Episode 3 was kept in the BBC Archives as it was the first episode to be made in 625 line video tape. It was also meant to be a brief respite from the monster-heavy stories of this era.
"Central European zone" they may have got the name wrong but given this episode is supposed take place decades in the future you could argue that they predicted the European Union/EU which of course did not exist when this episode first aired
This story was considered the black sheep of the season, cus there were no monsters and it was so different to any other story in the troughton era, and mainly cus only episode 3 existed, and its easily the slowest and most boring episode of the story. But when it was discovered along with the web of fear, fans realised actually how awesome it was now they could actually see it
Don't be put off by episode 3 - the story had a bad reputation when that was all we had - and it's a really strange episode - which totally changed once the whole story was found. The director of the story and future producer of the show Barry Letts was really quite desparaging about the story when it was missing - sadly we lost him in 2009 before the recovery - one of the major problems they had to overcome was the hiring of the helecopter which cost a big proportion of the budget.
This is a good story. I remember when this was found. Love seeing Troughton playing both roles. I’m also liking classic who more than the current nuWho (newest Who?) Joy to the World was one of the more enjoyable episodes of this era. But it’s still not seeming like Who to me. If I recall correctly you started watching Who when Ncuti was cast. But you are not wild about his era? I’m quite disappointed in the RTD2 era.
Yeah, when I heard Ncuti was cast that pushed me to watch DW. I really liked him in the show sex education and unfortunately at the moment he is my least favourite doctor. Not bad, just prefer every other doctor I’ve met so far :)
I saw someone mention on reddit that "an interview with RTD where he said he could no longer tell "base under siege" style stories like Doctor Who had been telling for the past 60 years... So he was switching to a more fantastical style of writing. This is why there are more musical numbers, random snowfall with no explanation, winking at the camera, deus ex machina to go alongside deus ex everything, ETC - and less big bad monster of the week." so i think with that plus shorter 8 episode season which 2 were doctor lite means Shorter storylines. Less characterization and common view i see is that it feels childish.
@@markusneedle9368who should always be geared at children but shouldn’t be childish. Kids watched this second Doctor episode and loved it. At any rate I’m not feeling Ncuti as the doctor, it’s like he’s another character, like Disney or someone wanted to change and update the Doctor in ways that make him see a bit out of character. Again Joy isn’t bad. I enjoyed it.
@@markusneedle9368 I think RTD has gotten really cowardly to be honest and because of his odd choices on what he's doing to the show is why the ratings are getting low possibly cancelled soon if he doesn't start lifting his game up or better yet bring in a brand new entire production staff.
@@CrankyGrandmaI think the same principle was espoused by Eric Thompson (Emma's dad) when he rewrote the cult Magic Roundabout scripts from the original french - he said he never wrote down for children but respected their intelligence - I feel that RTD2 is writing down, while Chibnall was writing Who as it was in the 80's (when they had NO budget) which just won't work now. (On second viewing Joy to the world is just about ok, but one of Moffat's weakest efforts)
I don’t blame you for not being interested in modern Who anymore. I tried to stay interested at several points since Capaldi left but I’ve just been disappointed each time. I’m going to be honest, for me in my headcanon, the show ended at Twice Upon a Time, it’s just such a conclusive highpoint for the show to end on and nearly everything since has been disappointing.
I rewatched twice upon a time on Christmas and even though I don’t dislike the era that comes after, I do sort of see Twice Upon a time as an end for Doctor Who and story of the Doctor.
This story was completely missing besides episode 3 up until 2013, where it was found in its entirety in a tv station in nigeria.
Glad they found it :)

Patrick Troughton is such an incredible actor.
I watched this again the other day and I absolutely loved it
Happy new year!

Yes classic who for the win

In first doctor story The Massacre William Hartnell also played the Abbot the Steven Taylor episode after dalek master plan
Your not missing much with "Joy To The World" this and seeing you react to Classic Who is way more fun.
Still a fun Christmas special.

I had a feeling the helicopter would take up a big part of the budget

This is a great story; it might "drag" slightly in the middle, but the end is worth it.
