- IT’S OFFICIAL! On November 2, 2023, Cedar Fair and Six Flags announced that the two amusement park chains will be unified through an $8 billion merger of equals transaction to create one theme park superpower that will operate 27 amusement parks, 15 water parks and nine resort properties across North America. However, many coaster enthusiasts and theme park fans are wondering what exactly this deal will entail. How will this merger affect the parks going forward? What changes can we expect? In today’s episode of Theme Park Parlay, I’m going to discuss everything we know about the merger so far. I’ll also share my own thoughts and opinions about it, and address some of the concerns that the community may have. It’s certainly a monumental moment in amusement park history, but also an exciting time with limitless possibilities.

Thank you for recognizing that parks are run by local management, not necessarily by corporate. As someone who has worked at SFGAdv and Dorney, I never understood the notion that Six Flags operations were subpar. The Dorney employees were professional and the SFGAdv were more focused on efficiency, friendliness and being a little more energetic and entertaining. Most enthusiasts rate an entire chain by the baby Flags, usually SFA, Great Escape and Darien Lake. They rank CF based on CP, KI and KBF. I didn’t have an issue with operations at SFMM, SFGAM or SFStL.
So true! I got to visit a few Six Flags parks this summer and was pleasantly surprised by most of them. It really does depend on the park.

I think it’s a good thing for both Cedar Fair & Six Flags because the combined funds could help improve all these parks and give a better guest experience. And if they combine the season passes into one, that’s an even better value for those who live near or visit both Six Flags and Cedar Fair parks. And I agree that the downside could mean higher prices for the parks and possibly selling off smaller ones too. Thanks Parker for the informative video!
I’m very intrigued to see what they do with their season pass system, but you’re right, for people who love near both Six Flags and Cedar Fair parks and people like me who travel to both, I imagine it would make things easier. Thanks for watching!
My hope for the merger is that leadership (from Cedar Fair) will find a way to divest itself from Six Flags Qiddiya, since the park will be located in a country that disrespects women and individuals who identify as LGBTQ+;
It doesn’t matter if they have the tallest, fastest, longest roller coasters and high quality attractions if more than half of the population cannot visit the park.
And another thought: in the US, caps are not allowed on coasters. Women won’t be able to ride because they can’t remove their hijabs, along with men who are required to wear head wear.
I have a Six Flags Legacy Membership (Diamond Elite VIP) and would hate to give up my benefits. The uncertainty about my membership is the only thing I don’t like about the merger. I'd rather have two companies.
One way I’m trying to stay positive about this is that Warner bros (the company that owns dc and looney tunes) is also the owner of Hanna Barbera. This brings me some hope that Hanna Barbera could return to some parks like Kings Island and Canada’s Wonderland. 👀

That was really interesting. You did a great job breaking everything down and what might be/could be. The IP use can be quite interesting. Rebrand Power Tower to something with Bugs Bunny. One of the responses mentioned bringing the HB characters back. There was a HB land at Kings Island I believe with Flintstones & Baba Booey based rides.
Yesss! Pretty much all the old Paramount parks had Hanna-Barbera, so it would be cool to see that make a return. Now, although the chain owns the IPs, I know there’s still a bit of bureaucracy that needs to be navigated before bringing them to each individual park. But I’m sure something like Hanna Barbera could be negotiated without too much trouble - so long as there’s nothing from Universal’s dealings with Warner Bros. that would prevent it.

Basically that is what everybody is saying it's the loss of money during those years back between the pandemic and gaining back the money they lost so working together they both can regain the money they both lost in different regions you are all saying the same things so which is make sense just using the Six Flags image with seems to by using the six-part theme and not changing the name of the park itself doesn't mean that we're going to lose Cedar Point's name or any other name like Kings Island from the seat of Affairs Corporation it just means they're just going to say they're under the works of Six Flags Cedar Point but overall is about money

Why would competitors merge? Short term stability at first, but in the end Cedar's Fair is going to eat Six Flags up, and I bet the SF name dies within the next decade. I grew up visiting Great Escape and currently live local to Six Flags New England; the latter park has seen better days and is truly in need of some upgrades.
Well both companies offer very similar products and experiences, and are more similar to each other than the other theme park chains. The merge would also give them a bit more stability to survive tough times (weather, poor economy, etc) because they’re portfolio is more geographically balanced and they can share resources and cash. Given the way tourism has been going lately, it does make sense. And although Cedar Fair has a bit more seniority, they are intending to use the Six Flags name as the company name. There’s just too much branding power and recognition to lose it.
I actually visited both of those parks this summer! Great Escape was awesome, and I liked New England but they’re operations definitely need a bit of work. Hoping the merge gives them a way to improve.
Well said and honestly helps me feel better about this news. I’m still not thrilled, but I’m definitely feeling the same; probably not any drastic changes to the character of each park. Interesting to hear about how different Great Escape is and honestly hadn’t even considered some SF parks might drop the “Six Flags” from their name. I’m not worried about “Six Flags Over Canada/Wonderland,” but really just hoping they don’t add a La Ronde style “A Six Flags Park” sign on Front Gate.

My home park is Six Flags Darien Lake, my concern is that Six flags doesn't own this park or Frontier City and only manages/operates them (EPR Properties is currently the owner of those park). I'm wondering what is the future for these parks? Also, do you think California Great America could be saved?
Hmmm good point. I’m assuming the rights to operate the parks will just be transferred to the new company along with everything else, unless EPR themselves object to it. That said, if the chain were to get rid of some parks, they would be easy ones to get rid of. That said, I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. Some of the best years I’ve seen from Darien Lake were when it was operating as an independent park.
As for CGA, it’s hard to say. I imagine any plans that are already in motion will be carried out, especially since they’ll now have Six Flags Discovery Kingdom to serve the same region. On the other hand, they could extend their ownership of the park and continue to operate it lease the land from the city.
It’ll be very interesting to see how the new company handles those parks.

The company will retain all IPs that they had before, but I'm not sure if we'll see any mixing within the parks. It's definitely a possibility, but I can't imagine we'd see too much crossover.

I'm not happy about any of this. I hate Six Flags. I've had nothing but terrible experiences at their parks. Six Fkags is dirty, ghetto, terrible operations, ghetto guests. It was said on the conference call that Six Fkags parks would take priority over Cedar Fair parks, that's a big red flag for me. I also don't want to see the Six Flags name plastered all over my Cedar Fair parks. Cedar Fair parks will also not receive the investments they once got. Employees will be let go and yes, parks will be sold or closed to pay down all this terrible debt that they are taking on.I definitely don't want to see gay Bugs Bunny and Batman walking around my Cedar Fair park.
Which Six Flags parks have you been to? And how long ago? I’ve definitely had my sub-par experiences at some Six Flags park, but I’ve had some really great ones as well! And remember that the Cedar Fair team seems to be retaining a little more seniority here. They’ll be able to take their experience and expertise to improve the areas where Six Flags may be lacking - which is great for everyone!
Employees being let go will be a problem though. I didn’t talk about it in the video, but I there’s going to be a lot of reshuffling and layoffs through all of this, and that will be very upsetting.
