Sister, your experience at Tema port will not surprise anyone who's ever done business there. In fact, the extortion doesn't only happen to those of you from the Diaspora; Ghanaian citizens go through the same treatment, if not worse. My advice to those who don't have a trustworthy clearing agent is this -- do door-to-door shipping instead, if possible. For that, you pay the shipper here in the States and wait for your items to be delivered to you at home in Ghana. The mess at the port is not for the faint of heart. Kudos to you for standing your ground and refusing to feed their greed!

You are right...door-to-door shipping is the way to go. I just had a 40 ft container shipped door to door. The only thing I did was tip the guys who off loaded my furniture and put it in my apartment and that was optional...but the decent thing to do.

I am so sick of the BS. The government over there should be ashamed for promoting Ghana.
I am Ghanaian and I cannot begin to tell you the problems I have had with my land over there. Total hell and I have now given up.

Alternatively, for your own piece of mind, choose Door to Door; this way, you will not even need to travel to the port-instead, you can sit in the comfort of your own house and have your items delivered to you.

So so so sorry for this experience! Glad you got everything and you are educating folks! I ship stuff to Ghana every three months, both from the U. S. And from China. I have been doing this for 5 years. I have NEVER gone to Tema Port for anything. Would never go there even if you paid me. As so many people have said, you can do door to door and avoid this. Like everything else you have to do your due diligence on a US shipper who has agents and contacts at the port who will clear the shipment/grease palms whatever and deliver your items to your house or a pick up location in Greater Accra. It may require some trail and error so I advise folks to do a small shipment first like a barrel and see how it goes before you go with larger shipments. I would never advise anybody to go to Tema Port . Both Ghanaian and non Ghanaian.

I ship out of Baltimore, Maryland. I would advise folks, if you are in the East Coast and mid west go to your local African grocery store and ask around and get recommendations. Some shippers even advertise there and leave their business cards. I suspect this is the same case in the West Coast.

Unfortunately you did everything wrong and broadcast on TH-cam what you shouldn't have done.
For personal effects, always use DOOR-TO-DOOR service. The agents would pick up your container from your US house and drop it to your Ghana house, cutting out all the hassle. You don't go to the port.
This is the service you should have used and suggest to your viewers.
Some African Americans do all the wrong things in the process of moving to Ghana. They then go on TH-cam to cry "Scam Ghana" when they face problems.

Danny, there are Ghanaians littered all over the U.S, so why is it that when AAs are traveling to GHANA, GHANA, a foreign country that you've never lived in, they don't bother to ask any Ghanaian, how they ship stuff home to Ghana??!! Simple!! Foreigners all over the world these days ship stuff to their countries every day, and no one goes to the ports to do anything. Going to the port by yourself to clear anything, is such an "ancient" thing!! There are Ghanaian agents in the states, and all over Europe who will ship your items to Ghana, they will pick up the packages from your house, to your Ghana address, literally door-to - door!! This is been around for about 20yrs now, so I don't know how and where u got this idea to deal with all this mess and hassle!! Why didn't u ask any GHANAIAN HOW THEY SHIP ITEMS TO THEIR COUNTRY!! You cannot be traveling to a foreign country, and don't ask anyone from there, for information on how things are done?!!!! Even to South America, Central America, etc., are all doing door-to-door shipping, not just Ghana!!! Do your due dilligence!

Never go there and only deal with your shipper/agent and their network of contacts in the system. The worst I have experienced frankly is when shipping from China and it took the agent almost a month to get the goods cleared through customs......delay after delay after delay but we never had to set foot there and the agent dealt with all the hassles. 2) Get advice and do what Ghanaians who are experienced with the system are doing. Plug in to your local Ghanaian community in the Diaspora and learn how they navigate and who they use, it will save you a lot of time and money and high blood pressure. Reach out to her because you guys can unite together and look out for each other. I Love mirror matching people especially African Americans. I know there's many African Americans in Ghana that's being or have been treated wrong or being scammed. And there's some African Americans there that's not speaking out.

So I found out that the port in Savannah Georgia ( US) and Ghana port are going to be doing business together in imports and exports. If this takes place then this will be a disaster because you know that we don't play when it comes to our money in the United States. This is so disheartening because Ghana wants us to come back home but they're making it impossible for us to do so. They think that we make alot here in America which is not true because the caucasians charge us for land that's ours and make us walk on eggshells, we don't have anything left. We want to move to Ghana to retire with a piece of mind, not be scammed from our own brothers and sisters. Even when buying property there's so much scamming going on. I thank God that I already know someone in Ghana and have been coming there since 2015. Please Ghana we all want to share and build there, you don't have to try and scam us. Dang, it makes me think that you're acting like the caucasians in America. Now, me looking and seeing all the TH-cam videos on scamming in Ghana I'm thinking about just staying at least people will be held accountable for unlawful things they do.

If you are looking to retire with peace of mind, and you are new to Ghana, choose another country.
      For your peace of mind.
There are many hills to die on in developing countries. The Ghanaian ports are not worth the sacrifice..
Ghana, as a country needs to seriously review its right of abode policy with an eye towards repealing the policy.
The country is not prepared at this time..

@@RKArtwork6 A choice of country for retirement requires dud diligence.
It has to align with what one is seeking.
My suggestion would be to look for one that provides most of what one is looking for.
And being able to co firm that first before investing in a place that will not meet those needs and complaining after the fact.
For AA folks, they may be better served retiring in Florida.
