I wish Ilya Kaler had been my teacher !! He IS such an EXCELLENT player / musician , and at same time (what is not the case with many other violinists ) really able to Teach out his skills ! I love his humbleness , showed by the way he does not act as if his opinion is the only one that matters ! .............RESPECT comes to Ilya kaler IMMEDIATELY ! He is so authentic ! NO vainness /show off etc he does NOT need to !!

I liked the way Ilya Kaler ran the masterclass, particularly letting the student play for enough time at the beginning. Kaler made many good suggestions and in seeing him demonstrate on the violin and listening to his musical comments, I can see why some, may years ago, considered him amongst the very best of violinists in the world. Apparently circumstances, and I have heard of rumored personality clashes, didn't derail his career but may have caused him to have not as much prominence of others of his generation. It was a pleasure to see and hear him and I liked how he treated others with genuine respect that sometimes is lacking in these masterclasses. Bravo to all.

Oh, this makes me want to return to my student days! 😍
This masterclass was enthralling, exactly like it was studying with my beloved teacher, Lorand Fenyves, who Mr. Kaler seemed to channel in every word, demonstration, play-along orchestral accompaniment, respect and knowledge for the score and composer’s wishes, and even in his graciousness. I have newfound respect for Mr. Kaler. 🤩
What a wonderful artist, violinist, and teacher. I will be taking this as inspiration for my own playing and teaching!

My first CD purchase was one of Ilya Kaler playing Ysaye. He was a huge inspiration to me playing the violin seriously (in a time when I almost gave up!) I had no idea idea that the violin could make such wonderful sounds.... I simply plodded along with my lower-level Suzuki books... didn't find them wonderful at all.
After listening to his CD I was opened up to a whole new world of sounds made possible by the violin [and the great player that is Mr Kaler!]
I never thought I would see him giving a masterclass... that thought never crossed my mind. I did by the CD before TH-cam existed however ;)

I'm convinced that the shoulder rests kill a lot of the tone...

And so did Heifetz and many others too. It might explain why they all sound the same nowadays.
