    There are two sets of people in this world, first group they have a massive amount of knowledge, but, they cant relay that knowledge to others in a understandable way.
    You then have the second group, they have the knowledge and they can relay every step of what they do and why and how they do things, you can listen to them all day long and learn so much.
    I have never met you in my life , but i can tell that you are the prime example of the second group, i could happily listen to what you say all day long and it would be an absolute pleasure.
    Great work as always, i really hope your channel takes off with big numbers because your content is superb, how you talk is great.

    You certainly know your way when you drive those pegs in; wonder if you break one once in a while. This not an overkill project, just remember how our ancesters did theirs; they lasted for hundreds of years. This is a remarquable job you do.

    Building a cabin is a great undertaking especially for a father and son in a life time of Happy memories.
    Question: would it be easier to put down some #2 gravel on the base of your cabin all the way and around and when just the skeleton structure is being stood up?.. even if the mini tractor is coming and going placing the framing in their proper places.. the gravel keep the mud base from becoming a puddle.
    Stay safe and Warm.. GOD BLESS

    • @SmokyMountainOutpost
      @SmokyMountainOutpost  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure. The underside will also get a wall to lay rock to up to the floor level from the footer. A thick plastic barrier will lay down on the dirt under the cabin. Crawling on ones knees in a utility space such as this could be uncomfortable with rock. I plan on smoothing the dirt out once it gets dry more toward spring and before I enclose it with siding.

    I have heard other people refer to that Pine kindling your using to start the fire as "FatWood", enjoyed your video, good content ........

    • @SmokyMountainOutpost
      @SmokyMountainOutpost  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it is fatwood. The wood portion with the red interior or the rosin accumulated within the wood grain is the fatwood. The sticky solid portion in a chunk that has no wood, but oozed out of the tree is called rosin. In liquid state it becomes resin.

      @@SmokyMountainOutpost Every time I go to Perry Fl. I come back with a 5 gal bucket of fatwood all cut into 3 inch X 1/2 pieces the pine forests are grown to make turpentine and the wood all looks like it is crystallized from so much resin best I have ever found

    Why are we not using Knee Braces in this Timber Frame construction project?? And shouldn't there be some protection from moisture beneath the wood posts??

    • @SmokyMountainOutpost
      @SmokyMountainOutpost  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have addressed these questions in other videos. The bracing hasn’t been put in yet. I have some cut. I have to use help when it’s available. And, aluminum has been ordered for the post.

  • @gary24752
    @gary24752 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Are you depending on the tenon alone at the connection to take the load or is there a seat for the beam? If it is just the tenon then is not the beam's strength only worth the cross section of the tennon and not the beam.

    • @SmokyMountainOutpost
      @SmokyMountainOutpost  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No shoulder joint. Knee wall going in underneath the floor beam (rock wall) and stick frame between post. Don’t really see the need and the extra work. Thought about it but decided against it. Thanks for commenting. I do learn from the comments. After all, there is no way to know everything.

    where's the waterproofing?

    • @SmokyMountainOutpost
      @SmokyMountainOutpost  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many cultures have used wood burning as waterproofing and bug retardant for centuries. I decided to use it on this cabin build as well. It is not completed, so I haven't gotten to the point of a clear sealant yet. So, in essence my cabin will end up doubly protected. Others have used only the burn technique and find it adequate enough. I think it also looks better than a stain prior to treatment. You?

    • @SmokyMountainOutpost
      @SmokyMountainOutpost  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Многе културе су вековима користиле сагоревање дрвета као хидроизолацију и ретардант за грешке. Одлучио сам да је искористим и на овој кабини. Није завршен, тако да још нисам стигао до тачке чистог заптивача. Дакле, у суштини ће моја кабина завршити двоструко заштићена. Други су користили само технику опекотина и сматрају је довољно адекватном. Мислим да такође изгледа боље од мрље пре третмана. Ти?
