    I love the „time must be observed“ thing it is so easy to understand and so terrifying should the party lose their method of observation.

    In my homebrew world, the fey is devoid of the flow of time: time is only relative to those who enter or exit the realm when the initial portal was opened. A portal opened yesterday into the feywild would always open up into yesterday, no matter how long you’ve been on the other side. The only way to get to a portal that opened in the future is to find a portal that was opened after whatever portal you initially came through.

    I prefer two split my courts in two. So that the Unseelie has clubs and spades as emblems, and their function focusing on elaborate almost gothic structures with a view pointed towards magical labour while Seelie have Hearts and Diamonds, focusing on decadence, and self expression. While they have opposing factors you can get corner cases where the two courts cooperate in projects.

    • @TalesArcane
      @TalesArcane  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I love that! I've seen some people dividing them into seasons as well - Spring Court and Summer Court (Seelie) and Autumn Court and Winter Court (Unseelie). Love the Alice and Wonderland thing you bring in with the playing card references.

BTW- I recommend Tales of the Old Margreve by Kobold Press if you want some amazing dark fairy tale adventures to run. They don't take place in Fairyland or the Feywild per se, but adjacent to it in a magical sentient forest.

      I'm glad you like it! It's a fun system I think, gives the players a fair shot at keeping time on their side, but introduces some new stakes if it goes missing. It also means that, it they forget to track time and things get weird, it's not my fault 😅

    One notion I quite like for managing time in a feywild encounter\arc would be to have the players demeanor set the pace of times passage - if the players move with urgency, time in the real world moves more slowly, if they a lax time in the Fae slows down and the Real accelerates by - I probably wouldn't state that outright, but drop several hints early on for that "Oh..." moment when they are gone for a long weekend in the Fae and come back and 20 years has passed.

    • @TalesArcane
      @TalesArcane  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really like the idea of players getting distracted or moving at a more relaxed pace causing time to move faster elsewhere - you get lured off the road by a group of merry wine-drinking satyrs, and suddenly time is slipping away.

      LOVE the Kingkiller books, all...two of them! Or three, I guess, including the the novella. And yes, that's where I got the idea! I've been building out the courts and building out the Exandrian feywild with the Seelie, Summer, and Unseelie courts being their own regions as expected (spring, summer, and winter respectively), but Im also building out an eladrin region (autumn) with a court of their own and a source of lore for changelings to mirror them. Eladrin were said to be influenced by the feywild and it affected them in a way where they are colorful and can change visually. there were major catastrophic events in the Material plane during the Calamity, scars on Exandria where deserts were made among other things. Since the Fey is a mirror, i thought those scars would make the feywild become essentially featureless.
    The Neverlands colors are muted if they're there at all, instead of being fluid the nature might be more brittle than expected, and an elf who is born in one of those regions or one who lives there long enough has a chance to have offspring who is a changeling (much like tieflings being decendents of a parent who made a deal. that sort of thing)
    because of their potential and seen as being moldable, they are sought after and higher powers across the realm hope to find changelings so they can be raised into that specific court's motivations and needs.

    Thanks for this! I have my party stuck on an Island with a bunch of wacky things going on, just for a side trip that I thought was funny, and for something different. But, between sessions a player asked me directly if they were in the Fey, and until they said that, I hadn't planned it that way. But I think I will have a Fey tell them in this place the planes are 'soft' - so, a place of overlap between The Fey and Prime - and to get back home, now I think I want them do it through the actual Feywild, so I found this by looking for resources to help me do that. I really appreciate the info here, and those comics are en route. Big help, friend - you got a new fan.
