In an interview, Josh described his motivation for writing this song: “I came up with the lyrical concept right after attending the Grammys for co-writing Call Me Maybe. I felt a ton of internal and external pressure to come up with something as big. I felt like the industry was pushing for everyone to be these clean-cut pop types with no edge. I knew I would never be able to be that, so I decided to write something that went the exact opposite way. I open the song talking about getting arrested for drugs in high school and go from there, embracing all of my downfalls and in fact celebrating them. Besides, all those downfalls led me to exactly where I am today. No one can live up to the perfect clean pop image, nor should they have to.”
Well apparently people are missing the point of this song as well. From my POV, this is a stab at record companies. Josh is actually singing about how crap music is now, and how the fans and his record company were pressuring him to write more. Another sarcastic brilliance. Good work, MT.
Carly came to him for help on a song that she wrote, josh saw the line "hey I just met you, and this is crazy, but here's my number so call me maybe" and scrapped the rest of the song and rewrote it with that as the chorus. So she wrote the catchy line but he made the suggestion to focus on it and then wrote the sonf
On the topic for lyrics, they actually messed it up. they say down and outs in the video, but the actual lyrics are down and ups. Random to reply to this 5 years later but it's cool
I really like that they're toying around with new music styles. It's new and refreshing. And one the many reasons they're my favorite band, I feel like they can rock any type of music genre they put their minds too. Idk, I just love Marianas Trench so much.
I love old Marianas Trench. I love new Marianas Trench. I just love Marianas Trench. When I first listened to this it actually made me cry, not because it's extremely deep and sentimental, but because it's upbeat and makes me happy. I've always been bullied, always been a loser, always been a zero. This song reminds me that people like us can still be happy and just dance around to fun music. Thank you, MT! I love you!
I can see a theme forming... Love it though!! I memorized the lyrics before it even officially came out by listening to the acoustic version I found on TH-cam, lol. If his starts playing on the radio... I'm sorry for the hearing damage I may cause to anyone around me.
me too! I woke up at three in the morning cuz my phone buzzed and I'm like wtf? and the I saw the video and I was HOLY SHIT SAVE ME NOW. I sleep next to my cousin... ran into my room like a mad women... she got the notification too...
ah my sister causes hearing damage to my nabers when she sings once they came to my door asking if everything was okay cus it sounded like some one was dyeing and im like "sorry my sister is singing her dumb contory music and she sounds like a dyeing cow! is it bugging u?!"
I agree that it doesn't have the sound i'm used to from this band, but unlike a lot of 'generic' songs I find the lyrics to be clever not just catchy. I think that's one of the things I like most about this band.
I actually think this is wonderful. it's very two sided; older fans can appreciate the references to the origin of their past sound (I.e. Josh's struggles this the heavier grunge sound of fix me), and newer fans can have some upbeat music that's funny and great to dance to. I'm happy that MT is exploring new sounds, and though some will always argue that they've "sold out", at least they are doing it in a satirical fashion that gives a big middle finger to the music industry. They've infiltrated the structure, guys. Get ready \m/
He repeats ''You're dead wrong" several times meaning that now everyone is complaining about new music but not all new music is crap because when newer music comes, then the new music now will be missed. I'm just saying new is different and not always worse than the old stuff. Y'all sound like really old people who don't like different music and want to stay ''true'' at the oldies
@@Raven5927 bestie i didn’t listen to them during high school but i’m fucking back (this is my original comment) and still crushing on josh!!! i’m literally still obsessing over them and cannot wait to see them in concert one of these days. you’re right it never goes away😭😭😭 my pfp is literally josh
There's nothing more disappointing to a band than seeing every fan saying "I miss their old stuff" because they're just trying to grow, like the rest of us. And yeah, this song is poppy and not punk but I think the point is that if this becomes a hit then you'll have everyone singing "Where'd the good go? This is where you're dead wrong" and, in my opinion, that's a reference to music nowadays. So a catchy tune where the Top 40 listeners are asking where the good music is? Ironic genius. Anyway, don't get disappointed before you hear the whole album. The first singles rarely ever represent an entire album because the hidden gems are just that: hidden. Have faith and enjoy some good dancing music in the meantime :)
It destroys my brain that people don't realize their songs like this and pop 101 are satirical. It's the point. It's a stab at the way the music industry treats those who create music. It's ironic, because these are the songs that make it on the radio. It's truly genius.
It makes me really proud of the Trenchers to look in the comments and see the ones saying they aren't to fond of the song still be positive and not like "OMG THIS IS DIFFERENT AND IT SUCKS!!!!111!!! GO BACK TO THE REAL MT!!!11!!!!" I love you guys.
Wow, this song is so great. This is the only pop music I can really enjoy. Despite their changes in genre over the years, Marianas Trench have always been and still are amazing. 💕
I love the fact he talks about serious things but puts it into a catchy tune (the beginning lyrics) and also puts funny things in it. There's not a song I don't like my MT. New or old, they're amazing
I get that everyone's talking about the sound and I get that people don't like change (Dont deny it, everyone gets like that lol) but my favourite thing about marianas trench has been their lyrics (especially lately). Maybe just watch without audio and read the lyrics. That's the main reason I like this song and so many of their other songs
I hope the rest pf the songs wont be pop parodies like pop 101 an this.. Super catchy and the lyrics are awesome as usual but like.. Been then done that..?
I am a new fan here, and I honestly have listened to their past albums for weeks. If you haven't noticed their transition, refer to Ever After. Their style of music is portraying in the album. Aside from that, I have loved them a lot more, and I also love how they're hitting society with their lyrics. :)
To those who seemed to missed the point, both Pop 101 and this song (probably the whole album too) points out to Marianas Trench breaking up. They are REQUIRED to churn out these type of music as per their contract. I actually enjoyed Pop 101, this song more direct and less subtle. Sad that they are breaking up, but looking forward for Josh's solo works in the future.
I keep listening to it over and over and hoping to hear the sparkle the guys have always had! I really can't hear it in this new song and its such a shame, such a lot of potential with this song and I don't think they have maximised the effect this song could have. so much more could have been done to create a less generic sound. I still love them very much I just hope they haven't catered to the radio so much that they lose what makes their music so special!
I was singin this at 2 in the morning, later at school, my sister was like "uh... why were you singing at 2 in the morning?"...... oops. I LOVE THIS SONG.
Hmm. I will admit I laughed and enjoyed "Pop 101" when it was released. I can appreciate a good satire. I was really excited for "Here's to the Zeros" because I guess I figured it'd be "more like the Marianas Trench I'm used to" - but I have the same feelings: I'm not initially impressed. It's good, but...generic. However, give me two or three more listens and I'll know all the words and be dancing while singing along. I'm totally cool with bands changing up their sound! But I also just miss that Marianas T sparkle, y'know? Excited for the album nonetheless!
Y'know, I feel like these pre-released songs are often like that. Generic-sounding. These songs aim to sell, and if you don''t have a few of these, you don't make money. But isn't that what this song AND Pop 101 were talking about? You can tell he's frustrated with it too. Remember the sample they released back in, what, May? That sounded a lot like Masterpiece Theatre/Ever After type harmonies. I think the less popular songs on the new album will probably be more complex like their old stuff, but maybe have a more upbeat sound like these? We'll see, and as you said, it's cool that bands change and if this is what they wanna do now, I'm sure they'll gain as many fans as they might lose. I'll enjoy it all nonetheless.
Actually, if it wasn't for Pop 101 I'd be the only one in my city to know who they were. We just got Pop 101 on the radio YESTERDAY. Stupid Tennessee Country Towns.... So the pop focus is kinda good.
I love this song so much! I do kinda miss the old Marianas trench songs but I love the two they've released. Marianas Trench is my favourite band by far... I haven't heard a song by them I don't like even the tiniest bit .
i loved this way more acoustic, but can't wait for the new album to come out!! Excited for the video as well.. Hoping it will be just as good as all the other videos they do! Love MT, Josh is so inspiring LOVE HIM!!
To everyone complaining about their new style - I love it, just shows how flexible they can be! They rock at their sad, slow songs, their emo/punk/rock, and their new pop songs. Keep it up MT!
I hate that people expect them to write the same type of music over and over again. I think Josh made it pretty clear that he's not gonna do that. Every album they released it's different and I enjoy all of them the same way. Go guys! You're doing an awesome job.
Marianas Trench is life to me. .. but this is so different from their old stuff. I'm not one for change but I love them enough to give it time. Maybe I'll warm up to this. I think it's just that all their other songs were so deep and personal and so very relatable and this....well this is just catchy and that's it for me.
Can already hear the links with this and the last song. Such a great writer to be able to create an album that transitions between each song on the album.
So I just heard of Marianas Trench this year. The first song I heard was All to Myself when me and my friend where deciding what song to sing for our talent show. Since then I've fallen in love with this music and my best friend and I's song is All to Myself. ^.^ i can't say I'm disappointed.
If they want to make money, they have to make this kind of music. This isn't selling out, this is surviving. It's a style of music, it baffles me that people are so offended by stylistic change. They're not a huge band, they rely on the radio to grow further. If they just keep singing shaketramp it's not going to happen. I've been to multiple of their concerts where they are touring whatever album is new at the time and the majority of the music they sing is from Ever After or before. They like their old music too. That music will always exist, it really isn't a big deal.
I love MT!!! I liked them back when they first started and while they've changed their style a bit I still can't help but love them and their last two satire songs have cracked me up!! I can't wait to hear the rest of the album!!
congrats boys!! can't wait to hear what's next - please don't make me wait too too long for the album to come out... don't know how much time I have left. love you guys... love the tunes. love what I'm hearing from you guys... always topping the last one - and having fun on this one too. so how ARE you going to top 'call me maybe'? ;)

I have a feeling this entire album will be satirical.
L0chPlays I hope not, it's been a while since they've released an album, and if this one is completely satire that will be a little disappointing.
MrsHarryPotter0308 Welp this is what happens when you rush a band - shrug -
L0chPlays is it really rushed though? Ever After was released in 2011 :P
If you have writers block and are rushed into writing something, it'll turn out pretty crap.
Damn Ramsay*. I laughed when "top Call Me Maybe" it was a joke, he co-wrote it! Merry Christmas!
According to him he wrote the entire thing. I don't know that's what he told my mom XD
Carly came to him for help on a song that she wrote, josh saw the line "hey I just met you, and this is crazy, but here's my number so call me maybe" and scrapped the rest of the song and rewrote it with that as the chorus. I think it's going to be a more pop theme. LIke they're going to make it mainly like the pop these days and how they're all so similar..
***** Well both songs are mocking the pop music industry. Typical Josh sass but with a nice melody.

It's because of the pre-chorus, the melody is similar, though I like how MT implements so many harmonies in it
I was thinking the same thing!! I was like this sounds like one of Pink's songs xD
YES. It sounds like Call Me Maybe also. He's tryinhg to make a ssong as good as Call Me Maybe again.
I agree. Favourite band but I do miss their old tunes

I don't know what it is about this song in particular but it just gives me the good vibes in my soul
Question: What the fuck is Mike gonna do when they play this live
Um... dance awkwardly?
He can sit awkwardly like Ian does when they do acoustic lololol
I heard it live when they played it for the first time ever. It sounds a bit different live. Obviously.
Play the fucking guitar... songs are played slightly different live...
Cowbell?
Their lyrics are so clever and honest haha can't get enough of their music!! :D
My Christmas is sucking so far so this was really nice to wake up to. ^^

pop 101 was a parody, but i dont think this is.
Faceless Name But like.. "They say where's the next hit baby? God, how could I top Call Me Maybe?"
josh helped write that song. its not parodying it really
the whole point of the song is to make fun of pop/dance stuff and how people are forced to change their sound to fit it, listen to the lyrics...
