    Wer kennt schon Max Bruch?

    If ever someone had to lay there hands on this wonderful instrument the Cello then it has to be Rostropovich and Jacqueline Du Pre! Such was her greatness she even had the honour to play with Rostropovich in Moscow! But yet for all her greatness her humility and simplicity said it all! Every single note she played was Divine no matter who the Composer was. This rendition of Lol Nidrei by Bruch is simply magnificent and what a soothing way Jacqueline plays enough to make even the stone heartened man weep!
    I am 69 years and I can recognize Jacqueline playing 100 miles away! Just listening to this genius playing makes my heart bleed and fills my eyes with uncontrollable tears! Tears that can never be wiped away! She and the great Rostropovich changed Cello playing for all future generations to come! Jacqueline you have left us devastated by your absence but your memory will live forever! My days are numbered but this much I do know that I will be carrying with me the music of Jacqueline to my final resting place!

    This wonderful cellist made every piece of music that she played sound like it was the first time you had heard it. To die so young and not to be able to play her beloved cello for many years before she died must have been heartbreaking for her. For me the greatest cellist ever and I have heard and seen many throughout my 65 years.

      Touching thoughts. Unfortunately one cannot help thinking about the sad facts of her life as we hear her play. Even though I play the instrument, it is so hard to say who was the best. When I hear Rostropovich, there too I cannot but help to think about his long, but also heroic life.

Bruch displayed a fine art, masterly technique and fantasy, but not Jewish sentiments. It is not a Jewish Kol-Nidre which Bruch composed. @@malcolmkottler9758 Malcolm -- You needn't be so small. That Jacqueline du Pre creates the music that is Bruch's "Kol Nidrei," she painting an evocative musical canvas to the point where she has touched souls with pathos and promise -- so much so, that one hesitates to breathe long after her last diminuendo fades into its own echo -- THAT reflection might have been a more insightful contribution. (As well, it would have been much more congenial.) To "Correct simply because one can", constitutes nothing more than 'editing'." I cannot imagine that to have been your intention. Much better than the chant as sung on Yom Kippur, by Cantor Davis, of Temple Sharrai Tefila, in Far Rockaway New York City. Decades ago. According to legend, Bruch asked a Jewish friend to take him to a service. It must have been Yom Kippur, as Max Bruch heard the chant. He was so impressed that he wrote this great work.

    Few stories are as romantic, tragic and human as Jacqueline du Pré’s. Of course, our tendency to over-romanticize plays into how we see her today, but that should not take away from the astonishing power of her playing.

      Anthony, I agree...

    • @casteretpollux
      @casteretpollux 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a knee jerk response to early death of loved artists. Amy Winehouse, Jean Paul Basquiat, Mozart and so on. Jaqueline du Pré said she didn't want to play cello all the time, didn't like being a star. I think she taught / mentored for some time after she stopped playing. It was desperately sad we lost her because we want more from her. And some people have to have a villain in every life story.

    • @rigmorbirk
      @rigmorbirk 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      And few stories are as tragic and as human as the origin of the Kol Nidrei.

    • @paulwary
      @paulwary 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@casteretpollux Sure, except with du Pre it was more intense. The cello as an instrument instrument and many of the pieces whe made her own are highly emotional, often tragic, much lengthier and meatier than any pop song, and people can invest a lot in listening to them them. She herself seemed ethereal, incandescent, and she was musical genius. So a tragic ending was kind of set up perfectly in peoples minds, like a tragic opera.

    • @casteretpollux
      @casteretpollux 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@paulwary I agree with what you said about her as a performing artist but it in no way cuts across what I wrote, which if you check it out you'll find is factual. I don't think simplistic idealised narratives do justice to the complex and hard working human beings who are artists.

      +Kyle Tomlinson There are many emotional undertones, nuances and great passion, there is solemnity and at the same time great beauty and joy. Joy is not always trumpets and fireworks, this is more subtle, I'm sorry you don't get it.

    • @kyletomlinson5365
      @kyletomlinson5365 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Barrington Salter I can see the interpretation and musicianship being "joyous", but it's a fairly sombre piece... I mean it's mostly minor and Kol Nidrei's historically are not supposed to be "joyous" events.
      Also, no need to say sorry that I don't get it.. Whatever _it_ is. I do not need to be pitied.

    • @bsa18599
      @bsa18599 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Kyle, I was not pitying you, and we know that the prayer is not a particularly joyous event, rather an affirmation of faith during religious persecution. However even music written for a solemn purpose can achieve joy through the music, for example the Gorecki Symphony of Sorrowful Songs. Or Mozart's Lachrymosa, there are many more examples, especially in opera where generally things do not turn out well. Nothing personal, I just disagreed with your opinion which of course is your right to express, but at the same time is not sacrosanct.

    In the annals of concert music, there is not a clearer example of the tragic than the biography of Jacqueline Du Pre, whose indisputably God-given gift was snatched from her, and from us, at the moment of its fullest flowering. The few moments I was able to spend talking with her on the stage of the Hollywood Bowl have consequently taken on for me the attributes of a sacred epiphany, a direct experience of the miraculous nature of life. It is not necessary, however, to have met her to experience such an epiphany, as evidenced in these testimonials; it is instantly available to anyone taking the time to listen to her playing.

      Some people tap things on screen without realizing it. Or they aim for the thumbs up button, and miss, and don't notice. There is ALWAYS going to be a small percentage of thumbs down, not necessarily from people who actually dislike it.

      I think it is fair to say that the orchestral accompaniment is not top notch, there are several intonation and balance problems.
