    I’ve always looked at a practice pad as something to warm up on for 30 minutes before hopping in the kit or before a gig. I also use a pad at home if I’m going to watch a movie or something like that. I don’t get really serious about what I work out on it. I pretty much just run through series of singles, doubles, paradiddles. That’s it. I use it as more of tool to keep my hands feeling good. Can’t always get up to the lockout everyday. I also will throw a record on and improvise some musical ideas on the pad at home occasionally. It keeps me feeling connected to a pad musically instead of looking it as this cold, sterile mechanism reserved for only robotic stick control practice regiments.

    My guy, you have no idea how happy you made me just by MENTIONING Keith Moon. He was my inspiration to take drumming from a fun after school activity to exactly what you said at the beginning: a cathartic and deeply emotional experience. The Who's music changed me forever. Though I no longer play like a Keith Moon impersonator, I still find a deep love for his drumming, though I can clearly see its flaws when they appear. Also, it was awesome to see even just a clip of Zak Starkey playing with The Who. The groove of his Dad (Ringo), and the imagination of his godfather (Moon) made for one badass rock drummer, that's for sure. Cheers, Nate :)

    In the end it really just all boils down to how passionate you are. When a strong passion is there I don't think it really matters how you learn. You'll find your way, because you really want it. Everybody learns differently and the only constant trait all the legends share is that they LOVE this thing more than anything else. I'm sure you could find 2 legendary drummers out there where Drummer A practiced on a pad while Drummer B did not.

  • @jonashellborg8320
    @jonashellborg8320 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I only play a practise pad because it’s quiet. I prefer a snare drum or toms, but for longer sessions at 90-115 dB, I need ear plugs.
    I play drums, and I also sing. And there, I love all the ads for “do this and sing twice as high!”, “the secret to head voice”. No, it’s about many many hours of practise, gradually learning what to tense, what to relax, what shape things should be in, and repeat until it’s natural. I do like this channels 80/20 principe push, and that you can research into what really really matters and focus on that, over trying 5 brands of drum sticks to see which ones lets you play faster. :-)

    • @jmfs3497
      @jmfs3497 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same on the desire for lower volume practices. I outfitted myself with low volume cymbals and a kick pad, too. I wanted to practice every day without feeling the tension of trying to "play quiet" out of respect for roommates/neighbors. I play my acoustic kit one or two days a week for recording or band rehearsals, and I tune and warm up on those drums for about 30 minutes before the session is scheduled. Like you said, it's not the magical brands of gear, it's really how you interface with the instrument in front of you.

    As a new drummer in my late 30s I knew going in that I needed to enjoy practicing or I wouldn't keep playing. I don't know why a drum teacher teaching kids would ever recommend using only a practice pad.
    I don't know if I'll ever get a gig but I don't really care. Each person needs to decide what they want to get from drumming, and then find the teacher or program or gigs that speaks to them and their goals.
    If I had started playing as a kid I would have definitely had some of these things going around in my brain. Now I realize that you just need to measure yourself against yourself and decide if it's worth the effort to get better. I totally agree that some people incorrectly focus on things like burying the beater rather than working on timing or cleanliness. Who cares what the kick sounds like if it's in the wrong spot?

    I always liked what Achilles, played by Brad Pitt, said to his cousin at the beginning of Troy, whey he was training his cousin on sword work. The cousin did something that Achilles pointed out as wrong, and the cousin pointed out that he's seen Achilles do the same thing in a fight. Achilles said, "once you've mastered what I'm teaching you, you can do what you want. I agree somewhat with an old timey formulaic approach to teaching beginners, but it's also important to teach making your instrument sound right for the song or music. Sometimes the wrong technique can sound just right! Some of the best players have unconventional techniques; a lot of the time because they taught themselves
    To the pad chops guy: don’t you also need cymbal chops and loosely tuned Tom chops. Oh, and then there’s your feet, better start choppin up your feet

    • @jonathanedwards8696

    All the convos about rules mostly stem from areas of inexperience in pursuit of a magical kung-fu battle grip that will unlock the secret to success. Lessons/coaching/mentoring help me find my way through some common obstacles, and the main lessons are learning to not injure yourself doing something you love. Most gigging is about being an available and enjoyable presence in whatever community you find yourself in, and just expanding on those experiences.

    You should take lessons if drums, or any instrument, is your first instrument. After playing piano, trumpet, french horn, and guitar I started on drums. My family said drums were too loud, and I should play guitar. But 2 years after guitar lessons I still sucked. So then at 16, I worked and bought my first drum set and became self taught. One problem with taking lessons, is your instructor will do 2 things: 1) Teach you to play like they do, 2) put constraints up and limit what you can play. Telling you, "you can't play that", even though you just did. So get a good, open minded drum instructor. Even though I'm self taught, it didn't matter so much knowing already how to read music, plus I still practiced my rudiments etc (just not on a practice pad). It's important drummers understand music, and can read music other than drum tab. Luckily, I was a natural on drums, and definitely not on guitar. When I told my guitar teacher I was going to take a break on the guitar lessons, his response was: "Thank God". lol

Best I could do was pull up a recording of Like a Stone (Audioslave) then random guy on TH-cam playing the "same" beat, but completely lacking the touch and feel of that song. Can someone explain to me the lie #2? I'm not a English native speaker and just couldn't understand what the "stick slicing" actually is. Is that about hitting the surface from different direction than straight vertical hit?

      Yeah it’s about ur sticking coming down at the head at an angle, as apposed to like the stick going straight up and down off the head.

      I'm a native speaker, and I've played drums 27 years and it took me a minute to figure out this too, I think it means as you do rolls around the kit, instead of an up and down wrist motion on each tom, you go at it sideways, think slicing through air with a lightsaber, maybe? That is my best guess from his example, and I am totally guilty of this!

    Sponsorship is a business. Some of the best drummers are not sponsored or change sponsors for reasons of which gear they like or ease of touring. Jonathan Moffett is sponsored but usually doesn't do cymbal Sponsorship because he likes to play a mix. Some companies demand exclusivity as part of the Sponsorship with some allowances to hardware such as pedal or throne.

    There is an annual contest, sponsored by leading companies , for girls in different, called HIT LIKE A GIRL.
    Usually it runs in mid-april. Contestants shall send a video in any quality that is available to them. It can be on the school set in the gym, but there are rich parents try to improve their daughters chances by buying an upper league kit and K cymbals, even hiring a camera pro and setting up a studio with expensive mics.
    To no avail!!! p.s. you may use a playback track. The jury is top notch and willing to advance girl drumming.

    The drum set is not a flat drum, so slicing doesn't matter. You're going to have to slice to play certain parts of your kit depending on how its setup.
    If you were playing a marching snare drum with like seven other guys and gals, yeah you're probably going to get harped on for slicing, because it's going to create inconsistencies between you and the other six people playing exact same thing.
    But on drumset it doesn't matter. You literally have to slice sometimes when playing drum set. Your grip isn't going to stay the same the whole time like a flat drum, because your drum set is not completely flat.
    So many variables that apply to the practice pad or marching percussion just does not apply to drum set.
    I think a lot of people don't realize the distinction between the two, and apply Knowledge from one to the other haphazardly.

    Internet drummers are def legit, however, to me, it seems like internet drummers are mainly known for their ability to solo or play very obtuse music that almost seems like it's written as a platform to solo over, whereas drummers who are known from bands have a more even split between showing off their technical prowess and proving that they can make even the most basic of beats sound incredibly musical at the same time. I don't think you'd see many internet drummers trying to show off a really locked in groove.

    • @8020drummer
      @8020drummer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think that's actually a false narrative adopted by drummers who aren't as good as those internet drummers but who have gigs. (Besides you can find footage of every one of the internet hotdoggers playing backbeat with a real band)

      @@8020drummer I can see that demographic making that claim. I don't really watch youtube drummers, so maybe it's not a surprise that all the little snippets that I've come across on social media have been only the juciyest fills or solos because they're 10 second videos, but still, if that's what someone who could be a potential viewer sees first, can't blame me for having that first impression before I go and see otherwise.

    Playing good gigs should improve anyones drumming.Gigs do count, unless playing by yourself is all you want to do. Learning to respond in real time can't be learned in a practice room by yourself.

      Learning to play with different musicians is always valuable. The sheer number of gigs you play isn't really relevant if none of the other musicians are very good :-)

    Drum set from day 1 is the rule. And it should be musical too, not drills. I'd recommend to start with simple phrase on a snare drum, then orchestrate it on snare and toms, Then add bass drum, and finally a bit of dynamics. This aproach demonstrates how easy and fun drums can be.
