I was in Mogadishu in 1993 during United Nations operations to stabilize the country and protect NGO feeding operations. I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to travel to Baidoa, Jamaame, Kismayo, Dusa Marreb and Gallkayo. Sadly, the country was devastated by civil war during that period, yet the Somalis were sincere, caring and very welcoming. The culture and the countryside were breath-taking. For me, it was the people that made the country so memorable. I still have the carvings and baskets given to me by Somali friends when I departed. I recognize some of the landmarks in the video and am happy to see that life has returned to normal. asalaamu calaykum asxaabta waxaan rajeynayaa inaan mar kale karno
I am not sure if I would ever have the opportunity to return, but if I could, I think it would be a very emotional experience. When I was there I stayed in an old manufacturing compound at the intersection of Jalle Siad Road and 23 October Road, in the northwest part of the city. I believe the area was called Widajir. I traveled frequently to feeding centers and an orphanage in Afgooye. I was part of a military unit that delivered food, water and fuel all around the country, and our engineers built and repaired roads and helped repair the New Port area. It was a grand adventure and the work we did was fulfilling but it was also dangerous as our convoys were periodically ambushed and our compound attacked by men allied with Mohamed Farah Aideed’s Somali National Alliance. I was very happy to find your TH-cam video because it highlights the goodness of Somalia and the Somali people. I taught English classes for our Somali contract workers because they wanted to learn and in return they taught me the basics of the Somali language and the history of the country. Some even taught me a little bit of Russian from the period when Russia operated factories there. I remember there was an old Russian tank factory on 28 October Road not far from the University of Mogadishu.
Wow it was so long ago. I remember when I was a toddler my family had to escape the civil war after the USA invaded Somalia it has been a harrowing experience. I hope one day you will visit again. I've since been there 4 times and things have certainly changed. I know you would be welcomed back. God Bless you friend ❤
