After about 28 years playing drums, I find myself more and more drawn to jazz drumming. After getting some solids jazz licks down, the brushes are something I've been struggling with. Good brushwork is something you really have to go looking for. This was a great video with some top notch info! Thank you sir!
Thanks for showing basic techniques of brushes. I started learning drums last year at age 59 and grew up listening to Peanuts music by Vince Guaraldi. I been intrigued and love the sound.
Heck Yeah Russ! I haven’t heard anyone put that out there quite like that, We become responsible for the sustain of notes, I hadn’t quite heard it put like that, that’s a different concept for a drummer who has never been introduced to it!!!
Thanks for that lesson. I've dabbled with the brushes just for personal fun and this has helped me to develop that swing pulse. Thank you so much and take care
sorry to be a hater although the first 5 minutes is a cheesy plug for his weird signature brushes and all things you shouldn't do (there are actually no rules, it's art and theory, anything goes!) and then when he gets into the actual substance it's really hard to follow and understand what the f he's talking about. And yes, the camera should be behind him.
I'm really sorry to say this, but it's just sad as a million of real jazz drummers out there are way better at brushes than this man, with all due respect. After all. Better look out for real jazz drummers if you want to learn the fundamentals of jazz music, better if they're not sponsored, chances are the will play great!
AS YOU SEE IF YOUR A MASTER PLAYER,YOU CAN SEE HIS COMMANDMENTS ARE GOOD HOWEVER, AS FOR HIS PLAYING??????????????????? THAT IS WY YOU SHOULD SEE WHAT I HAVE TO SHOW YOU?.. WHEN YOU PLAY FOR THE BEST IN THE WORLD YOU GOT TO LEARN SOMETHING......HOWEVER DON,T GET ME WRONG HE IS PLAYING BUT NOT A MASTER I ONLY LOOK FOR THE BEST IN THE WORLD OF MUSICIANS ......PHIL AMBROS
+PHIL AMBROS Great players aren't always great teachers, and sometimes teachers aren't masters of performing. The point is, teachers are good at teaching which is what we are watching here.
Russ Miller's resume as a teacher and performer somewhat belies the idea that he is deficient in either role. I've seen Mr Ambros perform, and like the rest of us he has some work to do. Calling out another artist requires that the person doing the unasked for criticising be in a position to demonstrate what he is pointing out. Otherwise the opinion is, for the rest of us, baseless.
Phil I have to concur with what has been said below, Russ' resume is huge, film scores, studio, teaching, live.....he's a great teacher and performer. He may not be my favorite teacher or performer but what he does he does incredibly well. I'm not sure why you would try to hijack his video with your comments, I've watched your videos, and lets just say I'm back watching Russ'........why are the comments turned off on all of your videos?

Man, Russ's touch and feel are superb.

What a helpful video - he makes things very clear to someone who hasn't played with brushes before
That was awesome 👌
Great lesson, but who was the genius that put the overhead angle the opposite of the viewers angle?
It's me. I am that genius.
lol probably russ himself
Something tells me that Russ doesn't spend his time and energy perfecting every detail of videography.
Heck Yeah Russ!

Well done Russ.
so clear and detailed instruction even better than personal lesson
I think this undersells just how subtly awesome and fluid that RH wrist-flick is
🎯That’s where the swing comes in.
Wonderful playing and instructing. Very clean.
thank you for your clear words
Excellent explanation and playing. Very calming.
Top, thanks
Great lesson Russ thanks!
That's some tasty playing and a great lesson

Great demonstration filled with useful knowledge.
Awesome lesson!
Great info. Thanks man !
22 people watched this video, couldn't hang with brush technique, and went back to playing blast beats.
I enjoyed this even though I don't play drums! Thanks!
Great video! Love it!
Thanks Vic!
I'd like to know who Josefine and Christine are, as that's what is written on his arms. Name of his arms? Name of his brushes?
"Ed T H I C C MAN"
Russ, great instructional video, enjoyed it, all the best,
David Curtis Drumming
Amazing video! What a dude! I do wish though that the top camera angle was rotated 180 degrees to save my brain
Andy Maier I thought the same thing. Why make the overhead upside down?
Nice instructions i get the picture thx
Excellent. Ed Thigpen was the greatest!
great! Change of camera perspective would faciltate recapitulation.
Anyone else going crazy over the crooked picture int he background?

THERHYMINGOASIS I like how you knew that was a Chetah Girls CD.

+PHIL AMBROS Anyone who claims to have "mastered" his instrument is delusional. The only time one has nothing to learn is after one has died.
