  • Hi, friend! My name is Han, and I am an engineering graduate from Columbia University. In this video, I discuss the negative effects of boredom as an academic emotion on our school and learning experience. I share two research papers that explore ways to reduce boredom while studying, aiming to improve the studying experience and achieve better grades. I understand the challenges that come with boredom in a school setting, so I hope this video can be motivating and helpful if you are currently struggling:)

I think the secret to having fun while studying is to find the perfect balance between intrinsic and external motivation. Rewards like a nice environment, a drink, having peers to study with, fun plans after, wanting to get good marks for a certain future helps one finish work. And factors like having a genuine interest in the subject, watching yourself improve slowly helps actually like what you’re doing. With both you will definitely enjoy studying!

Exactly! It sounds stupid but ever since I started going to my local cafe and grabbing a nice drink to have while studying, then doing something I was looking forward to after finishing really set up a healthy reward/dopamine system. Its crazy how much intrinsic motivations, like a nice studying conditions, can change your mindset completely

I was lucky to find an activity that actually helps me to stay focused when the lecture is too slow/ too easy - drawing. I can still hear the teacher, but since I have something to focus on I am overall more concentrated and I don't start to daydream, which is otherwise super hard for me. And plus I'm feeling like I'm not wasting time but that I'm actually learning something and getting better at something while staying in touch with the subject.

Literally did that today. Not on purpose though, my first class was a rather boring, useless one (i mean it when i say it’s useless). And i had a deadline today, one of the things i still needed to do is to make a drawing of one of my designs. So i just drew during the class, the teacher never stopped me, even though they didn’t know about the deadline. And it was glaringly obvious btw, we draw on A3 paper. I both got all of my stuff done for the deadline (somehow) and i actually participated and listened. Usually i just get pissy and bored

Great video! I often find myself falling victim of the trap of assuming my upcoming study/review sessions will be boring before it even begins, even though I am fascinated by and adore most areas within mathematics and physics. And as someone who is pursuing higher-level-studies, that is certainly not sustainable. Thank you for presenting some of the important insights that can be gathered from these studies, and showing how it can be applied in pursuing academics!

What's helped me stay alert and not bored has been doing periodic mindfulness meditations between studying or throughout the day, even if for 5 minutes. It helps to escape the expectations and worries. I use books like 30 Days to Reduce Stress by Harper Daniels, has nice mindfulness meditations in it.

Love this - the mere expectation of something being boring to us sets us up for a 10 times more boring experience than it actually is. Reframe your mindset - every subject is your new fave (even if it isn’t actually your fave, even if it’s boring). That way your brain finds ways to make it fun. 🎉

But I used the cognitive approach(did not know it was a thing and I was already implementing it before watching the video!) and it was sooo helpful that everyone else was found sleeping and I was the only one answering her questions and getting a 25 on 25 in the test. btw sharing this video to al my comrades! thanks gurl!

I mean if you don't like something. keep it could be difficult. you should just follow your heart and intuition. there is really no need to focus you self to love what the f teacher is trying to taught you. it is a self protection system to prevent you from wasting time and energy on these stuff that doesn't deserve your attention.

Okie, This is for you,Read this message until the end, it’s adorable. I sent an angel to watch over you last night, but it came back. When I asked “why?” the angel said “Angels don’t watch over angels”. Twenty angels are in your world. Ten of them are sleeping, nine of them are playing, and one is reading this message. God has seen you struggling with some things, and God says “it’s over.” A blessing is coming your way. If you believe in God, send this to fourteen friends, including me. If I don’t get it back,I guess I’m not one of them. As soon as you get five replies, someone you love will quietly surprise you... Not joking. Pass this message on. Please don’t ignore it. You are being tested and god is going to fix two big things tonight in your favour. If you believe in God, drop everything and pass it on. TOMORROW Will Be The Best Day Of Your Life. DON’T BREAK THIS CHAIN. SEND IT TO FOURTEEN FRIENDS IN TEN MINUTES IT’S NOT THAT HARD. NO GROUP CHATS. (I have no idea why i am doing this)

Why can't you just get straight to the point instead if telling information which we will never use 😑
