Why not metric...like everything else in the world? I love these racks (and have had five over the years), but the only reason I even keep SAE Allen wrenches is for use on my 1UpUSA racks.
That's a great question. Aside from Reagan abolishing the Metric Board in 1982... we've spec'd SAE starting in the early 2000's since we're an American made product. We have considered moving to metric to align with the bike world, but in the end, it would require a lot of logistics to make the switch with over 20 years of serviceable racks in the field.
@@1upusa608 regardless still the best rack on the market. Had one rear ended (without bike) and was able to repair. The second one was a replacement after a car slammed into my garage and destroyed it among other items. Made fire pokers out of the bend arms for myself and some friends!
I have Equip-D Double w/ 2 extensions - awesome, love it. I did have an issue w/ one of the arms squeaking real bad and the cam locking mechanism seeming to "pop" or slip backward when pushing opposite side arm closed. 1Up promptly got back to me w/ illustrated suggestion of loosening a particular bolt (on bent arm, above glide bar) to relieve tension on the cam locking mechanism and that seemed to help. Dry lube on the pivots is new info, I'll give that a shot also. Main thing I've found is just keeping the rack clean and checking the bolts from time to time. NO PLASTIC RACKS - go 1Up USA and be happy....
I love that you can share something of value in only 1:45. Thanks for sharing! I have had new serrated bars sitting in my garage for years because I can't get the old bolts out (eletrolyis?) Any pointers to getting them out? I'm thinking I'll need a machine shop at this point.
Most likely it is the countersink that is seized. Inserting a straight hex bit and hitting with a hammer may free it up. Otherwise, you'll likely need to drill out the head so you can back out the bolt. Let us know if you need more help!
I had this happen. I was able to hammer in a larger size torx bit (T40 in my particular case) and used a breaker bar to break the bolt free. I also used PB blaster prior to stripping the hex bolt to begin with.
Thanks for this. I have three. One thing I noticed- the new racks do not include the thin black plastic washers anymore. How or where can I get some? They seem to help prevent wear.
I can barely get the black bar lifted. Seems you need to put a lot of force exactly in the center of the bar and apply a LOT of pressure against a spring. How can this be safely adjusted to make it easier, 1UP?
Thanks for the Shop Talk Series! I have an Equip-D Double rack and the blue pull handle has become loose and spins. I have tried all of my bike wrenches with no luck. What specific wrench size do I need to tighten it back up? Thanks!
Are replacement bolts available? I have taken my rack fully apart to deal with corrosion after a couple tough winters and ended up stripping out some bolts. Would love to see some torx bit metric fasteners with antisieze applied to the threads after the experience of having taken this rack apart with 2--3 years of use in the salty midwest.
Thank you for this. Mine started to have a knocking sound when loaded. It is not the hitch connection but it is something in the 1UP rack which I cannot figure out yet.
We'd suggest running through all the nuts and bolts to make sure everything is snug. If that doesn't take care of it, give our customer service team a shout and they should be able to help you out!
Yep! For skinnier wheels, you can add our Wheel Saver which will help reduce any unwanted movement. But as long as the tire fits between the bent arms, they will work! www.1up-usa.com/product/wheel-saver/
@@1upusa608 awesome! you guys rock! I live in Ontario and I keep my bike rack on all year round so I absolutely love the all aluminum bike rack. I get asked by people all the time who makes that?
th-cam.com/video/i8gR4qkZp7g/w-d-xo.html Yup! My button head sheared off apparently from self tightening. I had assumed it was squeaking and a little sticky due to dust buildup in the pivot.
I had the sticky lever. video 1:05 in fixed it. Thank you for this solve and relief from my frustration. Love the 1UP rack!
This was actually a great video for a couple things I wouldn’t have known and can use. Thanks.
Mission accomplished!
boy, this was timely!!! Thanks as I needed to know THIS information
One thing i do to preserve the teeth. I hold up on the red anodized lever when i am moving the tire arm.
Wax based lube has worked really well on my pivots and seems to last.

Agreed, since no modern bike has standard fasteners. I have a pouch of tools for the rack I keep tucked away in the vehicle.

I have the equip D double and Love it. It’s super sturdy, and yes I had to loosen that bolt on one arm and tighten the other , great tips.

How long does the paint last on the black color racks?
How to get the black bar you pull to drop and raise the rack to free up. Mine sticks especially on one side.

I’m glad you guys didn’t come out with a Bronze/gold anodized kit. I would have had to buy it to match my OB wilderness accent colors.

Best rack on the market hands down
What size bolt is that at the pivot point mines getting rusty and I wanted to replace it
Hi there, assuming you mean the hex bolt at the pivot point of the arm and the tray, that would be 5/16-18 x 4.5".
I have the wide tire inserts in one of my racks. Is it okay to put a normal width tire bike in there?
Yes, all my spacers are for fat bikes and I've used them with 23c road bike tires to to 5" fat tires and they work just fine.
