So many things about this performance are worthy of praise, Like Shin's ability to allow himself to be vulnerable when he sings. But what stands out as much is the manner in which Shin and Jae Il play a duet, bouncing the focus between the voice and the piano. Put another, perhaps better way, Jae Il is a genius at sliding the piano into the spaces between Shins's phrases while he's singing. And they both know when a few moments of silence is the most powerful music there is. On a site where this was posted in Korean, I made the only English comment. I was so impressed by the polite behavior of the audience, no noise, no squirming, pure attention. A Korean woman who was there that night wrote back to me and explained everything that happened before this performance. This rendering of Wildflower was PHS's 4th attempt to deliver the song. The first 3 times he broke down and was unable to finish it. I hope someday you will read this comment, and the one I posted under Your Song (Sound of Winter). This is not, repeat NOT a love song per se. Yes, his heart is broken from a relationship, the relationship he thought he had with his management company. They created such a heavy schedule for him that he eventually collapsed onstage and was unable to sing for a long time due to spasmatic dysphonia, i.e. paralysis of his vocal chords. Several years of treatment and speech therapy did finally bring back his ability to talk and sing. (Most people never recover those abilities.) The management company had the audacity to sue him for breach of contract, never mind that it was their fault he couldn't complete the contract. A corrupt judge ruled in their favor, and Shin had to sell his house and car to pay them off. He quit the music business and planned to never perform again. Around that same time, as lbrounen has reminded us below, he lost a close friend to suicide. (There's your love.) He later was able to escape his misery by enlisting in the army to perform his required service as all Korean men must do. And in the army, he met Jong Jae Il, who had no desire to work with him because he was too mainstream, while Jae Il's music at that time was indecipherable. Obviously, they overcame that. 🙂Over the years they appear to have developed an almost psychic connection. They don't always agree, but when they disagree, they don't become loud, mean or aggressive. They get quieter and leave long pauses while deciding what to say. (We could learn a lot from Asians.) Writing this song was no doubt therapeutic for Shin, but it did not fully heal the pain. It's poetically written, but, one last time, not a romantic love song. Everyone knows what the song is about. Every time it's performed it serves as an open courtroom, revealing the company's lack of integrity and their near destruction of Park Hyo Shin. And every singer in Korea has done this song at one time or another, including Jungkook of BTS. So the company is re-tried over and over and over. Had they treated PHS fairly, they would have ended up with a superstar on their hands.
A wonderful performance by Park Hyo Shin. As you could tell, this is a very meaningful song to him (as someone already explained in the comments). There is a beautiful cover of this song by Sohyang and Min Woohyuk.
When I watched this for the first time, I could not help myself watching it several times in a row. This song was a great hit when it was released after Hyoshin had to take a couple of years hiatus due to a health issue with his voice. His company sued him for not being able to fulfil a brutal work schedule. He had to sell his house as a result of it. He decided to do military service to fill the hiatus. A good friend committed suicide at the time. So this song brings him back to that period of great sorrow. The composer and pianist also wrote the music for the Oscar winning movie Parasite.
I learned about Park from a commenter. I had written that the only singer who has moved me to tears was Dimash. This commenter took offense, but at least she sent me this link. And so now I know of 3: Dimash, Hua Chen Yu, and Park :)
In terms of the lyrics. The first thought was about a girl, but It hasnt been clear who he was referring to but one thing we all know that it was about his life. There were quite a few things that happened that people speculated the song is about. A dear friend committed suicide, he also had numerous issues with agencies which really hurt him. His childhood wasnt also easy. This song was very special to him and he struggles to control his emotions everytime he sings it. I personally dont think it had to do with a woman .. it was much more than that.
This performance was on a TV show that he had been on seven years prior. The host begged him to come back, as he NEVER does TV anymore. He got the whole hour and a half. He was releasing his seventh album I Am a Dreamer, which was his first out of the military ( and actually hus latest as weve been waiting for #8 for years) and thus album represented a new ainging style. A new management agency. A new beginning.

Thank you for sharing the story behind the song
I think he had hit absolute bottom when he wrote this. Somewhere I read he said he cried on the floor in the barracks bathroom and wrote it.
Thanks! 💚💗 Park Hyo-shin ~Love It
