not begging or demanding it's an ask for what they have been taking from us for generations. My sincere Thanks to the team once again Jai Hind, Jai Gorkha, Gorkhaland!!!
I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude for your coverage on the critical issues faced by the tea workers in Darjeeling, particularly their struggles with the annual bonus, fair minimum wages, and the concept of “Blood Tea.” Your reporting brings much-needed attention to these hardships, highlighting the exploitation many workers endure in the tea industry. By shining a light on these issues, India today is playing a vital role in raising awareness and advocating for justice. Your dedication to such important stories is deeply appreciated. Thank you once again for your meaningful journalism.
Not only Darjeeling, the tea gardens in the whole Dooars and tarai region is suffering. We really suffer financially. The management is corrupt and evil. They don't care. They are depriving us of our basic need in life.
Thank You India Today for highlighting the minimum wage issue which every one has ignored to address... And also sincere thanks for a Very factual report...
What do we get nowadays with 250 per day wage...nothing but just peanuts 🥜😔 fair wage to the tea workers ✊✊✊ 20% bonus is mandatory and should be given to the workers ...Jai Gorkha Jai Hind 🇮🇳
Along with tea companies the state government should also give incentives to these workers who are not just working very hard but are also contributing a lot in the development of tea tourism in Darjeeling which helped state government gain a lot of revenue since time long.
Darjeeling tea is world famous and some well maintained tea can go upto 1lakh rupees per kg. And they pay their workers is like a peanut 🥜 Its just so cruel and horrible to treat them like that, those who profit the company are treated like stray dog . Justice needs to be served
This is a National Issue & the ruling party don't care about the wages that the workers get ,its so low that even a Rickshaw wala makes more money than the tea garden worker...West Bengal Government is a WASTE...
Thankyou India tv for highlighting such vital issue of our people. The people of Darjeeling has always been exploited by the state government in many ways. Please point out in future of our issues regarding jobs being taken over by other communities lack of infrastructure development in the area .
Darjeeling tea Selling in international market in Lakhs BUT tea workers struggling in daily wages of 250/- fixed since decades.....with correlation of 7.2% up GDP and 20% approx inflation. This is serious exploitation after East India Company.
Very Good reporting!! The plight of the Tea Garden workers of Darjeeling has been a never ending saga Every year they come out to protest yet every year they a not given their due. I believe the Supreme Court has fixed a minimum wage yet the poor workers are not granted their due !! It’s Disheartening to know that their hues and cries always fall on deaf ears but the question is until when?!!
Why haven’t there been any interviews done with the owners or the members of the board of these companies ? If they agree to the interview why don’t you bring Mahendra P Lama and Vikram Rai in for an debate as well ?
Thanku india today first tv chenal who talecaste our protect.. Actually our family not got 20 present bonus.. We are only earning per day 250..rupees...how our family survive.. In per month..
I also belong to a tea estate here in dooars in west bengal , our people are not getting their wages properly [currently people have not received one month wage] and also festival bonus they are going for strike once in a week, they do not understand we people are dependent on these tea estate if we say anything they threating us they will shut tea estate . i ask everyone to highlight this thing it is a big issue .
Here they work from 8am to 4pm just for 250rs U can’t imagine how tough is to pluck each and every leaf of the tea Most of the tea pluckers are women’s they pluck upto 60-80 kg just for few incentives 😿 They don’t have medical facilities and many have died coz of heat stroke and high blood pressure U can’t image the pain Big companies are exploiting the poor people for 250 rs while spending millions on luxury brands
It is shame that the ruling party governing GTA not uttering a word for the tea workers. Tea workers have chosen them as their representative s by giving their valuable votes. Tea workers should get 20% bonus this is their right
The downfall of a Darjeeling tea is not bcoz of the nature or the growth of Nepal Tea, Mostly of the Govt. and the Privatised sector Business Plp, Who don't have a knowledge to conserve it. They only know to take advantage of making profit form it.
The indigenous people of the hills are feeling increasingly desperate and abandoned, as leaders across all parties have consistently neglected and exploited our ancestral land."
What use is a heritage if it can't fulfill the basic need of its saviour? It is because of these workers that the tea gardens are a heritage site, also it is because of them that Darjeeling tea is known as the Champagne of teas. If the State and the Centre and the Management can't handle the long pending grievances, how about contacting England or better ask them to manage the tea gardens once again, instead.
Now shut down all tea garden And come make new industry around Darjeeling so every one out here will be satisfied with wages and huge income can be found out here
Cheap Ministaar of Waste Bangaal never bother about the welfare of the people in the Hill. Not even an iota of concern she shows. She only says, "Bangaal bhangte dibona" and expects pepul to bhot for haar😢
In siliguri darjeeling tea price 1000 ₹per kilo as minimum good quality and the workers get only minimum amount so I think the community takeover the tea garden and Manage by their own it is our heritage our blood our land don't give it to outsiders to manage it 99% owner belong to outside Darjeeling . it is very sad to see we the lowerstrata of the society not gates our own rights. When govt failed people took the Rule.
Very Less Knowledge on the recent Tea Graden Status of Darjeeling Tea . This report is just on basis of superficial analysis .... we'll the saying says" Little Knowledge is Dangerous ". Could it be Dangerous for Darjeeling Tea and the Tea Graden Workers ?
This is not Indian tea, though. It's discriminated to be Indian in India. India is too big now. Development and issue doesn't reach to the table of heads. Even it reaches these people doesn't care about the people of Darjeeeling.
Ok it was a part of Nepal but you people don't know that politicians of Darjeeling wrote a letter to Nepal many years ago to take it back but they did not respond . We have no problem with India but what Nepal have does for people of Darjeeling to claim it as your now . What was Nepal and people were doing in 1947 and till now.
Thankyou India TV for highlighting such an issue. This has been going on for years. The living conditions here are pathetic.

Yes you are right if owners are not interested to Modernizing, planning new bushes our garden will not stay for long time.Owners only need profit
Yes people of darjeeling are surviving with every big and little things
20 % is only 50rs more , ₹300 per day is still low ...whereas in neighboring state minimum wage is ₹500 per day
This shows what the WB govt really thinks about us, demerging and absolute autonomy is the only solution.
Here they work from 8am to 4pm just for 250rs
U can’t imagine how tough is to pluck each and every leaf of the tea
Most of the tea pluckers are women’s they pluck upto 60-80 kg just for few incentives 😿

We want justice for Tea worker of Darjeeling…
They should increase the wages
Wage is an issue in India in almost all sector. These labourers get the bitter end the most.
It is shame that the ruling party governing GTA not uttering a word for the tea workers. Tea workers have chosen them as their representative s by giving their valuable votes. Tea workers should get 20% bonus this is their right
Hence we need GORKHALAND 🇮🇳
The downfall of a Darjeeling tea is not bcoz of the nature or the growth of Nepal Tea, Mostly of the Govt. and the Privatised sector Business Plp, Who don't have a knowledge to conserve it. They only know to take advantage of making profit form it.
These poor people every year is the same issue. Do the political parties care.
The indigenous people of the hills are feeling increasingly desperate and abandoned, as leaders across all parties have consistently neglected and exploited our ancestral land."
Make minimum labour wages equal in all states
.THE STATE MUST HELP THE INDUSTRY NOT ONLY TAKE THEIR SHARE OF PROFITS.
If they don't give bonus for workers Darjeeling labours every like this soon tea gardens of Darjeeling may shut down soon.
Nobody highlights the point that the local party that is in power has taken the 4% of the poor peoples bonus.... Take that as a bitter pill to swallow
Now shut down all tea garden
And come make new industry around Darjeeling so every one out here will be satisfied with wages and huge income can be found out here
They just asking for 50 rs more increase in wage 😢
West Bengal is the hub of politics. And tea garden politics is one of them

This is the failure of state government
Tea garden workers should be given their justice because they are the most exploited people of Darjeeling
Stop plugging tea leaves, and do other works, don't let any one to plug,
