    finally these thermal pastes tested by a reliable person

  • @TallynTech
    @TallynTech 3 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    Luumi I tested the HY880 vs the GD900 about 6 months ago and I think they are identical thermal pastes... I tested them with 2 different mounts on 8 CPU's: 5960x, 6900K, 8086K, 9900K, 10900K.. Then from Red Team 1800X, 2600, 2700X. Sorry my AMD CPU options were limited at the time but that being said it was interesting that across all of the AMD CPU's the HY vs GD the deltas were within margin of error of only .90 deg being the biggest delta I saw with the averages all very close to being .50 with HY winning 3 and GD winning 5. With the Intel CPU's I saw deltas as big as 1.6 on the 6900K and 1.45 on the 5960X. The rest of the CPU's were all below .6 delta again with HY winning 6 and GD winning 2 but with such small margins that were all pretty much within error. I really feel from the testing, the look, the feel, the smell, the spread, that these pastes have got to be close to 90% the same... the HY had a very slight detectable rubberish smell to it and was maybe 1 or 2 shades darker than the GD but thats all I could see. The HY880 cup was 2 months and 4 days old when tested and the GD was 7 months and 9 days old just to mention as a notable difference.

    I have always bought GD900 since TYC's video, and yeah, they are easy to spread, really cheap and they held well after years.
    I bought a pack of three tubes and after a lot of builds I still have a little left.
    After this video I think I will get another pack of three tubes of standard GD900. Thank you very much for your tests.

    Thanks for the video. The results are very interesting. My personal experience with GD900 was very bad. I used this paste on a 200w test load to repaste in between the MOSFET and the cooler which is basically a computer air cooler. I noticed that the MOSFET was getting very hot but the heatsink was staying relatively cold. The fan was always at maximum speed and the temperature reading of the MOSFET went over the roof. Even the original thermal paste the manufacturer used was miles better. I ended up re pasting with arctic MX4 and the difference was massive. The heatsink would actually get really hot and so it's job. The MOSFET no longer got as hot. So i must've gotten a fake paste. Definitely something to look out for when buying this stuff. Even though i didn't actually test it on a computer the results i got told me everything i needed to know about the paste i received. Went straight into the garbage.

    What I have noticed is that thermal pastes tend to differentiate a lot when the surfaces of the heat source and receiver get uneven. For example it is possible to see huge deviations when using a cooler with direct contact heatpipes. Comparing the same pastes might show ~4-5c different temperatures and if you compare them again between polished plates, they will perform the same. It's all about viscosity at this point I guess.

  • @poyraz8368
    @poyraz8368 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Yes gd-900 is good at very beginning. It performs almost same as mx-4. But as time goes the thermal paste disperse to sides and connection between die and heatsink reduces. GPU die almost gets naked. This is why I do not recommend gd-900 for gpu. But I can recommend it for cpu.

    It’s clear you really understand the subject being able to point out limitations and caveats of the testing done by both you and others which is very helpful and only further proves how reliable you are.

    @ Luumi, I'm Polish so maybe my translation would be some kind of help: the test was on processor overclocked to use 142 tdp - it's maximal approved by manufacter (AMD) ratio. The GD 900 was tested in earlier youtube movie of that author on normal CPU having normal tdp: 65 to about 90 tdp, cause 900 is better in this situation than real overheating. Sorry for any mistakes, hope it helped!

  • @diversost

    I think that the expiration date printed on the thermal pastes may apply more when it is already installed and receives constant heat due to heat dehydration, so I think it should last for years stored without so much problem, always and when it does not lose the appropriate texture.
    Regarding the results of the GD007, which does not have production dates printed, there is a possibility that you have bought a fake thermal paste since it seems like a Chinese national sport to produce fake products, even products that are not even prestigious brands.

    GD900 was quite poor in my laptop (direct die) test, it isn't thick enough. Heatspreader CPU paste tests are so different. Genesis Silicon 850 might be worth a try for a heatspreader CPU, it's quite runny and performed 10 degrees better than Genesis Silicon 800 (Genesis 850 could be a rebrand of Halnziye HY-HP13)

  • @elgoblinooo

    I found something interesting when using gd007 on ryzen 5 5600 processor. U need a lot paste, not too much, not thin spread or small dot in center. But with spread method then add more paste in cpu and then spread it again, make sure the texture like wet dough / cheese cream.
    At my place, it can lower 5 degrees celsius with method i explain above.
    I thought it was margin error but no, i testing again for 3 times to make sure the results was real.

      This has to do with the specific gravity of thermal pastes, gd900 is less viscous, more liquid and spreads very well over an IHS, but leaks to the sides over a die.

    • @CobraPelada
      @CobraPelada 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      gd007 is the opposite, on an IHS it does not perform well, it is very viscous and difficult to apply, but on an exposed die the higher viscosity guarantees better contact with the surface of the heatsink.
