Put First Things First in 2023 (Mark

  • C.S Lewis once said, “Put first things first and second things are thrown in. Put second things first and you lose both first and second things.” What is the thing that should be first in our lives? According to Jesus, it is how we answer the question of his identity. In this talk, which Sean recently preached at South Shores church, he discusses the identity of Jesus and how that should be the "first thing" in our lives.

Even though I’m ashamed and discouraged I will trust in God. Even though it’s difficult, I will continue to walk with faith not by sight. I lost my job as a social worker at Forsyth hospital because I declined the vaccine. I declined because of my pre existing health condition lupus, and heart disease. I was denied my medical/religious exemption. I want to go back to the hospital but the mandate is still in place for hospitals that participate in Medicare and Medicaid all employees must have covid 19 vaccine. I get harassed constantly and mocked for sharing my testimony and for asking for prayers but prayers are all I want and I also want to bring awareness of how vaccine mandates are ruining many ppls lives. I’m now waitressing and I’m so thankful but not making nearly enough to get by. My husband passed away three years ago. I’m all alone. I’m a single mother. Both of my sons are autistic, they require a lot from me because they are non verbal. Every month is a struggle, to not end up on the streets. I’m tired of struggling putting food on the table it’s so discouraging. But even as I’m put down and mocked because of situation. I still have faith that our Heavenly Father will provide he has THIS FAR! Faith over fear. Please pray for me and my boys! God bless! 🥰

I learned that reading the Bible gives the Holy Spirit something to work with. He can only bring to mind what we have placed in our mind. If we focus on Jesus and His Word on a daily basis, we begin storing things up that the Spirit can bring to our remembrance, even if it's a verse we haven't sat down and memorized, because it's still there. But we can't just read the Bible when we feel like it, and we can't just read it. We need to study it and meditate on what God is saying to us. Thank you Sean.

This is terrible reasoning. The passages in Mark are nothing at all to do with the divinity of Jesus. The ‘Lord’ in Isaiah is Yahweh, as is the ‘κυριος’ of the LXX. Healings do not indicate divinity in the Bible. This is all just theologically forced exegesis.

@@davethebrahman9870 You say that these are just stories, so why were you previously concerned about Sean's exegesis? It shouldn't matter then. You don't believe the Bible, because the Bible talks about the virgin birth. Also, because I am going by the Bible, it also says that the Child was conceived by the Holy Spirit of God passing over Mary. If that doesn't speak to the child being divine, than I don't know what does.

Sean McDowell, that was amazing. Quick question though. I’ve been in ministry for a decade now, (and actually got to sit in on one of your lectures at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary when I was 19!) and I have a struggle between knowledge and relationship. I’m very dyslexic and have never enjoyed study, but apologetics is so interesting that I can study for hours! But I find myself having to go back and forth between spending time in scripture for knowledge, and then spending time in scripture for relationship. I see many people stick to one side or the other on that pendulum. I believe to be completely to one side is useless. the fully relationship side for others mainly being “I don’t really read my Bible or go to church because my relationship with God is my relationship.” And the polar opposite being a legalistic Bible thumper. I think I do decent at staying close to the middle, but at times it seems like I can’t do both at once. The knowledge side pushes me into the relationship side often, but I’m shooting for all the time. Any advice? What works for you?

By design Christians are the guy playing his music too loud. The call to proselytize and the certainty with which they go though life makes it necessary. And as for those who have left the faith and experienced joy (and most of these, like Sean, would have said they’d be sad to lost faith before they became faithless), it is common with any kind of perspective shift to experience elation- even with trivial things like new hobbies, social groups, a girlfriend, new music this is true. Christians are just so damned hung up on being right and needing everyone else to join their cause. Just embrace diversity, let people be people and enjoy one and love one another.
