Very interesting and well filmed piece. Not one yachtsman who watched this hasn't been in a similar situation. Hunters are motirising their yachts now....
I wonder what that long piece of wood on the port side is called as it might have been handy to do a bit of punting with. Sailed quite a few times on the Broads hiring a cabin yacht and am surprised at how few use their jib to help them manoeuver. Next time they might be advised to hire a yacht from a boatyard where they come with a motor. Also agree with sirhadley about reefing the mainsail although my last girlfriend thought the reefing points were there to dry her smalls from.
A lot to be said for learning how to sail your boat in reverse and remembering to let off the topping lift.Thank god we are not all filmed during our cock ups.
For a start that mainsail should have been reefed in that wind, but that wouldn’t have stopped this happening. She was never going to turn downstream with boom way out to the starboard with the wind where it was. Should have either forced a jibe, or turned upriver to take a tack, then run down with the boom on the port side. And as for no buoyancy aids? Complete muppets! We hired a Hunters boat a few years back.......life jackets on all the time! (But we didn’t crash or fall in!)
No idea what the helm was thinking of when they left the bank. He had plenty of room to turn and go along the river. It would probably have been better if the guy in green was on the helm as he was the one who seemed to be giving all the instructions, so perhaps he was the sailor and the other guy was his inexperienced friend. Completely unnecessary incident. Also helm was way too far over so he stalled the rudder.
Nice teamwork!

Great video Davy, good to meet you again. 😀
Has he dried out yet?

did that yacht cause that dent in 254R as I could not see it there before the collision
when was this filmed
Never attempted to manoeuvre the boat in anyway before he crashed into the boat

Two things missing, buoyancy aid and common sense 🙄
Bouyancy aids!!!
