  • One of my absolute favorite theme parks in Europe is PortAventura Park, which interestingly enough used to be a Universal park! Now not associated with any outside theme park company, this gorgeous park is home to some of Europes best roller coasters, as well as plenty of stunning theming.

      americans think like that.
I mean I've been to the US and we made like a 2 day trip from georgia to south of texas. Texas is bigger than germany and in germany driving like an hour is considered a long trip.
Like where I live I need about 2 hours to get to france, netherlands, belgium or luxemburg. About 3-4 hours to get to the biggest cities in germany. And when you do a trip to any of those countries you plan like for weeks and stay for like 5 days because it is considered to be far away.
Then you are in the US and take a 11 hour driving trip and its like nothing.
I mean every sunday we went to a church a state over, a 40 minute drive.

I went here back in 2018, and this is currently my favorite theme park. I really enjoyed most of the coasters, but I was disappointed by Stampida. I've ridden bigger and better CCI, so that I found it to be forceless. My other real complaint would be the fact that it's impossible to pick your row, unless you have a fast pass. I got middle seats most of the time, especially on Shambahla and Red Force ( I pack PA and Ferrari Land together ) ... My favorite ride here is Dragon Khan, followed by Shambahla and Furius Baco. Last but not least, their bumper cars amazed me ! We had so much space to drive, whereas all cars were occupied ! The theming was obviously cool, especially in Ferrari Land, and I found that the resort is really convenient. Even Disneyland Paris isn't that easy to access ! We stayed in a B&B in Salou, so we just had to walk 10 minutes to get to the park. This also means that you can easily go to a supermarket, a restaurant or a nightclub after your day, so that the whole city is like an extension of the resort. Buses desserve Salou from Barcelona and Tarragona, so you can just take it at the airport. To sum up, I really like this place, and I strongly recommend it.

Long story short, Vivendi/Universal was going through a bad time at some point almost 20 years ago, and made the decision to sell ONE of the actives of Universal Parks & Resorts as a way of saving money. They obviously weren't selling Universal Orlando or Hollywood, so there was only one park left... So they sold it to an spanish bank that a handful of years later sold it to the actual owners, an italian group.
And yes, for quite some time PortAventura was considered the third Universal Park, officialy known as Universal Studios PortAventura; even today you can find old signage such as remanents of the "Universal Express" fast passes at some rides. Nowadays it's the only profitable theme park in Spain, but at that time Universal was in a really bad situation.

Bland, expensive, not a massive variety especially for picky eaters (need more buffet ones that come as part of inclusive)... Adored the rides though!!!! Dying to go back again

Man they really should give you free entries in their parks. Without your channel I still wouldn't have been on taron at phantasialand, without you I wouldnt be planning to go to europa park or efteling and without you I would be at portaventura next week.
You took my fears from (most) rollercoasters. Until recently wild mouse was like my limit but for some reason watching your vids took some of my fears (still afraid of heights though so wont be going on very tall coasters soon) and actually got me interested.
I have been to every coaster in phantasialand except black mamba, dont know if I like my legs without ground underneath lol.
You said that portaventura is the best park and that is why I really wanna go there and you said how awesome efteling is. I got so many coupons from efteling but never considered it because all I knew was movie park germany and that thing sucks.
I have been to disneyland paris and orlando but I was like 8 so dont remember that much from it.

This is definitely on my list for my family. We are in the US (Florida), but my family (2 teens) prefer Europa-Park over even DisneyWorld. Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure is tough to beat. We love, love, love Europa-Park and have been there a couple times. It's very chill, beautiful, fully integrated with the natural surroundings, and now with the newly built hotels in the proximity, makes it even more fun and comfortable. They've done a great job... but there is always room for another amusement park!

Umran Mushtaq hi the unlimited queue jump is about €60 per person but worth every penny and yes there is lots for kids to do. They have your usual rides like a pirate ship and smaller coasters and lots of shows. Plus at the end of the day they do an amazing firework display. Not sure if that is from the day the park opens to the day it closes as we only go in September but every night in September there is an amazing firework display.

As a person whose local park is PortAventura, I always recommend to bring your own food, also, I always bring a bottle of water and refill it inside the bathroom. However the golden rule is to NEVER go on a crowded day, because i've never seen them running 3 trains in my life, and when there aren't much people, ride operators are often cool and let you choose your row or even ride the atraction again without having to go trough the queue (One time i rode shambala 3 times in a row without leaving my seat :D)

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I'm kinda glad that you're releasing the European park reviews now, as opposed to right after your trip. Having them in mid-winter makes the off-season a bit easier to bear, and it's a nice reminder of what you did last summer. I suspect your reviews are more thoughtful for having some distance from the experience, too.

Brian MacDonald i'm glad! Believe it or not, that is exactly why I am releasing them all now. It makes the off season easier, and it also gave me plenty of time to digest everything and think about my experience at each of these parks, so the reviews are the fairest they can be.

It’s not Italy, the zone is called ‘Mediterranea’. It is a representation of a ‘classic’ mediterranean fishing village.
The thing about the fences... It’s about common sense, we don’t think that’s strange. Water fountains are not usually a problem. Food is regular, I agree. Woody is not huge in Spain, they made it the park pet when they where owned by Universal (maybe even before), and they stuck with him.
The thing about using less trains, that’s about the amount of people, I have never felt they are trying to sell more express passes. There’s always 2 or even 3 trains in Dragon Khan in packed days. Great that you loved it. Some of us who have been going to PA since we were a child miss some details that no longer works, especially some FX in atractions.

I just went to PortAventura last week and, for various reasons, I feel like I barely scratched the surface, but I had a great time. I only had one short-ish day there in the middle of a visit to Barcelona, but I definitely could have gone two or three.
To me it had a Busch Gardens-like vibe, and that turns out to be no coincidence--because before Universal, it opened as more or less the European Busch Gardens. Busch Entertainment planned it out and Busch (pre-InBev and SeaWorld) was a co-owner.
The remnants of the Universal era are the Woody Woodpecker branding and the skip-the-line system.
The non-working water fountains, extortionate, wonky ATMs and old-school, coin-operated ride lockers were my least favorite things. Most of the coasters had bins for loose items on the platform, but one that did not was Stampida.
...Actually I want to expand on the locker situation. You NEED cash coming into the park if you want to use the ride lockers. You can rent all-day lockers at the front, but they're not convenient for stashing loose items before a ride. There's a cash exchange desk with a big Woody Woodpecker sign on it right outside the park gate. You'll want to use that because the ATMs in the park may not work for you at all.
But... you will need coins. The ride lockers are 2 euros a pop, take ONLY coins (not cards or bills), and the rental only lasts until you open the locker. It's not a relocatable rental like the ones at Six Flags.
This was the single biggest annoyance for me. I initially thought I was hosed and would not be able to ride anything, but fortunately for most of the rides there are bins.

The negative thing about PortAventura, as you mentioned, is that the whole park is dedicated to make foreigners spend money. I want to stress the "foreigners" thing because they take advantage of them. In Spain we love PortAventura and I'm pretty sure that almost every student has gone there sometime (there's a tradition of going on a trip when you finish high school and pretty much everybody ends up going round Barcelona). So we all know all the tricks they play and that we will be spending our money, so we usually bring some food ("bocadillos") and water bottles so we can refill them at the restrooms. Anyway, this is a highly recommended park and I can tell you that people from Spain really love it hahaha

FUN FACT: All the main coasters have clever and funny themings, up to and including their names. My favourite is Shambala (the Himalayas Expedition Coaster) because the name sounds like something exotic like Shangri-la, but it is actually a play on words: it sounds like "s'embala", which is Catalan for "It speeds up"XD
