Simple solution for those "don't touch it" screws on the mak-newtonian, simply change the screw type for a hexagonal or another standard, so it's clear to the user which screws are which and they don't accidentally go to the wrong one. So much great engineering on an equipment like this, hard to understand why this was not thought of. Hope you guys can still change it in the future. Great presentation, really informative.

I have a Skymax 150. Gives extra light grasp relative to my outstanding 80 and 102 mm Stellarvue refractors. It also renders great pinpoint images rivaling my refractors. Also a great match for my Celestron AVX GEM mount and Discmounts DM-4 alt-as mount. Though the stock Sky-Watcher focuser worked well, I replaced it with a FeatherTouch dual speed focuser for the advantages provided. It required a rotatable extension to permit rotation of diagonal on a GEM. Great set-up!

50:35 In the future, you should consider painting the secondary collimation screws a different color, like maybe white.

Just purchased the 180. It beats out my 16 in ES dob and 120 Evostar on the moon, and they’re both excellent. Amazingly crisp and contrasty. I have awful astigmatism in my viewing eye and the long focal length of this scope allows me to see the stars as round and not those crazy seagull v shapes. The 21mm Ethos is extraordinary in this scope. Very pleased with this scope.

Folks this is an amazing optical telescope But there is a massive flaw in the dovetail attachment it is only attached to the scope with 2 tiny screws. Imagine this you have spent £1000 on a scope you have a rock-solid tripod you attach it to a piece of metal That is held on to the scope of your dreams with basically a few grub screws?

I’m doing long exposure AP with my 180 and it works very well with OAG and 2600MM. Stable mount is a must at 2700mm FL, EQ 6-r does well. Binning 3x3 for .9”/px resolution which is probably more than the seeing can support. 4x4 is probably sufficient for 600s subs.

Late to the party here, but please: I've heard that there's a slight build quality improvement on your 127, 150 and 180 maks over the smaller 90 and 102. Is this true? Perhaps this pertains only to those issued with the AZ GTi mount. Thanks, Michael

Isn't the 2 screws that connects vixen dovetail to the mak 180 tube too tiny? I mean won't they break one day?

    • @stinkyfungus
      @stinkyfungus 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No.
What size are they? "small" is not an adequate descriptor.
Standard dovetail mount screws are usually 1/4" 20 or 6mm
Those are good to sheer loads in excess of 225 kilos.
My skymaster mak is in transit... so I can't check what all the fuss is about regarding screw size
But let's say... they cheap out and use M4 screws.
M4 is a pretty "small" machine screw... but they can withstand sheer loads of 150kg minimum...
And you have TWO of them so....
How much fastener do you really need for a 14.5 pound load? (Using weight of the 150 skymaster here)
It's a static load for the most part, you should NEVER be putting a couple hundred pounds of force into your scope and mount.
It's about as nit picky as some of the amateur astromers (that arent super petite women) that think a 30 pound instrument is "heavy"
      I wouldn't worry about it...

Just watched this video since I am in the market for a Skymax 102/127. Is there a decent Altazimuth with manual controls that will fit well with the 127MM? I'm looking for a viewing rig that I can, for the most, part keep in the car for quick, impromptu viewing on my way in or home from work.

Raw materials are extremely difficult to acquire right now. This is not just our industry but also the auto and camera industries as well. Material to make electronic boards and material for glass has become hard to source. Because of this is affects the entire chain. On top of all this there is also a boom in interest for astronomy equipment. So between a massive serge of in demand, plus materials being hard to source, it causes supply issues. If you are looking for product it is best place the order for it and just wait.
