James’ childhood plays a large part in this song. His family was religious to the point of his mother not getting cancer treatment and basically being along by 15-16. He was pulled out of science classes etc.
Thanks for that info. That's definitely something I didn't know about James. Come to think of it, aside from Metallica, I know nothing of James' life. When I was that age I was definitely anti-religion. I'm still not exactly a subscriber, but I can see the potential good that it can bring to life. With that being said, it seems that he and Mustaine had that as a common thread. And, ironically enough, Mustaine came full circle and embraced it in his older years. @AaronAlfeche Thanks for watching and commenting. It is definitely a sad reality how intense and misconstrued some people can take the worlds religions. To be honest, I don't blame the religion, I blame the people. - Ddubs
James was raised largely by his mother, a Christian Scientist, as his father was a truck driver who simply didn't come home one day (and she withheld that from him). She was so devout that she refused cancer treatment and James was left a psuedo-orphan at 16, his father alive but who knows where. So the lyrics fit the mold of being so sheltered and aware of it that rebellion is inevitable.... but on the flip side, the world IS a cruel place and as you said, there was no emplaced healthy coping mechanism. Essentially "You smothered me, but never got around to telling me why or how to deal with that".
I've been a Metallica fan for years, but never had any idea that James experienced this kind of trauma in his life. I certainly had no idea, until doing this video, that this song was in reference to that. We are both appreciative of the commenters education on this one. It shines a light otherwise left dim. Thanks for checking out our video! - Ddubs
Yeah. So many reactors don’t do the research and assume the songs just about a petulant kid whining about mommy and daddy not letting him have a “pony”. It’s about so much more than that. It was a truly traumatic childhood especially after he’s left on his own to fend for himself with no clue to what the world is really about. His music, across the board, is really his lifelong therapy session.
You have to know James' story. His mother basically died because as a Christian Scientist she would not get treatment. James carried that rage for years. Anyone who says it's a whiny kid or no thought went into the writing really doesn't get Metallica. And the drums and guitars sound amazing on the album. Who cares about Newstead on that record? If you saw them on this tour Newstead was a monster.
Yes without the background info we don't know what's going on. That's the essence about reviewing a song that I know nothing about! And just in case it wasn't already very clear, I personally don't get Metallica. Watch more videos of ours to see just how much I don't like and don't get some other music too! -BStar
You are interpreting this song as he is just complaining about rules. James had a horrible childhood. Father left when he was young and mother died shortly after. Grew up an orphan basically
@axeunfury you are totally correct. We are only looking at the lyrics themselves without any context. We went into this without any of that context. Unfortunately, as stand alone lyrics, they do sound like a whiny kid, until the last half or so. Given the context and history, shit, I feel for James. I had absolutely no idea that he went through that experience. Thanks for checking out the video and sharing your thoughts. - Ddubs

The song is entirely about being over sheltered from the world by his parents beliefs.

The back story is very important here.
@kenobivolta We are learning this. People have shared that history and enlightened us. Thanks for checking out the video! - Ddubs
Honor for mother and father should be earned. Not a given

Some people say the lyrics was a goodbye to life letter by the kid. Yeah he committed suicide!
I love you.....b star
Thanks Rodolfo! Lots of people don't get me or don't like me because I'm not that into metal music. -BStar
You guys are looking at this song the wrong way this is about James Hetfield's childhood
Congratulations on sitting through the fastest and heaviest metallic song ever.
Even you couldn’t resist banging your head after the solo
