  • Jerry Jeff Walker & David Bromberg perform together in Austin, Texas on 2-27-87, as broadcast in stereo on public television.
BetaGems are culled from an archive of over 1000 beta video tapes recorded from 1983 into the 1990s. Most feature live music performances broadcast on television in San Diego CA, though there are also rarely seen commercials, comedy clips, and other material that doesn't seem to be anywhere else on TH-cam or online. Most of the tapes were recorded on a Sony SL-HFT7 Super Beta Theater Hi-Fi Stereo - the same model was refurbished and is being used for these digital transfers and uploads.
In rare occasions where a BetaGems clip does appear elsewhere, we're only uploading if our own beta master is better quality or contains material not seen previously. Much footage comes from public television and public access broadcasts that the taper, who worked for a local cable TV production company in the 1980s, monitored nightly for several years. Some of the programming is strictly regional, mostly from the San Diego area.

What a gem of a clip. David Bromberg's personal take on this classic tune is also brilliant.

Too bad you didnt see the other clip of this performance thats been taken off youtube. It was of high quality. Audio and visual was superb and JJ introduces the song and tells the story of he and DB going up to the radio station to sing it for the first time.. This video is so poor in comparison. Its good we at least have this as there arent that many videos of JJ around.

@@barbarafawns1005 Given the length of Jerry Jeff's career, and life, I am always disappointed that there is next to nothing of his very numerous concerts and live performances.
Yes, there's a certain amount from the Austin City Limits shows, but these are really so old and don't feature all his great songs, whether originals or covers.
Simply contrast this with the wide array of live concerts performed by his longtime friend, Jimmy Buffett.

I heard Jerry Jeff perform this brilliant song of his in the early seventies in a gymnasium at a small college in Ohio. He was seated on a small platform & the rest of us sat on the floor, a wonderful experience I will never forget.

This video was up on youtube before Beta Clips put it up. The other clip had much better lighting, camera work, wasnt grainy and lacked the crappy script and audio we're blessed with at the beginning of this performance. The other clip of this performance is now off youtube and if you think this video is excellent, you should have seen the other one. It was top notch and the best video of Jerry Jerry Ive ever seen. Seeing this is such a disappointment.
